Banning abortion doesn't reduce abortion rates

by: Jay Stevens

Thu Oct 15, 2009 at 10:37:19 AM MST

What do you know? A recent study shows banning abortion doesn't cut the rate of abortions. It jibes with what we know from other studies of abortion rates in countries where the practiced is outlawed. While abortion bans don't accomplish their primary task, we do, however, know what abortion bans actually do to the rights of women.

On the other hand, making contraceptives widely available actually reduces unwanted pregnancies and, surprisingly enough!, abortions.

The best way to reduce abortions is not to criminalize them, but to provide women with good, affordable, and effective health care that includes neo-natal care and access to contraceptives. And if you really wanted to bite into the numbers, you should consider funding job training programs, beef up college assistance, and provide assistance for daycare. Well funded drug rehabilitation programs would probably help, too.

But we have tax cuts to hand out to major corporations!

The issue that never goes away (0.00 / 0)
Why is it that those who are so strongly opposed to abortion never question why it is that during the period 2001-2007 -- when Republicans were in total control of the federal government and the Supreme Court was heavily weighted on the conservative side -- nothing was done to ban abortions?
The answer, of course, is that the GOP will never let that happen because once the issue goes away, so do millions of reliable GOP votes.

That's true for BOTH sides... (0.00 / 0)
Most reasonable people can agree that the goal of fewer abortions is a laudable goal. One way is to promote the use of pregnancy-prevention birth control methods.  Other ways are to support women who would like to carry a child to term, but seek abortion because they lack financial or social resources. We could also improve support for adoption by extending resources to help women through and beyond that process. A woman who is cornered into having an abortion has no more choice than a woman who lacks access to abortion altogether.

But, sometimes the pro-choice side has their heels dug in, too. I think that many people on both sides make their living off the polarization of this issue...

maybe this is just a partisan hack's knee-jerk response... (0.00 / 0)
...but generally I find those that are pro-choice are also strongly in favor of the kind of reforms that would actually reduce abortions, such as access to contraceptives, realistic sex-ed programs, and good, affordable healthcare for all...

But maybe there's something specific you had in mind? Adoption counseling?

Pro-mother options (0.00 / 0)
We need to expand options for pregnant women - better access to health care (I know a young woman who just went over 3 months without seeing a doctor because she moved between states during her pregnancy - she had a wait period on Medicaid in the new state), supports that help new Moms stay home and breast-feed, better access and support for quality child care so Moms can get back to work or school, and a variety of adoption services with emphasis on support for the biological mother.  I don't want mandated adoption counseling - that's just another hoop for a woman to go through.

If we could create a compassionate society where pregnant women were not chastised for opting to give their child up for adoption - that would help...not sure how we achieve such a progressive ideal.

And, of course... good education and access to pregnancy-prevention birth control for men and women.
