The terror that must not be named

by: Jay Stevens

Thu Oct 30, 2008 at 07:46:17 AM MST

So, two Tennessee neo-Nazis were involved in a plot to kill Barack Obama and over a hundred school children.

Now we haven't heard much lately about "Islamo-fascism" and the Islamic plot to take over the world -- most of the nutjobs are busy scanning Obama's birth certificate and pondering whether he's a Maoist or Stalinist -- but this is something that's stuck in my craw for some time, the belief that terror and violence is owned by a particular religion or particular region.

Is the plot serious? Is it overblown? Who knows. What I do know is that right-wing militia and white supremacist groups operating in this country do pose a threat. Heck, I'd argue they were a bigger threat than Islamic terrorists. Me, then:

My point is that terrorism isn't inherently Islamic - or even religious - or the purveyance of dark-skinned illegal immigrants. To simplify the problem to a set of preprogrammed ideological values only diminishes the complexity of the problem.

The "enemy" isn't a group of people you can sort out by skin color or religious affiliation or nationality. They're not even an "enemy," but a bunch of degenerate criminals.

How can... (0.00 / 1)
Obama's birth certificate be scanned when it's under lock and key in Hawaii?  How can anything else about this guy be scanned when he won't release any of his records?

Would you please post the body counts of Islamic terrorist acts versus right wing militia and white supremacist acts?

And how about those left-wingers like William Ayers, who bomb our country, kill and terrorize our citizens and not only do they get off Scott-free they teach in our universities.

"Guilty as sin, free as a bird, it's a great country" Ayers while he stands on an American flag.  Piece of excrement.

Just look at the smirk on the face of this son of a bitch.  Your witness counselor for the defense.

See? I told you these guys are too busy obsession about their fantasies of Obama to keep up the talk on "Islamofascism"!

What an argument. (0.00 / 0)
You set up a balancing scale, piling bodies on both sides, and make your conclusion that Obama's a terrorist.  Non-sequitur to say the least and a frightening degree of selective morality based on intentional historical ignorance.

Let me pile a few more bodies on your macabre scale.  Like the uncounted thousands of people lynched by "right wing militia and white supremacists" in recent US history.  Here are some photos (warning - graphic).

A few other links, for reference should you choose to examine the facts behind your defense of hate.

I'm sorry..... (0.00 / 0)
if you're offended with my bluntness, but that's what happens when terrorists act...body counts.  Jay stated that white supremacists need to be feared more than Islamic terrorists and that just is ludicrous.

I did not call Obama a terrorist.  I did call attention to one of his friends and associates, William Ayers, which you obviously feel you need to defend. I did look at your reference links and they are disgusting to say the least.  William Ayers, his comrades and what they did are equally disgusting and I submit that Obama has shown extremely poor judgment in his association with Ayers through out the years.

Now Bob, since you appear to have the facts at your finger tips please provide the following information:

Name one person closely associated with Barack Obama (other than a member of his family or fellow legislator) who isn't either an anti-American zealot, a racist, a hard-line Democrat party hack, a terrorist, a communist or a felon.

Name one foreign terrorist group, terrorist-supporting regime or communist dictatorship (which has made its preference known) that supports John McCain's presidential bid over Barack Obama's.

I'll leave you with this...When the character of a man is not clear to you, look at his friends.--Japanese proverb

Obama: Powell will have a role in administration
Colin Powell will have a role as a top presidential advisor in an Obama administration, the Democratic White House hopeful said Monday.

Words from an Army mom:

How dare you Colin Powell?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please help me find a way to get this in front of Colin Powell. My family deserves that much. If I could afford it I would run a newspaper ad. I know he won't change but I need to know that he has to live with this. I am sorry that it is so long but I am just so angry.

General Powell,

You told us that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, and that ' Iraq harbors a deadly terrorist network'. We doubted George Bush, but we believed YOU. And my son went to Iraq to serve his country, and protect democracy. There were no WMD's, but you assured us that Saddam 'had the intent and the capability' of making them. Of the missing terrorists, you assured us that you 'had seen some links and connections between Iraq and terror groups over time.' And my son died believing in your words, and the value of his own service.

In 2006, when they proposed a surge, you re-emerged and told us that a surge would not work. You said that we were losing in Iraq , and our army was worn out. I thought my heart would break. It was like losing my son all over again, because I felt like his death had been for nothing. Because we still believed you. You told us we could believe in you.

We started to hear that the surge was working - but you kept saying that it was not, and it never would. So we doubted the other reports, and worried that we were being lied to. (Even though we could not actually remember a time when you were right. ) Because we still believed you.

