In defense of federalism

Overhead on C-Span:

As governor of Montana, I connect closely with Canada. Three Canadian provinces border on Montana, and I work with them and observe how they do things. In Canada the provinces have more autonomy than American states. They have the kind of sovereignty that our states formerly had, and because of their autonomy, they do things better than we do. They have better health care, better education, and better resource management. We desperately need to learn from this example. American governors need to say No and Hell No to federal requirements when they prevent us from doing our proper job.

I like. With the caveat, of course, that federal intervention is necessary when state autonomy leads to the violation of individual rights.

Isn't it odd how the Republican party has become the ideology of centralized, federal power?

Not sure if we should leave health care up to the states, though if we did it the way Canada did it might be alright. On the other hand, it certainly would be nice if the feds got the hell out of the way on, say, California's gas mileage requirements.

...why the good guv appeals to many R's.  Less Federal fiddlin' is right up most of their allies.....Get that guy a gun, a dog, & a shot at the M&M. Check, check, & check.

If he could bring Johnny Cash back from the dead he'd be VP material for sure.

I'm very impressed. Obviously, as Jay stated, individual rights trump all, but I am optimistic about good Governors putting the feds in their place.
