| Deputy Secretary of the Interior Lynn Scarlett announced today a reversal of the USFWS's recent decision to eliminate tribal involvement in management of the National Bison Range.
The Confederated Salish and Kootenai tribes began a phased in role, with the ultimate goal of full tribal managment of the National Bison Range, in late 2005. Today's reversal by the Interior Department suspends full phase-in.
Plans include the addition of an ombudsman to help sort out issues related to management of the range.

| jhwygirl :: Feds reverse USFWS on tribal role in Bison Range managment |
| I think this is good news folks - the tribes deserve full control over the bison - and hopefully this months issues are a blip in what should ultimately be full control.
Peer.org has a list of articles on the Bison Range issues, several devoted to the topic of the loss of jobs by the USFWS employees. And KECI here in Missoula has a brief interview with a USFWS employee, who states: "Todays decision is and insult to the USFWS." (sorry, no link folks)
Previously, local ranchers defended Tribal managment and control of the Bison Range, saying that there had "been no neglect."
Personally, I think this was/is nothing more than a turf war, instigated by the Feds, and fed by the irrational fear of job loss. Undoubtedly, the federal employees are being reassigned, so what's the problem? |
