Free trade advocates are "nutcakes"

by: Jay Stevens

Max Baucus, in a recent speech before a pro-trade group:

He said people do want the right thing, even if they're not sure what that is on complex issues. He told business leaders at the Emergency Committee for American Trade meeting that straight talk on trade issues would lead most Americans to see its benefits.

"I'd say 70 percent of people are in that big middle. There are 15 percent right-wing that are nutcakes, and there's 15 percent left-wing and they're nutcakes ... (and) the big center. And just listen, and people do want the right thing."

I'm thrilled that Max Baucus has decided to throw his support behind reconsidering "free" trade.  After all, if you take a gander through the polls on trade, only about a quarter of the population believes free trade has helped the U.S. economy.

That is, if you're a free trade supporter, you're probably a "nutcake."

I buy that. I think most folks want to encourage trade, but want to make sure our trade agreements are fair, that they benefit American workers and businesses, not just multinational corporations looking for cheap labor and a way to trample over workers' rights and avoid environmental standards.

I think you and I read this differently (0.00 / 0)
I read his remarks to suggest that the 30% are the 15% on the right who oppose free trade (your Pat Buchanans) and the 15% on the left who oppose it.

oh... (0.00 / 0)
...dang, maybe I need to lay on the irony a little harder...

I read it the same way, Pogie. I just was pulling up some facts to show that the it's really the free traders who are the out-of-touch extremists...where Max fits in is Max' business.

It's more likely I need to re-fill the irony tank. By Friday, it's usually depleted. :)

Let's be self-sufficient (0.00 / 0)
Let's face it.  We'll always have trade, whether it's those canned Danish hams or Ferragamo shoes from Italy.

Trade agreements merely make it easier to ship manufacturing jobs overseas, and the same goes for our more affluent Western European friends.

With the price of gas, the diminishing supplies of oil, and the "buy local" movement, we can only hope that international trade on today's scale will be a thing of the past fairly soon.  Eventually, we won't be able to afford the cost of transportation associated with international trade.

The bottom line is that we would be better off if we became "self-sufficient," that is, learn to manufacture and produce using our own resources.  Other countries could do the same.  There will always be various items that countries will need to import, but we need to learn to live within our means, financially as well as resource extraction and labor.

We'd be safer too because we wouldn't be extracting resources and spreading corporate imperialism at other people's expense, creating ill-will around the world.

(Political) Wind Blows Baucus (0.00 / 0)
Baucus is like a plastic Safeway bag stuck on a barbed-wire fence.  When the wind blows strong enough, it breaks free of the fence, sailing back in the other direction. The way to tell them apart: the bag is more colorful in flight.

You're one to talk (0.00 / 0)
How many times did you switch parties? I could be mistaken of course, but Steve Kelly isn't that common of a name.

I'm sorry Mathello! (0.00 / 0)
I'm sorry to be so late to the table, but if I may, allow me to say that Steve Kelly, by whatever "party" name he has used, has always been "Steve Kelly." I like that!

Hmmm (0.00 / 0)
Didn't seem like it from 2002 to now, but hey that's my opinions. And like assholes all people have both.
