Richardson out?

The latest presidential campaign rumor? Bill Richardson is to drop out of the race. Not a surprise, given Richardson's results in Iowa and New Hampshire, but a sort of important event in these parts. Richardson had a lot of early support here as our "Western Democrat" candidate, his stance on Iraq, alternative energy, and guns, but he lost us.

Steven Benen attributes Richardson's demise to a supply-side economic policy and a past brush with neo-conservatism. I don't agree. Richardson was a terrible campaigner, period. He lost me the first time I saw him debate. (And there was the Red Sox - Yankees thing, of course.)

Bill Richardson simply looked unprepared and outclassed.

But Richardson's support - 5 to 10 percent - gives rise to the obvious question in this tight race: does he endorse, and who? It's not difficult to imagine Richardson parlays his run into a Cabinet position - for which he's obviously well qualified - and, given his lackluster performance, maybe that was the plan all along.

So, who does he tap?

Update: It's official:

"It is with great pride, understanding and acceptance that I am ending my campaign for president of the United States," he told supporters in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

"It's been an exhilarating and humbling year. An experience I will treasure and I will never forget."

The report says Richardson "has been mentioned as a possible vice presidential candidate or secretary of state in a Democratic administration."

Not sure if his debate skills earned him a VP slot (maybe Dodd?). Secretary of state is intriguing...

That would be wierd (0.00 / 0)
I would find it very odd that he would drop before Nevada.

And he's still New Mexico's chief exec until 2010, so it's possible that he won't vie for any cabinet post.

I'd love to hear your thoughts... (0.00 / 0)
...on Richardson's candidacy. I know you were one of the strongest supporters of Richardson around here... Write up a post!

I guess it's official now (0.00 / 0)
I remain somewhat surprised (and kinda sad).  I really figure he'd pull through Nevada.  I'll try to write a post about him.

Perhaps as important... (0.00 / 0)
Perhaps it is just as important what 'strings' he attaches to his endorsement.  His percentage points would have been higher if he had started in the West, almost certainly; moreover, in the West each vote counts more in the electoral college when it comes down to that.  He still has a real oppurtunity here to make sure that issues important in the West get heard if he makes it clear he is still fighting for this side of the country, and that his endorsement will reflect that.

Do we really matter? (0.00 / 0)
It's too bad, I like the guy (except for his Iraq plan).  It's a nice thought that the West will matter more in the primaries, and that Richardson may be the guy to help carry it . . . but if it comes down to a delegate count will we really matter?

Just on Feb 5th (Super-Tuesday just sounds . . . well, stupid) alone CA, 7 other states from the west, 9 states from the south and mid-west and 4 states from the north-east all vote.  Now math is not my strong suit, but "the west", not counting CA, has 267 delegates which is less than NY's 281, the whole North East (a total of 589) and the deep south (383).  Then there is CA (441 delegates).  I don't know much about anything, but doesn't it stand to reason that CA, is going to receive much more attention than the rest of us, and that Gov. Richardson's endorsement (while perhaps a momentum factor) won't really affect things even if he delivers "the west"?  Of course that assumes that CA and "the west" have different views on these issues . . .

I like the guy, he spoke well of issues that aren't getting much press, but except for NV - which WY may have foreshadowed NV's impact - "the west" will probably be lost in the shuffle yet again . . .

Richardson (0.00 / 0)
Richardson was a real disappoint me for me during the campaign. Heading in, he was a candidate that I thought I might support, but as you say, he never really seemed as prepared/ready as the other candidates.
