Friday thoughts...

by: Jay Stevens

Man, I'm behind. It's to experience a convention and write about it, too. I got home last night late and  exhausted, Invesco field didn't have wireless, and the trad media hogged all the network cables, so I wasn't able to write much there...

I took video, but it might a while before I get it online. I can't find the transfer cable; it's somewhere in my hotel room, which is littered with clothes, potato chip bags, backpacks, business cards, and Convention swag.

Quick thoughts.

I was down on the floor with the Montana delegation, and they had amazing seats, a couple dozen rows or so back from the podium. Our New York friends were behind us, we were now flanked by Missouri and Alaska and Florida.

I can't express how awe-inspiring it is to stand in the middle of Invesco field with 70,000 excited people in the stands. Like standing at the bottom of an enormous barrell, and when the crowd yells you can feel it in your bones. Imagine what Schweitzer would have done with this crowd.

Jay Stevens :: Friday thoughts...
Highlights: will.i.am and John Legend playing the "Yes We Can" college; that really got the crowd going. Al Gore's appearance. John Lewis' speech. Barney Smith! (In the video, you can't really hear how the crowd drowned Smith out and kept chanting "Bar-ney, Bar-ney!" for minutes after he delivered the line.)

Obama.

Again, I just want to emphasize the difference between being at the Convention and seeing it live. For one, watching the videos afterwards, it's clear that sound engineers lower the crowd volume when it interferes with the speechifyin'. It's a vastly different experience: on the floor, the crowd seemed more in control of the speech.

A funny story about how I got to Invesco field -- they were running shuttle busses all day long for delegates and credentialed presss -- and here's a conversation I had on 17th today at approximately 12:46pm, after a night with three hours of sleep:

A city street. A bus in traffic, stopped. The doors open. A policeman leans out and gestures.

Jay: Me?

Policeman: You want a ride to Invesco field?

Jay: You want to know where Invesco field is? I have a map... Takes out a map.

Policeman: Shakes his head. No. Do you want a ride to Invesco field?

Jay: Do they have food there? I haven't had lunch yet...

Policeman: Yes, they have food at Invesco field.

Jay: Hops on. Thanks...

Unfortunately the cop was wearing sunglasses, so I wasn't able to see his look of frustration as he tried to talk some sleep-deprived idiot onto a bus. Good times.
