On Matt Singer and Forward Montana

by: Jay Stevens

Thu Oct 25, 2007 at 12:23:32 PM MST

In today's Missoula Independent appears a full feature of our very own Matt Singer written up by John Adams. It's a very fair piece and accurately, IMHO, represents Matt's "style," organizational skills, and ideology. Forward Montana 's been doing excellent work lately, and it and Matt deserve the attention.

That said, this cracked me up:

Singer has a burly, often disheveled appearance. His closely cropped beard, deep-set eyes, oval glasses, shaggy receding hair, and slack shouldered posture disguise his low-key charisma and bright political mind. He speaks in a flat, almost inflectionless voice that at times seems barely above a whisper. At first it's hard to imagine an average Joe like Singer inspiring legions of young activists.

Heh heh.

And now, let's play, "guess who it!" I'll post a quote from the piece. Your job is to guess who said it. Here's the quote:

"We're both young guys interested in politics and interested in Montana," [mystery guest #2] says of the impetus behind their meeting over beers earlier this year. "I obviously want young people to get involved in politics and paying attention and volunteering and voting. It's better for democracy and better for Montana."

If you'd have guessed Erik Iverson, the chairman of the Montana Republican party, you're a sharper knife than me! Or you're Erik Iverson. Let's hope that this feeling trickles on down to Missoula conservatives who accuse Forward Montana of all sorts of liberal outrages?

Jay,

Thanks for the post on Mr. Singer.  The article was pretty darn good.  I think the way that Matt carries himself in attempting to engage the young voters in Montana is exemplary.  The way he educates and challenges those older than himself as well as the target age group of FMT is something I admire, big time.

Adams was spot on in terms of bringing up the question of drawing the line between this blog and running Forward MT.  Matt has been very forthright in his disclosure on posts as it relates to his involvement in FMT.  I think this article further drove home that point.  Giddyup.

As much as it pains me to say it, I appreciated the tone and sentiment of Eric Iverson's comments over those of Matt McKenna.  My guess is that McKenna is still smarting a bit over the letter Matt posted shortly after Jon won the election questioning some of the folks that Jon brought on board as staff. (A letter that took stones the size of the capitol dome in Helena to write IMHO.) There are a lot of folks who won't say it out loud, who wish that someone in McKenna's home of Gallatin County would slip him a piece of humble pie next time he's home.  I believe his comments seem to underscore that a bit. Please don't get me wrong, I like McKenna, he worked his ass for Jon just like Matt, but there are always more than one way to skin a cat when it comes to technique and delivery.  Please do not interpret this as any sort of ringing endorsement for Mr. Iverson as a poster boy for humility. I just found his comments a bit more gracious, exemplified so because he is often on the other side of the issue than myself, Singer, & McKenna.

I'm sure Matt is not at all reveling in being the on the cover of the Indy or for being labeled poster boy of both the MT bloggers & young progressive voter movement in MT.  I am however damn glad he is just that. He deserves an atta boy as much as anyone I know for what he does in his everyday life.  Thank you Singer.  Thank you Forward Montana.  May the soles and tips of your boots get worn out from kicking so much ass.

Enough back slapping, now get back to work.  We've got a forking moron representing us in the House of Representatives who needs to be sent back to the goat farm.

Please don't wish Rehberg on those who farm goats. (0.00 / 0)
i think you owe goats and goat farmers everywhere an apology.

Besides that, great post.
