And they wonder why they're the minority party in Congress?

Things are a-brewin' in Congress today that are sure an embarrassment to the Republican party.

Okay...so a FISA bill granting retroactive immunity for telecoms was passed in the Senate and sent down to the House. Only House Democrats instead want to consider granting a 21-day extension of the "Protect America Act" instead, which was soundly beaten by both the right and left.

To protest this decision, Republican House members staged a walkout...during the middle of a memorial service for Representative Tom Lantos, who died earlier this week.

Classy.

But wait! There's more!

So, then the House votes on contempt citations for former White House aides, Josh Bolten and Harriet Miers, for refusing to testify in the Congressional investigation of the prosecutor purge. No brainer, right? Surely even Republicans would recognize that their body's power is being compromised by the White House, and that, even if they question the worthiness of the investigation, would be interested in ensuring their authority is respected in the other branches of government...right?

Guess again.

The House voted 223-32 in favor of contempt citations for chief of staff Josh Bolten and former White House counsel Harriet Miers on Thursday. They are accused of failing to cooperate in a congressional inquiry into whether the firings of at least nine federal prosecutors were politically motivated.

Minority leader John Boehner led angry Republicans on a walkout before the vote, leading to the lopsided tally.

Okay, so maybe they're dead wrong on all the measures, and so maybe they're acting like a pack of spoiled 13-year-olds, but at least they're getting exercise! Too bad Hastert's not around to enjoy the benefits...

Wrong. Not even close. (0.00 / 0)
It's understandable that you got confused today; there was a lot going on.  Maybe Singer should explain this stuff to you before you post next time.

There were two major "controversies" in the House.  During the Lantos memorial service, the Democrats had promised to stay out of session.  They didn't - so while Republicans were watching Bono perform "All you need is love," the Dems gaveled into session and tried to pass a controversial house contempt resolution.  The GOP got word of this and quickly offered a motion to adjourn which is a delay tactic so that they could finish their memorial service.  That was controversy one - that kind of set the tone for the day (notice who caused it).

Hours later, House Republicans walked out because of the House Dems failure to even allow a vote on the popular bipartisan Senate version of FISA.  While they were gone, House Dems called up the contempt resolution again and passed it.  And besides, 223 votes would have been enough to pass it even if Republicans had been around.

Black is white! Up is down!

So...wait...the Republicans didn't walk out during the service?

The walk out happened literally hours after the service was finished.

the second one did... (0.00 / 0)
...but not the first.

Funny how it took the GOP by surprise. Luckily there appeared to be a spare podium set up on the stairs of the Capitol at the time...

There was only one walk-out Jay.

During the Memorial Service one Republican left the service walked 20 feet down the hall to file a "Motion to Adjourn" which is a parliamentary tactic used to delay a vote that shouldn't have been happening.  Seriously, did you watch any news at all on Thursday?
