What are Senate Republicans Thinking?

by: Matt Singer

Mon Apr 06, 2009 at 16:50:16 PM MST

Yargh. This is the fight that won't end. Senate Republicans just cut CHIP again. It's like they really don't give a damn about either little kids getting health insurance or voters getting what they voted for.

One Republican has broken ranks -- John Brueggeman -- but the rest are standing firm so far.

What is strange is who is leading this effort -- Senator Dave Lewis. Dave Lewis has always struck me (from afar) as a reasonable guy. He's digging in hard on this fight, though. It's almost like he just wants to write the negative mail pieces.

I've heard that about Lewis too... (0.00 / 0)
that "he's a reasonable guy."

But my dealings with him on his bizarre plan in SB 34 to give MT counties the right to declare federal National Forest lands in our state "decayed" so MT counties could march in and start logging gave me a distinctly different impression.

He didn't want to talk with the USFS's leading home protection expert. Strange, don't you think if his bill was truly about keeping people safe from wildfire?  He didn't want to listen to science or the facts concerning timber sale lawsuits? Strange, don't you think if you're going to blame everything on a handful of lawsuits from enviros?

Nope, he just wanted to openly violate the US Constitution and keep the MT lumber industry running on illegally cut wood from national forests! Luckily, SB 34 was killed in a house committee after passing out of the Senate 42-7.

I have determined that this year... (0.00 / 0)
the Senate is just the crazy chamber. The house passed a modest 3% increase in per-pupil entitlements for public schools, the Senate committee cut that to 1%. The senate has attacked  children's health care but wants to free up regulations for horse slaughter. These people are not right in the head. If Democrats let this go during the next election... if we do not tie every republican candidate and incumbent to these absolute loons, then we need to give up and go live in the woods smoking our weed, wearing mumus and living our hippie-dippy lifestyle... because that is what we will be if we let these people keep coming to power.
