That which lends corruption lighter wings to fly

by: Yellowstone Kelly

Mon Oct 19, 2009 at 08:11:21 AM MST

On Monday, October 12, a federal grand jury began deliberations on corruption charges involving Kevin Ring. Like everyone else involved with Abramoff's money machine for Republican members of Congress, Kevin dutifully professed his innocence. (You do remember Jack Abramoff, right?)

It seems to have worked out. Earlier today, a US District Court Judge said she will declare a mistrial after the jurors of a grand jury declared themselves deadlocked.

Unless you follow progressive blogs, you may not know who Kevin Ring is. Despite being indicted, his name barely made the mainstream news, sort of, about a year and one-half ago. Kevin was a minion of Jack Abramoff's. And, is a good friend of Dennis Rehberg.

Oh, and Kevin gave Denny $2,000.00 in campaign contributions between June 13, 2002 and March 2003.

That just might have been a pay-off for Rehberg's recommendation to a county commission in eastern Montana contract with Mr. Ring to secure money for a project that was never completed.

LITW had a nice post.

But, alas, the burden of proof was not met, again. In fact, the Forbes article referenced above makes an interesting point:

Ring is only the second person implicated in the Abramoff scandal to fight the criminal charges at trial rather than pleading guilty and cutting a deal to cooperate with prosecutors in exchange for the possibility of a reduced sentence. The other was David Safavian, the George W. Bush administration's former chief procurement officer, whose convictions were overturned following a trial in 2006. Safavian was convicted again in a retrial and faces sentencing Friday.

This is pathetic. The single largest scandal of the 21st Century and one conviction.

One!

Looks like Denny caught another break.

What is it with wingnuts? (0.00 / 0)
They have no cognizance whatsoever of cause and effect.  'These Democrats got money from Abramhoff!'  SO WHAT?  What did he buy for that money?  When Democrats go after Republicans, they're willing to show that relationship.  When fools like Eric try and show hypocrisy, they are woefully unarmed.

[ Parent ]
I think the issue was the size (0.00 / 0)
of the scandal.  The claim is that Abramoff is THE scandal of the 21st century.  Doesn't Norman Hsu get an honorably mention?

http://www.nydailynews.com/new...

====================
"Everywhere I go, you're there," she added. "If you're not, you're sending someone to be part of my events. You know, we're going to win this campaign, Norman, because you're singlehandedly going to make that happen..."

"Get some sleep," said Clinton, now secretary of state. "Slow down for a few minutes. We're going to get to the end of the first quarter and then we can all take a little rest. Lots of love. Bye bye..."

Jurors also were shown dozens of photos that adorned the walls of Hsu's SoHo flat, picturing him with President Obama, Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, Howard Dean, Patrick Kennedy, Dianne Feinstein and Bill Richardson. Hsu, 58, pleaded guilty Friday to fraud-related charges stemming from a $20 million Ponzi scheme - but he's fighting charges he violated federal campaign contribution laws.

Clinton returned more than $800,000 in Hsu-linked contributions after details of the Ponzi scheme became public. Prosecutors say Hsu pressured former investors into making political contributions. His lawyer said the investors gave the money willingly to impress Hsu and "because they were greedy and frankly dumb."

...not at all... (0.00 / 0)
Hsu doesn't even come close. The Abramoff scandal essentially changed the way things worked in DC. It represented the corruption of the entire entity of government, not just a single donor. It toppled a Speaker of the House, at least one Senator, and a clutch of Representatives.

What's concerning is that the Abramoff mess was never really cleaned up. Investigations "fizzled." It was as if having a couple of folks lose their jobs was bad enough. Which says something about the hubris of DC that they think that's fit punishment for the bullsh*t they pulled.

[ Parent ]
Well it looks those (0.00 / 0)
that came to Washington with a broom to clean up corruption were just funnin'.  Isn't that a larger scandal?

[ Parent ]
Disappointment, yes. (0.00 / 0)
Scandal, no.

[ Parent ]
yup. (0.00 / 0)
I am not pleased about it. Same with the administration's unwillingness to go after those that created and implemented the US torture policy.

