Coal plants expensive, unpopular

Good news in the Billings Gazette this morning:

At least 16 coal-fired power plant proposals nationwide have been scrapped in recent months and more than three dozen have been delayed as utilities face increasing pressure due to concerns over global warming and rising construction costs.
The slow pace of plant construction reflects a dramatic change in fortune for a fuel source that just a few years ago was poised for a major resurgence. Combined, the canceled and delayed projects represent enough electricity to power approximately 20 million homes.

Costs and concerns for the environment are slowing coal development. Last thing our community needs - or should want - is large conglomerate-owned fossil-fuel-burning plants.

Of course, increasing energy demands haven't slowed, so the pressure still exists. Now's the the time to start talking about cheaper, sustainable sources of energy that are locally owned. The technology is there, why aren't we using it?

Fossil leaders (0.00 / 0)

The only reason we're not moving toward sustainable, renewable energy sources in Montana is because, like coal, our so-called "leaders" are fossilized dinosaurs, still living in the past and incapable of mustering the imagination and energy to move us into the future. We have the money, we have the renewable resources but when oh when will we get someone with the political courage and honesty to leave coal behind? The answer to that question is not yet in sight, unfortunately.

we are having so much fun here in GF whompin' the snot outta these fossilized leaders. And after this next city election, we WILL have new leaders willing to leave the proposed coal plant behind! This community is energized unlike anything I have ever seen before. It's wonderful.

Couldn't agree more with you on whopping up on the GF coal-burner. Plus, I love your perhaps unintentional pun that the community is "energized" -- it sure is, AGAINST bad, dirty energy.

As for my comment, I was thinking a little higher up the ladder of "leaders" - more like Schweitzer, Baucus, and Tester, all of whom signed on to and are promoting turning Great Falls into a military fuel colony using, yes, the great fossil fuel, coal. These guys need to wake up and actually lead -- which you don't do by employing the same vernacular and methods of the mid-80s (think Schwinden cutting the coal tax in half to "improve our business climate.")

Go get 'em, Larry. The energy up there is good to see.
