TODAY: Sen. Elliott Cranks Up Heat On Baucus On Trade

by: davidsirota

Fri Feb 23, 2007 at 07:15:45 AM MST

( - promoted by Matt Singer)

I'm headed up to the Capitol here in Helena this morning for a hearing on a resolution by State Sen. Jim Elliott (D) demanding that Montana's congressional delegation oppose President Bush's efforts to reauthorize "fast track" authority - the authority that lets presidents ram lobbyist-written trade deals through Congress. This resolution is particularly significant because Montana Sen. Max Baucus (D), as chair of the Finance Committee, is in a position to decide what happens to "fast track" in Congress. You may recall that in 2005, the legislature resoundingly passed a similar resolution against CAFTA, sponsored by Elliott and then State Senate President Jon Tester (who, as a U.S. Senator today, continues to make strong statements against our current unfair trade policy).

Baucus has said he wants to help Bush reauthorize "fast track" - a declaration that may make K Street happy, but is bad news for Montana small businesses, farmers and workers. Hopefully, this resolution will make him think twice. Stay tuned.

UPDATE: The Senate Labor Committee passed Elliott's resolution by a strong bipartisan vote of 9-2. Now the bill heads to the Senate floor.

I'm sorry, (0.00 / 0)
but I must interject.  WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH LOONY COONEY?!  Why is it that Loony Cooney, a professional politician if there ever WAS one, now feels that he needs to make a seatbelt violation a primary offense?!  Look, cops  don't NEED another excuse to stop motorists.  PERIOD!  Cops are NOT necessarily your friends!  This simply  allows them another way to harass law abiding people.  Why  can't Looney  just mind his own business?!  And the arguments I've heard from some of the Dems is pathetic.  No WONDER so many people look to the rightwing wackjobs for leadership on issues like this.  "If it saves even one life it's worth it", some Dem dumbdumb.  NO IT'S NOT!  Get real!  People die in wrecks.  Get over it!  If you want to wear the damn belt, DO IT!  But don't give the cops another reason to stop, harass, intimidate, and take money from people!  Let me offer up a nice example of cop behavior.  Here in GF, because of supposed problems in the city schools, the school board decided that it would be a great idea to put cops in the schools.  Well, what happened.  IMMEDIATELY SOME COPS GOT CAUGHT TRYING  TO HIT ON HIGHSCHOOL  GIRLS!  Yeah, great idea putting slimeball cops in schools!  If the idiots on the school boards really want a cop in school, then they should have sent a good, qualified teacher to the MLEA Academy, make them an law enforcement officer, and give them the power to arrest.  NOT put some uneducated moron off the street into the schools!  The cops  don't NEED any more excuses to stop a citizen.  They already have enough.  If Loony Cooney wants to live  in a nanny  state, let him go to Russia!
p.s.  I'm sorry to see that the rightwing wacks backed off on  their bill which would have allowed a person to show a gun if someone was attempting to committ a crime on their person.  Gutless wonders.  I'm with the NRA on this one.

Me too (0.00 / 0)
I don't really think the Democrats are viciously trying to give the cops "Big Brother" status. And it has nothing to do with free will or the Democrats taking it away. Take this scenerio: I'm a fairly hefty fellow, and let's say I'm driving down the highway with my daughter who is big enough and old enough to sit in the front without a child safety seat. I see a deer, and I over correct. We tumble. Now before we begin the tumble notice that she, like a good girl, is wearing her seatbelt whilst I am not. I get tossed around the vehicle and slam into her once or twice. Certainly enough to kill her. Now if I had been wearing my seatbelt I might not have killed, and perhaps one or both of us could have servived.

That's what this is about. It's not about taking away your rights. It's about trying to keep people safe. I'm glad you brought up the REpublicans taking leadership on this issue. You have no idea the ground they make by trying to kill this Brave New World-esque law (Note my sarcasm). I don't think a lot of people care about this kind of thing, because they don't talk about it. What they care about is what they are told to fear. And that is what the Republicans are good. This countries fear leads us to war, and hatred towards our fellow Americans. This is where it starts.

This are just my humble opinions. I don't see a problem with wearing a seatbelt. Just like I don't see a problem with being licensed to drive, or having to wear clothing in public.

Well, OK then. (0.00 / 0)
Mathello, why don't you just wear your seatbelt then?  We don't need to legislate for stupidity.(mine)  I choose not to wear mine while I drive the backroads to the store, I feel I shouldn't be force to.  That's all.

And I understand that (0.00 / 0)
but my point was that there are some things that citizens are forced to do not only to protect themselves, but to protect others as well. I know it's ridiculous to say that there should be laws to protect us from ourselves, but its the same reason why we have drunk driving laws. Its to protect ourselves, and the people around us.

ummm... Larry, et al? (0.00 / 0)
What does your little tirade about seatbelts have to do at all with what this post is about (ie. fast track trade authority)? Hell, the post is barely about the Montana legislature. Down, boys, and chill!
Now, if you do wnat to chat seat belts, I included a tirade on the subject in my "week in review" post over at my site The Fighting Liberal. Oh, but if you go, no referring to the President of the Senate as "looney Cooney",  I don't even refer to the speaker as "Sideshow Sayles" even though that is what he is. Let us show some respect.

Alex, (0.00 / 0)
sorry to offend.  Guess I don't share the respect that you have for titles.  Guess that I think that legislators are no better than anyone else.  Guess that I'm a little older than you and have earned my cynicism.  And I guess that I'm DAMN tired of Dems trying to play nanny state!  This sort of crappola plays right into the rightwingers' hands.  I've seen TOO much of it over the years.  There was a time that Democrats stood for the working man and underclass.  PERIOD!  Then along came the do-gooders, and the next thing you know, the Dems were the party of homos, wierdos, anti-guns, anti-business etc. etc.!  Now, don't get me wrong.  I'm all for homosexual rights.  But by GOD it isn't the ONLY thing that Democrats should be noted for!  And that's what happens each time someone like cooney introduces nanny state bills. It reinforces the idea that Dems are out of touch with mainstream working men values. And the reason that I posted it here is because this thread wasn't gettin' much action.  I'll head over to yours and check it out.

Thanks to Senator Elliott (0.00 / 0)
He's a real treasure.  Smart guy with a lot of guts.
The President should not have fast track anything. Congress must take back its power to work on trade plicies which are seriously out of wack.
