Insurance Companies Break Promise in Less than 72 Hours...

by: Matt Singer

Fri May 15, 2009 at 09:16:54 AM MST

It looks like America's insurance companies, hospitals, and device manufacturers have a pre-existing condition called being dishonest assholes:
Just four days after standing next to President Obama and declaring their commitment to control health care costs to the tune of $2 trillion over 10 years, the insurance industry, drug and medical device makers, and hospital groups are backing off their promise...
The initial promises here were so newsworthy precisely because of the surprise that these industries would acknowledge that serious costs need to be contained, but it seems that the will to actually do so is extremely limited:
"There's been a lot of misunderstanding that has caused a lot of consternation among our members," said Richard J. Umbdenstock, the president of the American Hospital Association. "I've spent the better part of the last three days trying to deal with it."
Poor Mr. Umbdenstock. He's had to spend three days trying to deal with hospitals concerned about cutting health care inflation by 1.5%. How about he talks to the people who are trying to deal with those bills or the workers being laid off losing their insurance?

I'm all for working with anyone willing to come to the table, but working with people who will double-cross you is a fool's errand. These assholes deserve to be slapped down. You don't just go to the White House and hold a press conference to lie to the President and the American people without consequences.

Fool me once...

Update -- Subject line corrected. It was more like 72 hours than 24. My bad. Just pissed.

Hmmm (1.00 / 5)

Matt, has it ocurred to you that His Worship, The Messiah, The Protector of The Poor, President Obama might have embellished the 'success' of this meeting just a little bit?

The confab at the White House wasn't a meeting, it was a press conference (0.00 / 0)
The same folks retracting their promises today made them in public themselves.

Honestly, Eric, learn how to read.

Think Max will slap them down, or slap them five? A million bucks goes a long way with a whore. (1.33 / 3)

Single payer now! (0.00 / 0)
And these are the same insuranace companies that are supposed to help "reform" health care in America?

maybe this will free up... (0.00 / 0)

...that'd be the writer for this article eh... has an Oh MY GAWD moment but still can't get a clue as evidenced by his half witted apology ...
It's an epiphthany all right it just doesn't register into Single Payer... he's still betting on the pimps and whores of the Insurance Industry et al.

VERY Disingenuous - to be sure.

Matt is all about the Profit laden Stockholders at his table - didn't mention a thing about SINGLE PAYER at the Table. Makes me think the author of this trite article is holding stock? and is now really miffed that they defaulted on their bet awwwwww wah wah wah ...

YOU REAP WHAT YOU BET ON.

ps: there's a big difference between REFORM and reforming.

You're accusing Singer of getting involved in the debate over Baucus' health proposal...because he has financial interest in it?

Er...hold on...here it comes...BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

That's the funniest thing I've heard in months!

Enough already (0.00 / 0)
I realize that Singer has a vested interest in the 'bidness' that single payer advocacy might bring to Forward Montana but at least the dude shouldn't misrepresent the truth.

Nancy-Ann DeParle, director of the White House Office of Health Reform, said "the president misspoke" on Monday and again on Wednesday when he described the industry's commitment in similar terms. After providing that account, Ms. DeParle called back about an hour later on Thursday and said: "I don't think the president misspoke. His remarks correctly and accurately described the industry's commitment."

So, Ms. DeParle realized, after word got to the White House progressive political operatives and Journolist members, that they could create a firestorm of comment and fake outrage that these terrible and nasty business people are double-crossing the anointed one, creating a firestorm of populist backlash against the industry, so she claims the president "misspoke." Uh-huh!

Don't believe me? Check out the impartial Memeorandum website for links to this story.

If only what Rich said were true...

And, er, btw, what "bidness" does single-payer bring to Fwd MT? It's, uh, you know, a nonprofit. That's, well, not involved in providing health care or health care insurance. You do know that...right?

And another thing! If you're denying the inherent nastiness of the insurance industry, I suggest you get off your mom's policy and get one of your own...

If only what Rich said were true...

It is...for reference refer to this: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05...

And, er, btw, what "bidness" does single-payer bring to Fwd MT? It's, uh, you know, a nonprofit. That's, well, not involved in providing health care or health care insurance. You do know that...right?

Sure I do...and you know quite well that Singer has consistently refused to release Forward Montana's books for public scrutiny. Forward Montana might not be "providing health care of health care insurance" to fellow Montanans, of which you're not one BTW, but I'm sure they have no problem accepting contributions from the various progressive organizations and influence peddlers WHO DO have a vested stake in the issue.

And another thing! If you're denying the inherent nastiness of the insurance industry, I suggest you get off your mom's policy and get one of your own...

Umm, I'm not on my "mom's policy." I work full-time for a living and am one of the millions of Americans satisfied with my coverage. It could always be better (what couldn't?) but I don't expect others to do for me that for which I can do for myself. Anywhoo, how's that insurance policy that your wife carries on you and the kids?

Defending Singer... (0.00 / 0)
Okay, folks. Let's get some things straight. Matt Singer is not advocating for health care reform for any financial benefit. Okay? Nor is he Baucus' stooge, an insurance industry stooge, or working for George Soros.

The dude's explained a half dozen times why he's supporting the current health reform proposals. Let's assume the reasons he gives us are the reasons that motivate him, okay? If you don't like his stance, or Baucus', debate the issue on the merits of the argument. Pls. avoid character assassination.

That is all. Carry on.

Matt, do you know if SEIU has issued a statement about thier coalition partner's betrayal? (0.00 / 0)
They were present at the news conference and part of the group making the announcement.

I'm wondering if they have anything to say about it or are they keeping quiet?

Thanks for any info you have.
