Bill Moyers Interviews Rev. Jeremiah Wright

by: JC

Sat Apr 26, 2008 at 11:10:28 AM MST

(Isn't journalism done well a thing of beauty? - promoted by Jay Stevens)

Last night's interview of Jeremiah Wright by Bill Moyers was fascinating. So much so, that after watching the dvr recording of it, instead of deleting it, I decided to save it to show to my daughter, and to other people who might be interested, or to watch it again.

It wasn't what I expected. Moyers gracefully allowed Jeremiah Wright to unveil himself in front of a national audience. Gone were the gotcha moments and sound bite-seeking furies of so many other interviews we've seen through this campaign cycle. Moyers skillfully worked Wright's history, the history of black America, and current political events together with religious history to build the context, so painfully absent in today's main stream media, needed to understand Wright's remarks. And with that we begin to understand not only Barack Obama's association with Rev. Wright, but we take another step forward in the discussion on race that Obama began with his speech in Philadelphia.

For any who want to discuss the Wright affair, this show is a must watch. Anytime anybody wants to point to Wright's remarks as a reason to denigrate Obama, I will say: "have you seen Wright's interview with Moyer where he builds the context for his statements?" And if they say no, or refuse, then there is little to talk about. I don't know how I can convey the subtleties and nuances of the Moyers/Wright interview to people who have no knowledge of the black church, prophetic preaching, or liberation theology.

Now if only we could get other interviewers and reporters to follow Moyers' lead. And I'd love to see Moyers do a followup on this story with Barack Obama.

JC :: Bill Moyers Interviews Rev. Jeremiah Wright
Here's an excerpt from the interview, talking about the "goddamn America" sound bites that have swamped the airwaves:

BILL MOYERS: When I hear the word "black liberation theology" being the interpretation of scripture from the oppressed, I think well, that's the Jewish story--

REVEREND WRIGHT: Exactly, exactly. From Genesis to Revelation. These are people who wrote the word of God that we honor and love under Egyptian oppression, Syrian oppression, Babylonian oppression, Persian oppression, Greek oppression, Roman oppression. So that their understanding of what God is saying is very different from the Greeks, the Romans, the Egyptians. And that's what prophetic theology of the African-American church is.

BILL MOYERS: Yeah. But talk a little bit about that. The prophets loved Israel. But they hated the waywardness of Israel. And they were calling Israel out of love back to justice, not damning--

REVEREND WRIGHT: Exactly.

BILL MOYERS: Not damning Israel. Right?

REVEREND WRIGHT: Right. They were saying that God was-- in fact, if you look at the damning, condemning, if you look at Deuteronomy, it talks about blessings and curses, how God doesn't bless everything. God does not bless gang-bangers. God does not bless dope dealers. God does not bless young thugs that hit old women upside the head and snatch their purse. God does not bless that. God does not bless the killing of babies. God does not bless the killing of enemies. And when you look at blessings and curses out of that Hebrew tradition from the book of Deuteronomy, that's what the prophets were saying, that God is not blessing this. God does not bless it- bless us. And when we're calling them, the prophets call them to repentance and to come back to God. If my people who are called by my name, God says to Solomon, will humble themselves and pray, seek my faith and turn from their wicked ways. God says that wicked ways, not Jeremiah Wright, then will I hear from heaven.

BILL MOYERS: One of the most controversial sermons that you preach is the sermon you preach that ended up being that sound bite about Goddamn America.

