Matthew Koehler Writes Letters

I wonder when the school board will leap into action over this lack of "balance:"
Since some members of the MCPS School Board have banned the "Story of Stuff" because it didn't include a "balanced perspective" or "the other side of the story," I would like to alert all MCPS Trustees to an egregious "one-sided" educational situation in our public schools that happens every spring, year after year.

It's called "Forest Discovery Days" and it's sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, Smurfit-Stone Container, Plum Creek Timber Company and Roseburg Forest Products.

Every year, over 500 area students are treated to a totally one-sided view of forestry, logging, wildfire and forest health issues from major timber corporations with no apparent "balance" or "other side" provided by one of the many fine conservation organizations in the Missoula area.

Clearly, given the calls by some MCPS Trustees for a "balanced perspective" or "the other side of the story" any MCPS involvement with "Forest Discovery Days" should be immediately canceled until such a time that "Forest Discovery Days" includes a more "balanced perspective."

Please get back with me as soon as possible to let me know just how the MCPS Trustees plan to deal with the egregious "one-sided" educational situation regarding the annual "Forest Discovery Days" sponsored by Smurfit-Stone Container, Plum Creek Timber Company and Roseburg Forest Products.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,
Matthew Koehler
Missoula, MT

P.S. It's worth noting that none of the Trustees who received the email below even bothered to acknowledge receipt or get back with me regarding my concerns.

Subject: RE: Your decision to ban The Story of Stuff

Hello,

As a certified secondary history and English teacher, and as a homeowner and taxpayer in Missoula County, I'm absolutely outraged at your recent decision to ban The Story of Stuff by Annie Leonard. What's next?

Your decision sets a very bad example for all the children in Missoula County Public Schools.  You can bet that if any of your names show up on our ballot for the school board that you'll be getting no support from our household.

Good day,
Matthew Koehler

Just to be clear... (0.00 / 0)
The first short letter I wrote on February 5th was sent only to the four trustees who voted to ban "The Story of Stuff" (ie Drake Lemm, Kelley Hirning, Rick Johns, James Sadler). I didn't send that letter to the entire School Board, so I just wanted to clarify that because I wouldn't want anyone to think that the entire school board was unresponsive, just (ironically) the members who voted to ban the film.

The second letter regarding the egregious "one-sided" educational situation that is "Forest Discovery Days" was sent to the entire School Board. No response as of yet; however, I would assume that Trustees Lemm, Hirning, John and Sadler will take this matter up immediately.

After all, over 500 MCPS students every year are subjected to a full day of "one-sided/balance lacking" perspectives coming from Smurfit-Stone, Plum Creek and Roseburg Forest Products.

Also, I'd appreciate it if the title of this little post could be changed....maybe to something like "MCPS: Forest Discovery Days Lacks Balance, Other Views and Therefore Should be Banned." That's the real issue here...it's not me writing letters. Thanks!

I try to avoid getting in the habit of posting other folks' email addresses, just as a courtesy, so I simplified that part.

As for changing the headline, I try to not be in the habit of making changes to posts. You're right, the headline isn't the news. Strangely, that's rarely how I think of headlines on my posts.

Hey Matt, (0.00 / 0)
Thanks for stirring things up with these letters! Great writeup in the Missoulian today:

"I guess my point is that if they have decided that they are going to micromanage what teachers teach in the classroom and what tools they use to accomplish that teaching, then they should be ready to micromanage every single issue," Koehler said in a subsequent interview...

"They need to decide how far they are going to intrude into the classroom," Koehler said.

It's easy enough to imagine classroom intrusions made on philosophical, religious or political grounds. Evangelical Christians have already battled school boards over evolution, and Koehler said he'd happily entertain a debate on military recruitment in the high schools.

"Why wouldn't we want to have the Jeannette Rankin Peace Center there?" he asked. "But I don't think we need to do any of that. I think we can trust that our kids, by the time they get to high school, are smart enough to sort through these issues without us micromanaging them."
