A little of the ol' "Okie Talk"

by: Jay Stevens

Wed Aug 12, 2009 at 09:13:38 AM MST

As JC pointed out, President Obama will be at the Bozeman airport on Friday for a public town hall meeting open to the public, and that Jake Eaton et al will be on hand to disrupt things.

I'm betting this woman will be there:

Parading with Bitterroot Valley Republican groups in her Hummer, Cathy Kulonis said she was exercising her First Amendment rights Saturday when she hoisted a sign reading "No Mo Bro" during Creamery Picnic festivities here.

In response to angry requests to remove the sign, and contentions that it carried unsavory racial overtones regarding President Barack Obama, Kulonis held her ground, referring to those who complained as "red-faced maniacs" and "liberal extremists."

When the parade committee chairman requested that she remove her sign, she once again stood fast and refused to put it away.

She claims the sign was just "Okie talk."

"This issue is not about racism," Kulonis wrote in an e-mail to the Ravalli Republic. "It is not even about me. It is about control. A useless effort by the left to silence me."

"No one intimidates me," she continued. "I will not bow to or obey the pc police. I am afraid of no one. I was born for a time as this. Opinions and names do not change the facts or who I am. I say, 'Watch this Patriot Act!' "

Kulonis said it doesn't bother her that some interpreted her sign as racist.

"I can't help what people think and someone being offended is not my responsibility," she said. "Everything I did, I did with my own kind heart."

Racist, paranoid, self-obsessed, and oblivious: these are the people we're dealing with...

Update: This isn't the first time LiTW has mentioned Kulonis. The "Okie talker" got into a little set-to outside an abortion clinic when she blocked the sidewalk in front of the clinic. That little incident led to the abusurdist SB 497, a bill that made it a crime to "obstruct" anti-abortion demonstrations at clinics.

Steve M has more on Kulonis' extremist activities.

I really, really wanted to see what this pathetic creature LOOKED like.  Did she say that she was from Oklahoma?  My guess is that she is.  The wacks have been recruiting these inbreds for a long time to make Montana the new "white homeland".  Ol' Sen. Cornhole Buns used to purposely drop racist remarks every chance he got to remind the racists out there that in Montana they would be welcomed.  It's the best recruiting tool that the Mt. Pubbies have.  Racism, pure and simple, as simple as this Okie woman.

Racist heart of Kulonis (0.00 / 0)
This woman should be ashamed of herself.  Racism needs to cease.  I have no problem with her holding conservative views, but when she stoops to parading about with signs obviously racist in meaning and intent, she should be ostracized by even conservative bystanders.  There is no place for a person like her who bases her opinions on the color of another person's skin.  Calling herself an "Okie" is just being insulting to people from Oklahoma, and other southerners.

Distraction (0.00 / 0)
"Racist, paranoid, self-obsessed, and oblivious: these are the people we're dealing with..."

Actually painting a few vocal people, like Hillary Clinton (see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v... as racists, brown-shirts, nazis, kluckers, terrorists, dolts, or insurance company tools are a distraction from the issues. It seems to betray a desperation that the Salesman in Chief just can't convince the public to buy.  So, change the subject, demonize protesters, etc.  All it's doing is upsetting more people when all the President has to say is "Trust me."

Here's a novel idea:  Go back and craft a better product that sells itself.

The LAT had a good column:  http://latimesblogs.latimes.co...

[ Parent ]
So, what does Hillary Clinton (0.00 / 0)
have to do with any of this?

She's not president--for which many of us are very grateful.

[ Parent ]
Hillary: (0.00 / 0)
"I'm sick and tired of people who say that if you debate and disagree with this administration, somehow you're not patriotic. We need to stand up and say we're Americans, and we have the right to debate and disagree with any administration."

Add to her "not patriotic" all of the other epithets hurled at protesters by the politicos that can't make the sale. Pure desperation.

[ Parent ]
So... what, you think the Teabaggers (0.00 / 0)
should be driving the dialog and debate right now?

I'd call that pretty desperate for republicans to have to stoop that low.

[ Parent ]
Teabagger label (0.00 / 0)
doesn't fit the broad range of protesters.

Obama really put his foot in it by claiming the AARP was on board and then the AARP slapping him down and setting him straight.  AARP members are making their concerns and objections heard to their leadership.  That's what happened here.  AARP backing away from Obama is a sign of real trouble. His "health insurance" reform dream is not shared by these people especially after he has made a deal with Big Pharma on Medicare drug pricing. These silver hairs (teabaggers to you) are catching on to the Prez's duplicity as he exhibited in NH.

[ Parent ]
Don't conflate "silver hairs" with teabaggers (0.00 / 0)
in my mind, for me. I'm not so simplistic to think that AARP members are largely represented in AARP. Conversely, I heard the head of the AARP distance the group from the teabaggers.

