With Whom Do You Stand on the Max Baucus Bill

by: Bob Brigham

( - promoted by Jay Stevens)

Unsurprisingly, yesterday Max Baucus unveiled his bill without a single GOP senator in support while having already lost two senate Democrats. JC diaried how HCAN called the bill a failure, but who else is weighing in?
Howard Dean The Baucus bill is the worst piece of healthcare legislation I've seen in 30 years. In fact, it's a $60 billion giveaway to the health insurance industry every year. It was written by healthcare lobbyists, so that's not a surprise. It's an outrage. Business Roundtable Chairman Baucus has put forward a bold framework for health care reform that builds on what works and improves what doesn't. [...] Baucus` bill reflects a step in the right direction on the long road toward health care reform.
Progressive Caucus Co-Chair Raul Grijalva It is telling that Senator Baucus stood alone at today's press conference. There was no "Gang of Six," including the absence of Senator Snowe and no Democrats. Even with huge concessions to the legislation, including no public option, it not so shockingly, has not garnered any visible support. [...] I urge the Senators on the Finance Committee to replace the Baucus plan with legislation that will guarantee that quality, affordable health care that includes a strong public option. Anything less is unacceptable. Denny Rehberg Max's hard work in putting together a bill on such a complex issue is a testament to his genuine desire to do what's best for our country. There's a long road ahead and the devil is always in the details. I'll continue to seek input directly from Montanans as Congress considers the various health care reform proposals.
AFL-CIO Despite months of painful negotiations, the Senate Finance Committee proposal released today absolutely fails to meet the most basic health care needs of working families and it fails to meet the expectations we have set for our nation. [...] We are counting on finance committee Democrats to fix the bill and side with working families, not insurance companies. Chamber of Commerce Chairman Baucus has made a good faith effort to address the concerns of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and we thank him for his inclusive efforts. The business community has strongly advocated for health care reform and the Senate Finance bill is the best effort to date.

feedback for Obama on MaxFail (0.00 / 0)
The Hill:

President Obama's mention of Sen. Max Baucus's healthcare proposal drew boos Thursday at a healthcare rally at the University of Maryland.

By contrast, the left-leaning crowd cheered Obama when he endorseed a public health insurance option, which is considered a core provision for liberal lawmakers but is absent from Baucus's (D-Mont.) proposal.

I guess the President could have had a less polite reaction:

Delegates at the AFL-CIO's convention in Pittsburgh chanted "bullshit" in response to the plan from the Senate Finance Committee's chairman.

Thanks, I just posted the "boos" in a comment on Matt's post. (0.00 / 0)

One reason the Baucus bill is "cheaper" than the House bill is that it has lower subsidies. For illustration, let's assume that the whole $140 billion difference is due to lower subsidies. Relative to the House bill, then, the Baucus bill costs the government $140 billion less; but it costs middle-income people exactly $140 billion more, since they have to buy health insurance. The difference is that in the House bill, the money comes from taxes on the very rich; in the Baucus bill, it comes out of the pockets of the middle-class people who are getting smaller subsidies. Put another way, the Baucus bill is the House bill, plus a $140 billion tax on people making around $40-80,000 per year. That' s not only stupid policy; it's stupid politics

Just curious, (0.00 / 0)
I'm wondering, I know that we can't realistically secede, but could we just secede that dumbass Max??  I mean, the guy is freakin' EMBARASSING!  Hell, we finally dumped EX-sen. cornhole bums, and now we've replaced him in the limelight of stupid senator tricks with Max!  How 'bout if we just wait 'til Max is outta state and secede!  Then, he'd have  to re-apply for citizenship, kinda like ditchin' a nerdy kid when we were little!  I mean, enough is enough!  Max doesn't really even seem to REALIZE that he's a friggin' world class MORON!  Sad, so sad.  Please, someon, ANYone of character and substance, please  declare  NOW to run against this embarassin piece of good old Montana MANURE!
