Why is Dennis Rehberg Having Lunch with a Dude with Apparent Neo-Confederate Sympathies?

by: Matt Singer

Thu Feb 26, 2009 at 12:30:51 PM MST

Fresh from @dennyrehberg's twitter feed:
At lunch with Thomas E. Woods Jr. New Yorks (sic) Times bestselling author.
From Woods' Wikipedia page:
He served as a history department faculty member at Suffolk County Community College in New York until 2006, and is now resident scholar and senior faculty member of the Ludwig von Mises Institute (LvMI), as well as a member of the editorial board for the institute's Journal of Libertarian Studies.[2] He is also an associate scholar of the Abbeville Institute.

Woods was present at the founding of the League of the South,[3] and has contributed to its newsletter.[4] His past membership in the group has generated criticism,[5] but Woods asserts his involvement was limited.

The League of the South seeks "a free and independent Southern republic" comprised of the states of the Confederacy. The Ludwig von Mises Institute came under criticism from Reason Magazine (a respectable libertarian publication) for issues relating to race. The Abbeville Institute is named for the birthplace of the Confederacy.

So why is Rep. Rehberg meeting with this guy?

Much less bragging about it on Twitter?

I think we should ban (0.00 / 0)
Certain types of groups and thoughts.

Blacklist even.

Where do I call for banning anyone or anything? (0.00 / 0)
I'm just wondering why Rehberg thinks this is a meeting worth hamming up?

What do you think of the Confederacy, Sydney? Was it teh awesome?

When you come down on the guy (0.00 / 0)
for simply EATING with someone with LIMITED involvement in a group who wants the south to leave the union, it's gotta be nitpicking.

And really, it's part and parcel of the whole thought control and PC crap that is becoming rampant across the Nation.

You could just call it "palling around" with separatists (0.00 / 0)

Sorry his involvement is limited in one group (0.00 / 0)
That's why I talked about his involvement with three groups with sketchy racial and secessionist backgrounds.

You are using whatever ammo you have (0.00 / 0)
At this point in your attempts to paint Denney as EVEEEL.  I get it.  Propaganda works which is why all successful politickers use it.

Fallacious logic (0.00 / 0)
There's a difference between banning thoughts or groups and expecting them to take responsibility for their actions & beliefs.

Does a neo-nazi have a right to move into a predominantly Jewsish neighborhood and hang a swastika on their property. Yes?

Should they expect a warm welcome? No.

Should their friends expect a warm welcome? No.

Mature adults take personal responsibility for the actions, beliefs, and associations that this country allows they to freely engage in.

Enough of this red herring fallacy; no one is arguing banning anything.

Rehberg Lunching with Traitors? (0.00 / 0)
When Rep. Rehberg's lunch buddy Thomas E. Woods was at the founding meeting of the League of the South they drew up the principles below.

There should be a high bar for incrimination by association, but Rep. Rehberg's chum ostensibly believes that America "occupies the South", which must "throw off the yoke of imperial oppression" in order to achieve "secession and subsequent independence of the Southern States from this forced union and the formation of a Southern republic."

That's fucked up.

Since Rehberg represents a state on the northern border of the US, I presume he's either negotiating a non-aggression past with our soon to be independent "culturally sublime" neighbors to the South, or perhaps Rehberg is reviving a House Un-American Activities Committee. After all, the League of the South sounds like a bunch of borderline Timothy McVeigh's dressed up like Rhett Butler.

Selected League of the South Principles
(Emphasis added)

I. Cultural Independence
"...we stand for our own sublime cultural inheritance and seek to separate ourselves from the cultural rot that is American culture."

II. Social Independence
... American society today is egalitarian and Marxist and is devoid of any grace or charm.

Is structured upon the Biblical notion of hierarchy. ...husbands are the heads of their families;...employers rank above their employees...

...righteous application of justice by ecclesiastical and civil authorities.

III. Economic Independence
...monetary system where the currency is fully backed by gold and silver bullion.

Abolishes all forms of the "income tax"...

...no central banking system.

Abolished all taxes on real property...

IV. Political Independence
...Another certainty is that the American Empire that now occupies the South believes in none of the aforementioned ideals and principles. To be truly free and self- governing, the South must throw off the yoke of imperial oppression. Therefore, The League of the South advocates the secession and subsequent independence of the Southern States from this forced union and the formation of a Southern republic.

Acknowledges that the individual States have constitutional rights of nullification, interposition, and secession.

...use of State Militias in place of maintaining large, standing armies.

Does not infringe upon the individual or collective right to purchase and own firearms of any type suitable for self-defense.

Restricts the right to vote solely to those who are recognized as citizens of one of the member States of the confederation.

Since when did the Left care about Treason?

Oh, wait.  Precisely the moment when they began controlling all the branches of government.  DUH.

Why don't you explain just how the "Left" (0.00 / 0)
controls the Judicial branch?

Oh, that's right. You're used to the last eight years. That's the legacy of the Bush administration where U.S. attorneys were subjected to ideological litmus and loyalty tests in order to keep their jobs.

Why is Dopey Rehburp lunching with a racist? (0.00 / 0)
Easy answer.  For the EXACT same reason that ex. Sen. Corndog Buns purposely let slip the most vile racist epithets with alacrity, including the word n*gger to the editor of the Bozeman Chronicle.  It sends a not-so-subtle message to the racists around the country that in Montana, there are  STILL some politicos who sympathize with their racist beliefs.  And that's real sick and unAmerican, but it DOES translate into a few extra votes.  Do the math.  Most statewide elections are decided by fewer than four thousand votes.  If Dopey can convince even a small percentage of race haters that Montana is a good fit for them, he's done good.  And let's face it, the Repubbie party has become the party of racial hatred.  I'd wager money that Dopey PURPOSELY manufactured this situation specifically to bolster his status on the rightwing hate sites.  And it's working.  Hell, your post will probably be appearing soon all OVER the racist net.  Score one for Dopey.  It's probably best to not get to upset with Dopey's confederate pals.  That's what he wants.  It's best to let Dopey show his white supremacy the old fashioned way, with his intellect.  And we ALL know that THAT ain't gonna happen any time soon!

p.s. (0.00 / 0)
My other thought was that maybe Woods offered Dopey an honorary commission in the neo-confederate army! You know how them southerners are always granting themselves military rank. You know, kinda like Col. Saunders and his Chicken Brigade! Well, how bout Col. Dopey and the First Irregular Goat Brigade!  I'll bet Col. Dopey would cut a fine figure of an officer in his uniform and trusty wooly mount!  Could there be a statue not too far off in the future, maybe next to another civil war vet, Gov. Meagher???  I wonder, would we have to salute Col. Dopey??

Well, that kills tweeting for Denny (0.00 / 0)

I think that this would be a wonderful....... (0.00 / 0)
question for Dopey Rehburp if he ever agrees to a debate in the coming election.  Someone needs to ask Dopey just why he was palin' around with a head racist.  I'd be interested to hear his answer.
