Robert Reich Endorses Obama: Cites Clinton's "Republicanism" as Reason

Robert Reich came out and endorsed Barack Obama today on his blog. His explanation of his moves is a very telling story that likely is being played out in many Democratic heavy's heads right about now. It seems like Clinton's campaign tactics are backfiring in a big way.

Here's an excerpt from Robert Heilmann's interview with Reich today in the New York Magazine:

"She's an old friend," Reich said, "I've known her 40 years. I was absolutely dead set against getting into the whole endorsement thing. I've struggled with it. I've not wanted to do it. Out of loyalty to her, I just felt it would be inappropriate."

So what's changed? I asked Reich.

"I saw the ads" - the negative man-on-street commercials that the Clinton campaign put up in Pennsylvania in the wake of Obama's bitter/cling comments a week ago - "and I was appalled, frankly. I thought it represented the nadir of mean-spirited, negative politics. And also of the politics of distraction, of gotcha politics. It's the worst of all worlds. We have three terrible traditions that we've developed in American campaigns. One is outright meanness and negativity. The second is taking out of context something your opponent said, maybe inartfully, and blowing it up into something your opponent doesn't possibly believe and doesn't possibly represent. And third is a kind of tradition of distraction, of getting off the big subject with sideshows that have nothing to do with what matters. And these three aspects of the old politics I've seen growing in Hillary's campaign. And I've come to the point, after seeing those ads, where I can't in good conscience not say out loud what I believe about who should be president. Those ads are nothing but Republicanism. They're lending legitimacy to a Republican message that's wrong to begin with, and they harken back to the past 20 years of demagoguery on guns and religion. It's old politics at its worst - and old Republican politics, not even old Democratic politics. It's just so deeply cynical.""

Wow. (0.00 / 0)
Pretty reckless and irresponsible statement on Reich's part.

Why do you care if Hillary's a Republican and Obama's a Democrat anyway?  I thought you were a third party kind of guy.

Pretty reckless and irresponsible statement on Reich's part.

Would you like to elaborate on that?

I've said I lean Indy because I don't like getting brow-beaten (0.00 / 0)
into Clinton-style party loyalty. I'll always leave myself the opportunity to vote for a third party or write in candidate if I believe that to be a better choice than what the Dems offer up. If Clinton wins, I'll write in Obama. That being said, I've voted for, and worked for, far more Democrats than third party candidates. And statewide, I've worked on and/or supported most Democrat-endorsed ballot issues.

You have said that Obama supporters shouldn't alienate party loyalists like yourself needed to win in November. Likewise, Clinton risks her presidential bid if nominated by alienating Indy voters of all stripes. And if her negatives show one thing, it is that she is alienating party stalwarts (like Reich and Richardson) and Indy's, undecided, and swing voters. You can't win a general that way. And that is the heart of what Robert Reich has to say.

And It's odd that you think Robert Reich is reckless and irresponsible. I happen to think he was one of the highlights of the Clinton years, and I have a lot of respect for his opinion and record. I think he sums up a lot of the Democrat angst against Clinton very succinctly in his words.

Why do you place party loyalty over matters of integrity or principle?

There is a large body of Independents that swing Democrat <-> third party--particularly here in Montana. And this is the first time in many presidential election cycles that the Democratic candidate is actually appealing to them, trying to bring them back into the party. And I suspect the LitW has more than a few of us old leftist radicals in its ranks. Personally, I think that there is a whole lot of 60's peace/love (you know, the Bobby Kennedy/MLK crowd)  democratic  activists who didn't go yuppie that have a whole lot in common with today's young democratic constituents. I see them and work with them every day.

This "Hillary is a Republican" thing (0.00 / 0)
is simply a foolish line of reasoning, and I'm surprised to see it coming from him.
