Jacob Eaton is back. This has already been reported elsewhere, but typically with little mention of Jake's disastrous involvement in the GOP's ill-fated voter suppression scheme (an effort that cost Eaton his job and possibly Brad Johnson his position as well).
Eaton's return to realm of Montana politics raises more than a handful of question. When he disappeared from the scene last fall, it was under the guise of a sudden opportunity in the financial sector (experiencing such rapid growth at the time) with a firm in Wisconsin, although he apparently continued to live in Montana. If anything has ever smelled so obviously of wingnut welfare, it had to be this gig.
Six months later, they've brushed him off and brought him back. What's the reason? Maybe that financial sector gig wasn't as great as Jake anticipated. Maybe it never really existed. Maybe a Wisconsin-based financial services firm decided it really didn't need a Montana-based political hack on its payroll.
Who knows? I don't.
What I do know is that Montanans should expect a lot of more wacky dishonesty out of Jake Eaton's mouth over the next few months.
I also know that Eaton's involvement points even more to Congressman Rehberg being the central opponent of healthcare reform in Montana. Of course, his office still won't come clean on that. But you don't sit in on strategy sessions, read off the messaging memos, and have your own personal (though less talented) Karl Rove running the ground game if you're interested in playing ball on reform.