[video of Rev. Wright delivering these remarks the week after 9/11] REVEREND JEREMIAH WRIGHT: Where governments lie, God does not lie. Where governments change, God does not change. And I'm through now. But let me leave you with one more thing. Governments fail. The government in this text comprised of Caesar, Cornelius, Pontius Pilate - the Roman government failed. The British government used to rule from East to West. The British government had a Union Jack. She colonized Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad and Hong Kong. Her navies ruled the seven seas all the way down to the tip of Argentina in the Falklands, but the British government failed. The Russian government failed. The Japanese government failed. The German government failed. And the United States of America government, when it came to treating her citizens of Indian descent fairly, she failed. She put them on reservations. When it came to treating her citizens of Japanese descent fairly, she failed. She put them in internment prison camps. When it came to treating citizens of African descent fairly, America failed. She put them in chains. The government put them on slave quarters, put them on auction blocks, put them in cotton fields, put them in inferior schools, put them in substandard housing, put them in scientific experiments, put them in the lowest paying jobs, put them outside the equal protection of the law, kept them out of their racist bastions of higher education and locked them into position of hopelessness and helplessness. The government gives them the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes a three-strike law, and then wants us to sing God bless America? No, no, no. Not God bless America; God damn America! That's in the Bible, for killing innocent people. God damn America for treating her citizen as less than human. God damn America as long as she keeps trying to act like she is God and she is supreme!

BILL MOYERS: What did you mean when you said that?

REVEREND WRIGHT: When you start confusing God and government, your allegiances to government -a particular government and not to God, that you're in serious trouble because governments fail people. And governments change. And governments lie. And those three points of the sermon. And that is the context in which I was illustrating how the governments biblically and the governments since biblical times, up to our time, changed, how they failed, and how they lie. And when we start talking about my government right or wrong, I don't think that goes. That is consistent with what the will of God says or the word of God says that governments don't say right or wrong. That governments that wanna kill innocents are not consistent with the will of God. And that you are made in the image of God, you're not made in the image of any particular government. We have the freedom here in this country to talk about that publicly, whereas some other places, you're dead if say the wrong thing about your government.

funny how all these so called reverends, who crawl up into the democrat party lap to get their heads patted, always get a pass for their racist and hate mongering comments. And the big liberal hype spinning wheel keep on turning.

Gee, if you haven't watched the piece, (4.00 / 1)
then you wouldn't know that one comment of Wright's was repeating what a US Ambassador had said the day before (chickens coming home to roost).

The other was about the morality of killing innocents in revenge.

Wright was making the point that God makes no distinction as to one country's moral authority over another's when it comes to the killing of innocents in revenge. God damns the actions of all countries equally when innocents are killed in revenge.

There is nothing Democratic or liberal about Wright's interpretations.

What there is, is a pathetic right-wing sense of smug superiority when saying that "God is on our side," when clearly God condemns (damns) all immoral acts equally.

Or maybe you just don't find the act of killing innocent babies in revenge as being morally reprehensible?

I think you can't read.  But then I realize that you just don't have good reading comprehension skills.  So try rereading the passage above and see if you come to the same conclusion.  You also might try an attention-enhancing drug.

Larkspur

Rev. Wright at the National Press Club today (0.00 / 0)
among many other things, said the following during the Q&A:

In his responses to several questions about his controversial sermons (such as when he said blacks should sing "God damn America" rather than "God bless America), Wright has challenged the questioners -- asking if they have heard or read the sermons in their entirety. If they have not, "that nullifies that question," he said, because hs remarks have been taken out of context.

He's one smart cookie. He had the National Press Club enthralled with his appearance (the link is to a Real Player file--if it doesn't work, you may need to go to the C-Span page and find the file yourself, until it gets posted elsewhere).

And how strategic can that be? Go right to the heart of the press community with his side of the story.

Yesterday Rev. Wright spoke to the Detroit branch in front of 10,000 people. This is what the local branch president, Rev. Wendell Anthony, had to say about him:

"The hottest brother in America right now, besides Barack Obama, is Jeremiah Wright," Anthony said. "It's about speaking truth to power. We must not allow anyone to dictate what can be said from the pulpit of the African American church or any church."

and a hot brother, eh?  And of course Obama says he's never seen this side of him before.  BS!!!!! Just another one of his damn lies.  Fifty and counting:
