GOP Mocks Baucus Capitulation

by: Headwaters

Sat Mar 10, 2007 at 17:42:48 PM MST

Sucka Nation:

"The minimum wage-tax relief package was a good early lesson for them as to how things will work," Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said with a chuckle in a recent interview.

The only reason that the term 'tax relief' shows up is because Baucus capitulated before the debate even began, but punking him doesn't stop the GOP from laughing at him. Considering how many times this has happened, is there any chance that Baucus will ever learn?

When? (0.00 / 0)
When was the last time they mocked Baucus? And since you bring it up how many times has this happened?

they mocked him because he didn't completely roll over (0.00 / 0)
During the Bush Administration, the Republicans have mostly only had thanks to give to Baucus. If he would have amended the Minimum Wage increase to be a tax cut without a wage increase then they would have thanked him as well.

The only other time as of late that Baucus didn't capitulate -- Social Security -- I remember lots of mocking and attacks because he didn't realize the looming disaster.

The GOP has played Baucus so well that they have come to expect he will vote like a far right Republican every time they ask him to. In the rare case when he doesn't, they attack and/or mock to get him back in line for the next time they need to whip conservative votes.

Of course, Democrats mock him too. I remember during the 2001 inauguration when Baucus showed up in a cowboy hat and Kerry flipped it off his head. That was funny. Of course it was sad a few days later when Baucus went running to the press to tell everyone he thought Bush would be a great president.

I got that (0.00 / 0)
Sorry I was a little vague. What I was getting at was that I don't think the Republicans all of the sudden figured out a tax cut was available because Max brought it up. It isn't selling the store. If anyone thinks that the Republicans didn't go to Reid and Baucus and said "Tax cut or filibuster" isn't thinking, period.

Max Baucus is a politician, and a damn good one at that. (Please note that I don't think he's the greatest Senator ever to walk the face of the earth) President Bush won Montana by almost 2:1, and he wasn't always an unpopular fellow. Max was up for reelection the following year and, being the politician that he is, he didn't mind kissing a little ass so he wouldn't be targeted.

They're gonna mock anyone who doesn't side with them. That's not a big deal for any Democrat nowadays.

What I was getting at was that I don't think the Republicans all of the sudden figured out a tax cut was available because Max brought it up.

I think what the GOP realized is that they could lean on Max to force tax cuts being added. They knew Max would fold before the cards were even dealt and they were right.

It isn't selling the store.

It is selling out the Minimum Wage. The reason the minimum wage hasn't been increased is because they know they can keep rolling Baucus -- which is because they have a firm grasp on recent history.

This thinking is why Baucus has become such a worthless senator. No matter how conservative or how much he gives they would still have targeted him. Ask Tom Daschle. As Max Cleland. He kissed ass for no reason, it didn't help him, it only hurt us. If they would have run somebody other than a gay hairdresser they might have won.

Max hasn't learned this lesson. That is a major problem. So some reason that isn't based in reality, Max thinks they negotiate in good faith. They don't.

Preachin to the choir (0.00 / 0)
I honestly think he should be primaried to kick him in the ass a little. I'm just pointing out what works for him and how he uses it.

I don't know if he should be primaried (0.00 / 0)
I just don't see it actually working for him. I think the fact his handlers think it works despite all evidence to the contrary is part of the problem.

I'm not a handler (0.00 / 0)
but i'm telling you it works. Max knows how to gut his opponents. He knows what's popular and what isn't. He's not out of touch with Montana, but if he appears to be wishy washy it is only because we are too.

That's a sad AP story (0.00 / 0)
I look forward to 2008 with a solid Liberal Senate and a Democratic President who hopefully will be the economic pragmatic populist, John Edwards.

Why the harsh vibe on Max brah? (0.00 / 0)
Hey brah, why ya gotta sling the harsh tone on Max?

Max is keeping the centrists away from right brah, and when you consider the extra-closeness of elections lately, you would chill with the Max-intensive tude bro.  Max keeps the center solid so the Tester can rock it.

I also read a posting by some shredder named JosephBroseph (see Broseph's recent comment). I'm not sure if I believe this story about Max layin down the shred town at the bowl, but I do think JosephBroseph has a point: we've gotta decide who the best shredder is.  Get these farmers out of office until we can get someone who can shred the gnar like Max allegedly claimed to.

I think Broseph's tude on the "Neocon-Nostril" is the jab brahmon!

It's all about the gnar man, so please lax the tude-sling on the Max brah.

Payce brah.