Then came the talk of a Presedential campaign. You did an interview, where you were described as a 'political animal'. Your wife announced that 'George Bush used you, because people would believe you' - as if that absolves you of responsibility. But it doesn't. It means that you betrayed the trust we gave you - that my son gave you. I want to cry when I think that your 'mistakes' may have just been politics.

Now you have re-appeared again, to endorse Barack Obama. The Obama who told us that entering Iraq was a mistake, and our son's death was for nothing. The Obama who wanted to cut off funding from our troops. The Obama who agreed with you that a surge would not work. The Obama who wants to spread the wealth, like the Socialist leaders we have struggled against around the world.

At first I wondered why you would even think we would believe you again. But I found myself wondering, 'Why would you do such a thing? Why would you endorse a man that is so opposite of everything my son fought and died for?' I absolutely reject your claim that you just decided in the last few weeks to endorse him. (When the financial crisis and 'vitriol' really began. ) You might sell that story to some people, but not to a military family. You are known as a precise person who leaves nothing to accident. And the General knows to hold his reserves, and commit them at the moment they will have the greatest impact. The timing of your announcement was calculated to help you achieve an objective - as always.

Your condemnation of John McCain for questioning Obama's relationship with Ayers is shameful. You know better than most Americans what Ayers represents. His bombings in the 60's are not the issue. It is his continued work as a Socialist revolutionary. His trips to Venezuela to flirt with and encourage the revolutionaries in Central America . His crusade to indoctrinate teachers and students behind the closed doors of our schools. If there is even a possibility that Barack Obama does have ties to this man we have a right and an obligation, to ask questions. And it frightens me that people are being attacked for asking questions in our free society.

Need I remind you that you justified the invasion of a country on less evidence of terrorism ties! You killed a man because he 'had the intent' to build weapons of mass destruction - as if you are God himself, who can read peoples' thoughts. We learned most of our anti-terror rhetoric under your watch.

The questions about Ayers were originally asked during the primaries, by Democrats. When Obama was finally forced to answer, he told us things that we knew to be untrue. You can't blame John McCain for that, or for giving voice to our lingering questions. 'We The People' demanded that he ask them. And you, sir, have no right to condemn him for doing his duty to the country. You should be doing the same.

You say the Republican Party has grown 'too extreme'? You are obviously marketing to the 18-year olds who don't remember who you used to be. You were a prostitute for an ultra right-wing conservative, and now you have become a prostitute for an ultra left-wing liberal. Barack Obama is the single most liberal member of our Senate, which makes him more extreme than Nancy Pelosi and just right of Hugo Chavez. You don't give a damn about ideology.

Your endorsement speech was carefully crafted for the maximum effect, with its not-so-subtle racial undertones. Did you think we were too stupid to notice? Barack Obama can cross boundaries (because he is 'of color', and John McCain is not. ) Barack Obama will value the life of a Muslim soldier (because he is 'of color', and John McCain is not. ) You don't like the vitriol coming from the Republican side (because it is racially motivated ) Those sentiments are unworthy of John McCain, of the uniform you wear, and of our country.

There is a special corner of hell reserved for you, sir. Give our regards to Saddam Hussein.

As far as Al Queda supporting McCain, I say hogwash.  Their words may say one thing, but their money says quite another.

I'm not offended by blunt arguments, which can be very effective.  I disagreed with the facts offered in support of that argument, the framing of the argument (and the "name one" questions), and an extension of the argument that you may not have intended.  That being, we should abhor Obama more than the people who expressed an intent to kill him.  If that's so, then is the conclusion of your argument that you pick the lesser of your perceived "evils" and choose to support the hate engendered in an express assasination plan targeting a US presidential candidate?

I read Jay's post not as a defense of terrorism by any person, but as an opportunity to examine terrorism as something not "owned by a particular religion or particular region."  To separate the connection of extremism from religious ideology can be a fruitful opportunity to learn, to see more clearly even, and to deal with irrational fears.  The complex and rich history of Islamic scientific and philosophical achievements and appreciation for the vast majority of Islamic people, who are religiously, philosophically, morally opposed to terrorism, is lost through simplistic racist ideology.

Jay's fine at defending his statements, but he did not say anything about fear and who should be feared more, nor did I mention Ayres.

That terrorism assumes many forms, and that all of those forms are unacceptable, I sincerely hope is common ground for us.  Fear also assumes many forms and is quite powerful.  It drives people to awful conclusions and even worse actions.  It has already driven you to the conclusion that any person I could possibly name (as if I know people "closely associated" with Obama or McCain, whatever that means) can easily be placed in one of those to-be-feared categories.  That's an awful lot of categorizing you have to do, and the fear to back it up and hate it engenders has got to be a heavy load to bear.  Hate takes a lot of energy and I encourage you to let yourself off the hook.

Do not look upon this world with fear and loathing. Bravely face whatever the gods offer.  - Japanese proverb
