Montana Senate Votes to Abolish Death Penalty, Opt for Life Imprisonment Instead

by: Matt Singer

Mon Feb 16, 2009 at 16:03:29 PM MST

The Montana Senate just voted 27-23 to abolish the death penalty. This is second reading, so it ain't a done deal yet, but 27-23 is a healthy margin. Lots of aisle crossing here, and not always from usual suspects.

How reliable are the two Brown votes?

Maybe I could just look for myself. :) (0.00 / 0)
Roy Brown's vote seems pretty secure. I doubt the House will pass it, but it's interesting to see more Republicans coming around.

Roy Brown's is absolutely secure (0.00 / 0)
He had quite the speech.  He's been on board since the get-go, at least this time around.

Few surprises from the Republicans in there, as well as a few very disappointing Dem votes.

As someone who has gone on record ... (0.00 / 0)
as a proponent of capital punishment, I can live with this.  I still believe that we need a concerted effort and program to identify societal diseases that walk like men, (sociopaths, deep psychotics) such that they never plague the polity again.  But I am willing to admit that killing based on "reasonable doubt" is not likely the best path.

And, though this is slightly sidelike to the topic, the worst heritage we passed to the Iraqi people and their law was our adoration of murder for revenge.

I'm a cynic. (0.00 / 0)
Look, some of the righties crossing the aisle may be just a ploy to say, "Hey, lookie here.  We really ARE pro-life in everthin'!".  Then WHAMMO!  When comes back around to the abortion debates, they can claim to be pro-life.  Remember, they have been hit with the death penalty  stick for a long time.  We'll just have to wait and see.  The Pubbies ain't stupid.  The abortion issue is MUCH more an emotional recruiting tool than the death penalty ever will be.
