The all-too-familiar ritual

by: Jay Stevens

Wed Dec 02, 2009 at 20:29:18 PM MST

Jonathan Cohn, on health care reform:

It's no fun to watch this unfold. And yet this is the exactly the sort of drama you should expect for the next few weeks, as the Senate deliberations play out.

The bill Majority Leader Harry Reid introduced last week is not everything it could be--not by a long shot. And progressives will try their best to improve it. But the real battle will be an ongoing rearguard action, to fend off changes from the right--amendments that, in many cases, Republicans will support even though they have no intention of voting for the final bill. Abortion. Immigration. The mandates, for individuals and employers. You name it.

For progressives, victories are more likely to come in the form of ground not conceded than ground gained. Every day that legislation doesn't get worse is a day to cherish.

I didn't define anything... (0.00 / 0)
...I posted a link. I think you're a tad confused: I'm not celebrating this, I think it's incredibly frustrating. But I think it's true. We are not going to have any positive steps forward from here on out, we can only defend what meager ground we gained. Which sucks, but doesn't make it any less true.

Silly ol' jed (0.00 / 0)
You keep using the word dignity and don't even understand what it means.  For the word to have any meaning at all, it must be an innate quality to all creatures which have claim to it, whether ol' jed likes those creatures or not.  You on the other hand it, twist the meaning of the word such that an innate quality only lies with those you carry values you endorse.  The well fed raven or fattened maggot is every bit as dignified as the starving lamb, if the analogy is to have any efficacy.  To you it doesn't because you don't undestand the word.  Morally speaking, you're nothing better than a Christian Fundamentalist in that respect, jed.  It's a small matter though.  Given your obvious professed hypocrisy on this point and others, it isn't difficult to suss out where you 'stand on principle'.
