Western States Fight Warming (Hopefully, Montana Joins Soon)

by: Matt Singer

Mon Feb 26, 2007 at 13:45:36 PM MST

USA Today is reporting that five Western states (AZ, CA, NM, OR, and WA) are banding together to launch a regional cap-and-trade initiative to fight global warming. This is the sort of thing that (I think) Montana should do. If we can reach a regional agreement and cap-and-trade is the method, it does not put Montana at a competitive disadvantage economically (put that in your pipe and smoke it, develop-at-any-cost crowd) and it does take a meaningful step forward toward reducing greenhouse gases.

Cap-and-trade isn't idea, but, structured properly, it may actually be preferable to a mediocre cap. And, let's face it, it is a significant step forward from the status quo.

Montana Legislature takes on global warming (0.00 / 0)
The Legislature will hear HB 753, Hands, D-Missoula, on March 9th in House Natural Resources.  It's modeled after California's cap-and-trade law, and would be a major step in the right direction.

The Senate passed several pro-active measures.  They asked the Feds to pass a carbon cap with SJ 20 this morning.  They've passed SB 449 requiring the State fleet of vehicles to meet fuel efficiency standards.  They passed SB 432, a biodiesel standard, and they passed SB 218 which asks the Department of Environmental Quality to define and make rules on carbon sequestration.
