Sinrud needs architect's license; blames governor

by: Jay Stevens

Tue Dec 04, 2007 at 07:35:43 AM MST

Normally I wouldn't comment on this story about how a state board ordered John Sinrud to quit practicing architecture until he obtains an architecture's license - it's how he puts food on his plate, and has nothing to do with his legislative work - if it weren't for this quote:

"It was nothing but political, absolutely and completely political," Sinrud said Monday. "It's a political hit because I caused the governor some problems."

As chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, Sinrud has disagreed with Schweitzer often.

Sinrud said he and his family have been living on savings since mid-October because he can't work, "but something's going to have to fall in the next two months."

"It could force me out of Montana and the Legislature, and that's exactly what the governor wants," Sinrud said.

Sinrud denies he does architecture; instead he does "development."

The governor virulently denies the charge. "It would be delusional," Schweitzer said. "I didn't even know what he did for a living." (Shades of Scott Sales threatening to take down the legislative special session because he thought the Good Guv had scheduled it to interfere with a conference of state legislative leaders?)

I don't pretend to know the subtle differences between "development" and architecture, but there were loads of "projects" on Sinrud's website (now down) showing buildings his company designed. Sinrud also has a history of misrepresenting his credentials: for at least five years on his work website (also down) Sinrud claimed he had been elected in 2000 to his legislative seat, when in fact he had been appointed in 2002.

In short there's more "evidence" that Sinrud practiced architecture than there is that the Good Guv is filling some sort of vendetta against the House Appropriations Committee Chair.

Still, I hope John untangles his legal woes, or gets an architect's license, or finds a way out of the mess he's found his way into. It's decidedly unfun to have your livelihood threatened.

Talk about politically motivated! (0.00 / 0)
This one has political stench on it that won't quit. Don't get me wrong here, I'm no huge fan of Sinrud's (a bit of a wing-nut for my taste) but the man does have a right to earn a living and shucky-darn, what'd ya' know, he's the one who's on the hot seat. Me thinks this one stinks and the path leads right to the Governor's office (like this is a new tactic for him), I think not. If Sinrud is guilty then so is Rep. Hal Jacobsen who is a candidate for the state senate, he does the same kind of work that Sinrud does. Interesting that when push came to shove, Sen. Cooney ducked out the back door and recused himself in this case. And if you read the entire article in today's paper by Chuck Johnson he interviews Sinrud's attorney who is quoted as saying this is "selective enforcement", I hope Rep. Jacobsen is watching his backside on this one, he could be next!

I'm not bitin' (0.00 / 0)
Sinrud has a history of misrepresenting himself. A good defense lawyer should be playing the political card, knowing a lot of governor-is-evil conspiracy theorists abound. (See Montana Headlines' post on how a Schweitzer fundraising letter is actually a means of intimidation for an example of this mindset.) I have no doubt that what the governor said is true, he had no idea that Sinrud was an architect. Oops! I mean "developer."

Sales made similar claims when the special session was called. I think these guys are guilty of assuming the governor cares about that much that he'd do something like this out of spite.

But I don't know why I have to argue this point. There's no -- NONE -- evidence to back your point, while there's evidence of Sinrud doing architecture work...

Guess we'll have to wait and see what the Judge say? (0.00 / 0)
Personally I think this thing stinks and I hope it blows up in Big Brian's Pumpkin face, he's behind this thing and anyone with a lick of sense knows that, like I said, I just wonder if Hal Jacobsen is going to be held to the same standard?

Mm hmm (0.00 / 0)
I only wish the governor had this kind of control. It would be so much easier. You know even if he did have his hand in this people sound stupid all the same by saying he did. It's like saying the only reason they broke the law is they got caught. Don't be stupid, Interested. Because I know you really aren't. Sinrud has no place to go and he's totally screwed. What would a politician, particularly a Republican, do? That's right. Blame another politician. You think he should be able to unlawfully go about business? What a joke.

Did you read the article? (0.00 / 0)
I think you're a little crazy.  You see, most states require a license for things like building design, because (newsflash!) they can fall down and kill people.  That's why we have licensing.  Especially in a county near an enormous volcano.  Have you ever driven by Quake Lake?  There was no push coming to shove.  Cooney recused himself when it came in.  I hope whoever designed your house had a license.

Smells Like Karma To Me (0.00 / 0)
Though Interested has calmed somewhat in the thread above this one, I still think it appropriate and amusing to examine the Republican apologetics on display here.

but the man does have a right to earn a living

Not if he's violating statute to do so, he doesn't.  Or would you use such an argument for bookies, prostitutes and dope growers?  But I do concede this much, he does have the right to earn a living, and I'm certain he has a wonderful career awaiting him in the housekeeping or food service industries.  Perhaps a greeter at Wal-Mart?

Me thinks this one stinks and the path leads right to the Governor's office (like this is a new tactic for him)

So ... the State Board of Architects finds John Sinrud guilty of practicing without a license, and urges a criminal investigation (misdemeanor,of course).  The obvious presumption should be that they have some evidence of the fact.  BUT ... the rational reader of Interested's defense is supposed to suspend the need for evidence and simply admit that it's the Governor being a bully, based on nothing more than biased caterwaling.  That dog don't hunt, now do it?

from the thread above:  Sinrud has NEVER said he was an architect,

Apparently it's okay to act like cop as long as you NEVER say that you're a cop.  Astounding grasp of the legal intricacies you have there, Interested.  And now, my personal favorite ...

If Sinrud is guilty then so is Rep. Hal Jacobsen who is a candidate for the state senate, he does the same kind of work that Sinrud does.

If Sinrud get's burned then somebody from your side has to go down as well!!!  Uhh, no.  No in spades.

a)  Not all developers perform as architects.  There is strong reason to believe that Sinrud did.  At no point does that indict all 'developers'.
b)  Only someone grossly (and rather ham-handedly) attempting to politicize an incident would actually think that there is a threat implied by justice being dispensed equally among all transgressors.  If Jacobson is guilty and goes down (I reiterate that there is not one shred of evidence against him) then only the frightened partisan will care.  Hint:  That would be you, Interested; nobody else.
c)  The arrogant petulance implied by this accusation is actually laugh-out-loud funny.  Interested, you just accused a man of criminal activity based on nothing but your desire to defend John Sinrud; and moreover you have accepted that Sinrud may be guilty, but only if it supports your conspiracy theory against the Governor.  Doesn't that give you the slightest pause?

I've written before, and stand strongly behind the view, that Sinrud is a bully.  Bullies do not contain or limit their brash and self-serving actions to politics.  Sinrud overstepped, and now he's getting smacked down.  It is the modern Republican way to toady when the bully gets his come-uppence.  I feel no sympathy for him whatsoever, and though I am not prone to predictions (save in football) I do posit that if the ruling of the SBoA is overturned, Sinrud is gonna sue for an unjust and obscene amount of money.  'Cause that's the way that bullies are.

Personally, I love the smell of Karma in the morning.

Spot on, sir (2)! (0.00 / 0)

I'm confused (0.00 / 0)
Sinrud apparently told the Board that he does not hold himself as an "architect" and that he is not engaged in the "practice of architecture."  Yet at http://www.sinrud.com/ under "John's Story," Sinrud says that "He has enjoyed a successful career as an architectural Designer and is currently President of JJKG & Associates, Inc. an architectural design firm."  Nowhere on his website does he mention he is a developer.  Am I missing something?

I think there's a claim that architecture and architectural design are distinct (0.00 / 0)
The difference, so far, is lost on me. That's why I'm trying to get my hands on the investigative report, which I imagine would be a public record, so that we can figure this thing out.