Really, the folks in DC seem to have more loyalty to each other, regardless of political affiliation, than they do to, say, oh, the rule of law.

[ Parent ]
I think what we are seeing (0.00 / 0)
a huge amount of risk aversion to change, because you know, it might just get in the way of... change.

In other words, cleaning up the mess of the past gets in the way of moving forward, or so their theory goes. When in reality, if you don't clean house first, your redecoration looks rather ostentatious.

Your missing-the-point style is unstoppable (0.00 / 0)
No Craig.  The point isn't whether Abramhoff was "The single largest scandal of the 21st Century" (since you insist on misquoting).  Personally, I'd nominate Bernie.  BUT, the point that Yellowstone Kelly made was that the legal reaction to the scandal has been pathetic.  And I must confess my surprise; even as foolish as Eric often is in defense of Republicants, he was closer to the point than you were.

[ Parent ]
That was not a quote in that comment. (0.00 / 0)
However I did quote YK above when I wrote:  'Abramoff is the "single largest scandal of the 21st Century."' The second remark was my interpretation of YK's assertion.

In terms of the legal reaction, I don't believe anyone but Hsu has been prosecuted in that scandal either.

Both scandals involved Democrats that promised corruption reform.  When will we see?

[ Parent ]
What planet do you live on? (0.00 / 0)
When most Democrats learned of Hsu's misconduct, they returned money in droves.  Your own link shows that.  Abramhoff traded money for legislative favors.  Apples and oranges, Craig.  Now precisely what reforms are you caterwauling for that would cover both circumstances and why do you only do it in defense of Republicants?

[ Parent ]
What's your planet? (0.00 / 0)
Where have I defended R's in this discussion???????  BTW, as I recall the D's reluctantly returned the Hsu money.

[ Parent ]
Uh, check your facts (0.00 / 0)
Remember the earmark for an Indian Tribe in Michigan that everyone got so mad at Burns for supporting.  Yeah, that earmark was requested by Stabenow and Levin - both of whom are on the list.  Both Democrats.

For example.

[ Parent ]
Dang... (0.00 / 0)
That was supposed to be a reply to Wulfgar's first post.

As long as I'm here, let me also suggest that maybe the "scandal" was only such for the obvious political ramifications.  Maybe all the stuff Dems said was happening didn't really happen.  Maybe the "Culture of Corruption" was a well-sold marketing scheme to win elections.

[ Parent ]
You want to go there again, do you? (0.00 / 0)
Seriously?

Don't you remember ol' Burns essentially ordered the Dept of Interior -- against their own grant requirements -- to give a $3M grant to the tribe after receiving...what was it? 75K in campaign contributions from the tribe in soft-money contributions?

Oh, and for anybody who's going for the right's "rehabilitation" of Boss Hogg Burns, just bookmark TPMuckraker's Burns reference page.

[ Parent ]
Y'all on the right.. (0.00 / 0)
...should probably just pretend ol' Connie simply didn't exist. That, and be glad he's out of DC. Seriously. He's bad by DC standards, and that's saying something.

[ Parent ]
Remember the Marianas (0.00 / 0)
That little chain of islands in the Pacific (called a commonwealth in political union with the United States) where the wages were kept abysmally low by votes of congress.  Labor laws were non-existent -- women kept in near slave-like conditions and resorting to prostitution, sweatshops, child labor, etc. -- thanks in part to Conrad Burns and Jack Abramoff.

Five thousand... (0.00 / 0)
...was all it took for Burns to turn his back on sweatshops, forced prostitution and abortions. Real class act, that one.

[ Parent ]
Get it right (0.00 / 0)

You mean the accusations that the Justice Dept investigated, and decided there was nothing there?

Of course, that was after Jon Tester lied about it for 6 months, and people on this very blog were CERTAIN that indictments would be handed down any day, right?

[ Parent ]
you don't want to go there (0.00 / 0)
Honestly, Coobs. You don't want to bet your house on Conrad Burns' high ethical standing. He was a terrible, corrupt Senator. You're better off without him.
