Bailout Question

(A little debate on the auto bailout... - promoted by Jay Stevens)

I sent Jay's post, Let's keep the good jobs, to a friend this morning. We had been discussing the bailout this weekend and Jay did an excellent job of saying what I meant. My friend replied with the following email...

Wasn't the bailout for about 15 billion dollars...............and they're saying that a collapse will put 3 million people out of a job?  How about just giving all those people the 15 billion.......(which would be 5 million a piece).  What sort of impact would that have.........where 3 million people "burst onto" the economy with that much money to blow!

Now I understand this would be massively disruptive to the auto industry supply chain, but it strikes an interesting chord. Just protect the people and let the companies die. What exactly is wrong with that anyway? It seems like it would be a lot cheaper, because let's be honest, $5 million apiece is a bit exorbitant.

Update: (from Jay) That's actually $5,000 apiece, Gerik!

Instead of giving workers a one-time $5,000 check, giving the industry a bailout would preserve workers' paychecks, health care, and pensions, along with preserving the equipment and factories that can be used for national security purposes, if needed.

Not much of a filter in my brain for numbers (0.00 / 0)
And yes $5000 apiece seems paltry compared with all the benefits associated with staying employed.

Here's some math (0.00 / 0)
15 billion dollars would out and out buy 600,000 cars costing $25,000. GM is closing 20 factories next quarter, and laying off tens of thousands to cut production by 250,000 autos.

Question? Why in the hell doesn't Congress create a package of incentives for auto purchasers to buy green and efficient autos from  U.S. manufactured and owned companies? Let the company get bailed out by its customers purchasing vehicles. After all, that is GM's business: to sell cars.

Answer? Because Congress (and the Bush/Cheney oil legacy administration) has its collective head in its *ss when it comes to directing this nation's economy and innovation on the energy front. It is too used to throwing good money after bad, more interested in providing tax breaks to oil companies than in shifting this nation's auto production greenward.

Use the $15b (and use TARP money and force lenders to provide for the rest of the auto loans needed to purchase said cars) to give a tax credit or rebate on green vehicles at a significant enough level to encourage shifting people's purchasing habits towards Amerigreen cars.

There's my arm chair economic back seat driving for the day.