You're making much more out of a very complex negotiating process. And once again, you're playing "gotcha plitics." Go read this blurb from Media Matters, "Tapper, Hemmer too busy playing gotcha on Obama's AARP comments to report relevant facts" about it.

Yawn...

[ Parent ]
Craig, get off it (0.00 / 0)
SOME in the AARP are not happy about health care reform.  There are those who believe that the larger pool of customers will dilute their coverage.  That isn't supported by any pending legislation, but some people just love the fear. Some don't want others to have the same coverage they have ... I have no idea why.  It makes no sense, but often people don't. Some, about 25%, think they will find themselves standing before death panels.  That's nothing more than fucking idiotic.

The AARP is on board with health care reform, as an organization.  They have disagreed with what they think President Obama is proposing, even though he hasn't proposed jack-shit.  That would mean, quite rightly, that they disagree with the FUD being presented by the right as if it is truth.

Kindly show me where I am wrong.

[ Parent ]
To start with (0.00 / 0)
In Obama's own words it's no longer about healthcare reform but health insurance reform.  A much different animal. The shifting target, selling out to Big Pharma, outright duplicity, and parsing of intent have the silver hairs upset. Just my observation.

[ Parent ]
I know you've read my explaination of this topic (0.00 / 0)
Craig, there is no difference at all between "health care reform" and "health Insurance reform".  It's the same damned thing.  You on the right have a vested interest in portraying them as separate.  I don't, and no rational person should.

The only thing standing in the way of people getting the best health care available in the free-world is the insurance to pay for it.  Reform insurance, and you have reformed health care.  There is no "different animal" of which you write.  I've explained this clearly before.

The "silver hairs", as you oh so politely call them, are upset because many of them think that they will get screwed.  You and Glenn Beck and others have consistently failed to show how.  But damned if you don't try anyway.  Your observation is selective.  The shifting target is, as Mark T aptly puts it, agitprop.  It isn't real.  It's FUD.  Please, show us something that isn't FUD.

Wulfgar (0.00 / 0)
I thought you would get a laugh from the Black Knight skit.

As to my opinion about the silver hairs, I have said more than once I believe they have a major beef over Obama making a deal with Big Pharma.

Take care.  I gotta go.

[ Parent ]
Actually, (0.00 / 0)
I did enjoy that.  Thanks, man.

[ Parent ]
AARP (0.00 / 0)
a fraud...they are essentially a subsidiary of United Health...they serve one purpose...sell more insurance to seniors...ahhh....and didn't the AARP favor the whole Medicare D and prescription drug fiasco of the early Bush days?

Health care reform vs. health insurance reform...same difference..

I suggest Mr. Moore spend a few minutes and replay Obama's speeches on health care....going back to say October 2008...and right up until now...the target hasn't moved...but hey, if you want to believe that I suppose you'll believe old folks will be euthanized and turned into Soylent Green...

[ Parent ]
Obama's pivot (0.00 / 0)
has been observed by many including Real Clear Politics and Politico.  You will find analysis there for some of the reasons. And NO they are not the same thing.  Health insurance reform is about financing.  Healthcare reform is much broader and includes the delivery/treatment process.

As to demonizing AARP, as you have done, I don't think Obama will touch that with a 1000 ft. pole.  The reasons are obvious.

[ Parent ]
And Sage... (0.00 / 0)
Here is another one of Obama's pivots (lies?) as captured by Politifact:  http://politifact.com/truth-o-...

No wonder more and more silver hairs are distrusting his spiel.

[ Parent ]
Mr. Moore (0.00 / 0)
I use to believe in a god...now I don't...have I lied, made a "pivot", gotten more evidence to base my opinion on, changed my mind, or, given the current context of my life, decided there is no god?

So you think Obama has lied? He was a proponent of single payer 6 years ago and today he is not sure it will work?

Interesting...is this lie right up there with the Bush lie that got us into the Iraq war?

[ Parent ]
Sage, there is a large difference (0.00 / 0)
Go back and read Politifacts analysis where the rate Obama's "artful" answer on single-payer as FALSE.

[ Parent ]
You are correct (0.00 / 0)
Bush's lie was pre meditation to murder...

Obama's "pivot" is in response to a changing political scene...and the final outcome has not been determined yet...the final health care reform bill is far from being written...

[ Parent ]
Sage, I know I am (0.00 / 0)
The "Yeah...but, but Bush!" argument is so compelling when discussing Obama, his presidency, and his promises.

Now, Sirota points to Obama's fraud on single-payer: http://www.alternet.org/health...

[ Parent ]
??? (3.00 / 1)
...but...but...

Okay. It's readily apparent that most of the vocal opposition to the health care plan is manufactured. They're opposed to a bill or reform that doesn't exist, except in the twisted mind of the Glenn Becks of the world. (Assuming, of course, he believes what he's saying.)

So you say they should craft "a better product" to ease the anger?

