From the Mountain Top, Ochenski Endorses...

Mike Wheat for Attorney General.

From the column:

Let me make it clear from the outset that any of the three Democratic contenders for Attorney General would undoubtedly do a great job. Bullock has been an assistant AG and has worked on the stream access issues that are near and dear to Montanans' hearts. Parker paid his dues in the horrendous last legislative session, battling headstrong Republicans through a vicious 90 days of party-line votes and ugly debate. Both men are young, smart and ambitious, so Montana can't really lose if either one of them winds up in the AG's office.
Those are pretty fair statements about Bullock and Parker coming from someone endorsing their opponent.

Ochenski's words on why Wheat:

Winnowing the chaff from the wheat, so to speak, isn't easy, but the reason Mike Wheat stands out is, simply put, his compassion. [...] Wheat, like Parker, was a county prosecutor in Butte many years back. But unlike Parker, his focus is not about what a tough prosecutor he's going to be-in fact, of the three candidates, Wheat is the only one who personally opposes the death penalty. In a recent interview on the blog Left in the West, (which has great interviews of all three candidates), [Hey, look, Jay -- we're famous!] Wheat put it this way: "We cannot, in our constitutional jurisprudence system, guarantee that the people we're killing for crimes actually committed the crime. And so, to me, it's very simple. If you can't guarantee that, then you're denying the constitutional rights to people who may be innocent."
That's also a great summation of one of the best arguments for backing Mike Wheat.

I think it is also tough to overstate the value of this in the race. Most papers won't endorse. The Independent gets pretty broad distribution in a big ol' Democratic stronghold. This could easily move a few thousand votes in a comparatively low-information race.

Thank you Ochenski!

Well reasoned.  Thank you for your opinion and your leadership.

Ochenski endorsement (0.00 / 0)
I would like to suggest that Mr. Ochenski check with the other candidates as to when they feel the death penalty would be appropriate.  Knowing the other two candidates, I can't believe that either would recommend "killing" someone that could possibly be innocent.  If that's the best argument for backing Wheat it's pretty lame!

Wheat is the best. (0.00 / 0)
Mike Wheat is a wonderful man and would be the best AG for so many reasons.  He's someone who isn't afraid to stand up for what he believes in.  You need more than an AG who agrees with you on issues, you need an AG who is willing to act on her/his beliefs.

A columnist friend had an pretty busy schedule recently, and was afraid that a deadline was going to be missed.  He asked if I could help out.  I told him he should think twice, because I "belong to the church of Ochenski."

We both laughed.

Yes but, George, WHO is the best qualified to... (0.00 / 0)
sit on the state land board?  That's how I'll determine whom to vote for.  Help me out here, George.  I know you will because you know these things.

Wheat's environmental record (4.00 / 1)
Larry -

I worked with Mike during his two legislative sessions as a senator and he was great...including as the Senate sponsor of the resolution opposing access fees to national forest lands and asking Congress to repeal the Recreation Access Tax (also known in Bush-speak as the Federal Lands Recreational Enhancement Act).

Wheat got a 92% from MEIC in 03 and a 100% in 05 and Anne Hedges, MEIC's lobbyist and staffer who has been working on the Highwood plant, told me, and I quote: "Wheat wasn't just good, he was one of our champions last session."

As I said in the column, I think all three candidates for AG would do a good job -- and we're lucky to have them.  I did not do research on Steve or John's environmental records, because I didn't discuss that in the column.

So, if the land board is a concern in this race, and it should be, Wheat's environmental record has to be just as good as anyone's since you really can't get much better than 100%.

Parker should have a voting record available from Mt Conservation Voters, NPRC, MEIC, etc., so you can check it if you want.  I guess given your position and activity on fighting Highwood, you might also want to check out his stance on that project.

Bullock hasn't voted on anything since he wasn't in the legislature or a major office holder, so other than what he's worked on both as AG and in his private practice, there's no record to quote.

Hope this helps. - GO
