The Audacity of Hate

by: Matt Singer

Fri Oct 31, 2008 at 12:14:53 PM MST

There's a simply unbelievable story in USA Today about Dan Cooper, a Bitterroot gunsmith, whose livelihood came under fire from nutjobs across the country because he had the audacity to contribute to Barack Obama's campaign for President.

Cooper had a chance to talk one-on-one with Obama regarding gun ownership and is confident that his gun rights are safe under an Obama Presidency. But it seems pretty clear that as long as the lunatic fringe is as powerful on gun issues as it is that this talented gunsmith will have to look for other work.

The irony here is that this is happening at the same time that Obama's campaign is being attacked for not supporting freedom of speech.

In Missoula, I considered for some time not spending my money at businesses that I knew were owned by local Republicans. A political boycott had a certain schoolyard appeal. I ended up rejecting the idea, concluding that for all my disagreements with those folks, that they weren't a fundamental threat to my way of life and I'd be silly to treat them as though they were.

As time has gone on, I've become increasingly convinced that the ratcheted up nonsense coming from the far right over the insane dangers of electing Barack Obama will boil over soon as some surrogate goes on TV and ends up spewing, "But...but...but he's black!" Alternate possibility -- on election night, about 7 million far-right conservatives will have the first collective aneurysm in the known history of humanity when the networks call it for Obama.

There's a really bizarre paranoid fear out there regarding Obama that I just can't figure out. It's pretty hard to believe that it isn't racial. It's kind of like if the entire grassroots left was convinced not only that we didn't especially like John McCain and Sarah Palin but that John McCain is a Manchurian candidate and that Sarah Palin is a robot sent from the future with an accent programmed after watching Fargo. Or something. Crazy. Ya know?

I just don't get it.

I don't know what can be done for Dan Cooper. Maybe he'll find some way to keep making rifles and maybe some of those numerous sane hunters and shooters on the left, right, and center can buy his rifles to show respect for his right to his completely mainstream political beliefs.

Or maybe we should all just fucking hate eachother.

Yeah, let's do that.

Important Distinction (0.00 / 0)
Cooper Firearms are finely tuned, top end weapons. The quality, care, craftsmanship, and performance of a Cooper single shot .223 is unparalleled. I am not blowing smoke here, these guns are phenomenal objects of desire. In case I am not making myself crystal clear here, read this description from their website of the "One Shot Competition"

Shooter (sic) get one shot at a dot the size of a pencil eraser at 150 yards.

This "my friends" is a class of gun enthusiast not represented by the MSM or NRA. It makes perfect sense to me that Dan Cooper is cut above the Republican rhetoric of hate.

I just got off the phone with a very nice man Cooper Firearms. I politely expressed my disappointment at this turn of events, left my name and phone number, and asked for a response.

He told me to keep an eye on the website for updates and information. Now, I would post a phone number here for folks to call, but honestly I think if you don't own a Cooper you shouldn't bother.

Hopefully they call back, hopefully they see the gross negligence of their ways, but frankly the hate being manufactured by NRA types really could lead to fallout that impacts their business. And that is sad. I would like to think that they could stand by their founder, but apparently that is too much to ask.

yuppie comment ridiculous - not even close. (0.00 / 0)
one thing i have told democrats again and again is that you need to actually get out of your little enclaves and see where people are at these days. spend a half hour at a wal-mart. bowling alley. go to desperadoes instead of badlands once in awhile. you will actually get to meet new people who do things you don't do. it is good for you. if desperadoes is too much try charlies- they still have some of the real people left, usually hanging around charlie himself or hunched over a beer keeping to themselves.

let me enlighten you about varmint guns. purchased by car mechanics, sheet-rockers, carpet layers, tile setters, small business owners, and everything else you can imagine as indicative of blue collar or fairly sportsman like persuasion. but never ever yuppies.

i should know. i don't partake in the sport of varmint hunting but know several who are and just because they don't make a lot of money doesn't mean that they do not own a huge collection of fine arms. they do. believe me.

on the subject of the president of cooper arms resigning what was he thinking about sharing his personal political beliefs with anyone? as a past business owner i always kept my grandfather's wise words to heart:
if you own a business it is best to keep opinions about politics, religion and dogs to yourself. it is just not smart to alienate anyone who does business with you. keep mouth shut. ever since reagon came and made everybody who owns a business a robot parrotting republican platitudes, i keep my mouth shut about being a left leaning independent who supports Obama. my customers don't want to know how i vote and if they do it is really none of their business. that is why we have curtains in the polling booth.

do i think the NRA is over-reacting? Of course. they always do. and so do the people who support them. this should not be a big surprise to Mr Cooper. maybe he really just wants to retire, anyway.

United we stand, divided we fall.

power to the polite people!

Dear Fellow Business Owners

As a Business owner who employs 30 people, I have resigned myself to the fact that Barak Obama, will be our next President, and that my Taxes and Fees, will go up in a BIG way.

To compensate for these increases, I figure, that the Customer, will have to see an increase in my fees to them of about, 8%. I will also have to lay off 6 of my employees. This really bothered me as I believe we are family here and didn't know how to choose who will have to go.

So, this is what I did. I strolled thru the parking lot and found 8 Obama bumper stickers on my employee's cars. I have decided these folks will be the first to be laid off.

I can't think of another fair way to approach this problem. If you have a better idea, let me know.

I am sending this letter to all Business owners that I know.

Sincerely
Ward
JOOA Corp.

thanks for the bogus email! (0.00 / 0)
I love these little viral emails. They so demonstrate the hate Matt was talking about.

BTW, there is no such place as the "JOOA Corp." Most small businesses, of course, will be delighted with the tax cuts and tax credits they'll see under Obama, and most big businesses will be glad to see the economic stability and prosperity that typically accompanies a Democratic administration.

There's nothing like putting money back in customers' pockets where it belongs to benefit business.

the Jimmy Carter administration sure did provide a economic stability and prosperity now didn't it?  Standby by for Jimmy Carter II.

Here's something to look forward to on Christmas morning...

It is apparent that the job of being President isn't attracting the caliber of people it used to. Having Obama and Biden in the White House will be like waking up on Christmas Morning and finding a couple of hemorrhoids dangling on your Christmas tree.

Hate you say.  How about these folks?

In planning his Inaugural Ceremony, will Obama ask William Ayres to wear his muddiest shoes to wipe on an American flag? In that same spirit, Jeremiah Wright will lead the choir in singing God Damn America. After Obama takes the oath, his Priest buddy, James Pfleger, will spit on the Bible.

Thanks Norman, you da man!!!