Let's be honest here. If Obama somehow acquired enough Unicorn Pellets to rub on the wounds of all the sick people in the country, thereby curing them with the unicorn's magic properties, there'd still be Tea Baggers outside the clinics, protesting.

No matter what Obama or the Democrats propose, there'll be opposition. It's not about policy, this is politics.

And I think it's fair to point out the tactics and knowledge and skewed values that many of these people have, otherwise the media will try to paint this as some kind of inspired grassroots movement, when it's actually a bunch of uninformed thugs...

[ Parent ]
It's not about policy, this is politics. (0.00 / 0)
Agreed that was want Obama was trying to do by saying AARP had endorsed the bill and was on board.

Then the AARP comes and says not true.

So what are people to believe regarding "Trust Me!" coming from a President that speaks with a forked tongue?  Emotion is filling the vacuum of substance.  Fear is fueling the fire.

[ Parent ]
Please deal with the memo on busting up town meetings ... (0.00 / 0)
Please deal with people being bussed in and given talking points, being advised to spread out in front of the room and yell to make it seem like they are a majority. Please tell me why these are not uninfomred thugs.

Please don't give us a YouTube that shows that Obama once cursed at his sister or is Kenyan. Please don't talk about Hillary Clinton. Please deal specifically with the points I raise. Please don't deflect. Please don't talk about anything else until you talk about the things I mentioned.

And please don't tell me that being rude, obnoxious, loud and bullying is freedom of speech. Try a different angle.

[ Parent ]
Prove your claim, that ALL these people are organized thugs. (0.00 / 0)
Then watch the Utube of Hillary defending the right to question the administration.

[ Parent ]
You know, Craig, (0.00 / 0)
Your complaint might actually make some sense if anybody here had actually claimed that:

ALL these people are organized thugs.

Embrace the obvious.  No one did claim that.

[ Parent ]
Go Back??? (0.00 / 0)
Move it along, I say. Slowing down just gives the republican whackos more time to make up more lies and generate more press, and confuse more people. Slowing down and re-dos is a recipe for failure.

The only way that scenario could have been avoided would have been for the republicans to initiate health care reform while they had control of D.C. Didn't happen then, won't happen next time they're in control, either.

And there is no formula coming out of a dem controlled Congress that will please a teabagger. The goal is to get a political victory, discredit Obama as much as they can, and kill reform. Period. No matter what the result of reform efforts would be.

Teabaggers have shown themselves to be capable of taking language in legislation and twist it in whatever illogical and inconceivable way they can in order to get the effect they desire.

Dems could take a total republican written bill at this point in time, and put it on Obama's desk, and the baggers would still be acting like they are and try to kill it. No amount of slowing down, and attempts to "craft a better product" is going to change any of that.

"How To Fight Heathcare Fearmongers and Demagogues" by Robert Reich:

Why are these meetings brimming with so much anger? Because Republican Astroturfers have joined the same old right-wing broadcast demagogues that have been spewing hate and fear for years, to create a tempest.

But why are they getting away with it? Why aren't progressives -- indeed, why aren't ordinary citizens -- taking the meetings back?

Mainly because there's still no healthcare plan. All we have are some initial markups from several congressional committees, which differ from one another in significant ways. The White House's is waiting to see what emerges from the House and Senate before insisting on what it wants, maybe in conference committee.

But that's the problem: It's always easier to stir up fear and anger against something that's amorphous than to stir up enthusiasm for it...

Now's the time for specifics. It's impossible to fight fearmongering lies with nothing but positive principles. [emphasis added]

I think we can lay the blame for this august recess antics squarely on Baucus' shoulders for all of his foot dragging. Of course, he'll most likely put more stock in their protestations than any coming from single payers. What with his butt buddy right hand man Grassley endorsing the "Death Panel" lies, I'm sure that means more to him than any sensible readings of the bill:

"You have every right to fear. You shouldn't have counseling at the end of life."

Bipartisanship is dead in DC. Dems should just go it alone. They'll be despised for anything and everything they do by republicans and their teabagging minions. They might as well make it worth their (and our) while.

[ Parent ]
I don't don't stand for racism. If you want to divert my attention from it, good luck. (1.00 / 1)
I will be standing arm in arm with with my friends, neighbors, and fellow Montanans condemning the cowardly disruptors and the racists and supporting our right to political dialog and free of fear mongering, oppression and racism.

I will be showing up to support my President and my community.

See you there Craig!

[ Parent ]
Steve, how is that possible? (0.00 / 0)
I'm not in Montana at this time.  Please identify the color of your shirt and logo (purple maybe) and what sign you will be holding so that I can see you in the pictures.

How low will they go (0.00 / 0)
Here is big ol' disenfranchise Montana voters Jake Eaton being paid by the Healthcare industry to lie to the public.  I guess that is no different then what he was doing a the executive director of the Republican party, but come on.  He is giong to be sitting out all night to get tickets, because he is getting paid.  Looks like he might need the bro to keep them fun bags in check.
