Worshipping the golden calf

Thinking about Prop 8 and the nation-wide effort to block gay marriage by a number of Christian churches reminded me of this picture (via Wonkette):

(Also, check out the video.)

What the h*ll's going on, you ask? It's a group of 700 Club Christians praying to God to restore the economy. Over a golden calf. Seriously.

So what does this have to do with gay marriage? Simple. Pat Robertson and the other televangelicals and mega-church leaders have risen to political prominence on the issues of abortion and gay marriage -- really, issues not at all central to the gospel. In short, they've used these issues to attack groups with little political or economic power -- gays and impoverished women -- while...well, I think the picture explains where the interests of many church leaders lie.

Now I don't mean this to be attack on my neighbors or friends who are conservative Christians. I do understand they feel that homosexuality is a sin, and against what God instructs. Personally, I feel they're misguided -- and no doubt they feel the same about me  -- but I'm not going to deny them their beliefs. (Believe me, I'd consider disowning my son if he announced he was going to marry a Yankee fan.)

Too often it seems that those who brandish the issue are looking for a way to raise funds, stir up the electorate against their own economic and political best interests, and to use religion to advance their own political ambition. But the issue isn't about religion, it's about the state, and whether we use the power of government to define how citizens operate their personal lives.

Is that the Merrill Lynch symbol, or is it Mooby?

Utterly, well, mostly unrelated (0.00 / 0)
but my kids like to watch Funniest Home videos occasionally, which around here immediately precedes the 700 club.  Toward the end of a recent show the advertisement came on for it, and they were hyping that soon it would be available in HD.  Now, I can think of a lot of cool shows or sporting events I'd like to watch in high definition, but some wrinkly preacher isn't one.  I'm still smiling about that one.

That's a scene from the last Testival Festicle.

You're off track Jay - (0.00 / 0)
Nothing in any ballot initiative calls being a queer a sin, the legislation simply defines a legal definition of marriage, which is entirely under the authority of government. Have you by chance ever heard of the Defense of Marriage Act that your hero Bill Clinton signed in 1996?

my "hero"? (0.00 / 0)
You never answered my question. Why do you care? You're married, right? Why the f*ck do you care who else gets married? Why is that any of your business? And why do you want to enlist the state to uphold your particular ideas of decorum?

Denying the conservative Christians their beliefs (0.00 / 0)
What do you mean, Jay, when you say you're "not going to deny them their beliefs," when speaking of Christians who believe homosexuality is a sin?   I understand your desire not to alienate, which I commend you for--especially when it involves people forcing others to go along with it.   But I do not believe they are right in their view of homosexuality, based as it is on a a text whose authority is highly questionable.   (I also do not believe adultery is a sin--though once I did.)   These people  certainly are not right in forcing their view on others--as supporters of Prop 8 in Calif. have done.  Please note, however, that during the Civil Rights Movement I welcomed the support of religious theology in forcing this society by law to stop racist behavior.  But that was because there were ample non-religious, non-theological grounds for forbidding racist behavior.  I also "deny" the beliefs of that other major source of anti-gay marriage, and anti-homosexuality: that homosexuality is a choice.  It's been too discredited scientifically.  But don't get me started on my theory of what else I think these anti-homosexual beliefs are based upon.
