Hunting in Yellowstone?

by: Matt Singer

Wed Mar 21, 2007 at 14:30:18 PM MST

I've got to say, this took me by surprise. I'm not sure why our Governor is pitching the idea of the federal government allowing bison hunting inside Yellowstone, but it's an idea I'm really not too comfortable with.

I'm not really a Buffalo Field Campaign type, but even if you think of bison like I do, I think most Americans treasure the National Park system for what it is -- a group of parks for mass enjoyment. We've got a lot of public lands that are multi-use, including for hunting and for motorized use. Parks really aren't for hunting. They're a way to let the vast majority of Americans enjoy the outdoors, view wildlife, etc.

Now, I suppose I could be wrong on this -- and that there is already hunting within parks. But I don't think so and it really doesn't strike me as a good move, any more than a proposal to let snowmobilers go into the wilderness areas I love would strike me as a good idea.

I'm conditionally in favor (0.00 / 0)
As long as no snowmobiles or four wheelers are used and the hunters are required to use bows, but not compound bows.

Of course, as a level playing field supporter, I was also in favor of this.

The Park ain't the problem. (0.00 / 0)
I've been ruminating over this all afternoon.  Mostly, I just have questions.

Given our Governor's well-known ability for bombast, why is anyone taking his suggestion at all seriously?  It does seem that there's a few folk who think he was advocating a Yellowstone hunt.  I don't see it that way.  As I read the story and the comment, Schweitzer was pointing out the silliness of federal expectation; that Montana deal with federal property (that somehow isn't when it crosses an arbitrary line) simply because it will really hurt Montana if we don't. And Montana gets to cope with the fall-out of the federal government's inability to deal with a problem because federal officials are too damned afraid to admit that the problem can be solved (in any way different than hucking the problem onto Montana's shoulders.)

I honestly do not think that Brian was calling for hunting in Yellowstone.  But it will cost this state a buttload of bucks if we lose our Brucelosis-free status.  So, if these bison are such a national treasure that they shouldn't be shot in 'our' little park, why should Montana face the economic consequence for some Japanese tourist's feel-good dollars?

If that's what Brian was getting at, and I tend to think it was, then I agree with him.  If it's okay for Montana to look like ass by having a bison hunt, then it should be okay for the federals to share the PR burden by hunting the damn critters where their responsibility lies ... in the Park.

Actually, (0.00 / 0)
I don't think that it will cost Montana a buttload of bucks if we lose our b-fee status.  Last time we lost it, it didn't hardly effect anything!  I think that there was one southern state that wouldn't take Montana beef.  It's all a damn lie.  The B-free status is simply a state to state agreement.  That's all.  Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the status is the biggest red herring around.  Besides, nearly ALL elk have brucellosis!  The cattle brought to Montana early on GAVE brucellosis to the bison!  Some irony, huh?  A simple vacination will prevent completely brucellosis in cattle.  Duh.  And why CAN'T those bison be allowed to roam outside the park on land ORIGINALLY SET ASIDE FOR JUST SUCH A PURPOSE?!  This whole thing stinks to high heaven.  Course, denny rehburp don't want NUTHIN' wild left anywhere!  ESPECIALLY anything that might have significance to Native Americans.  It's OUR country now dammit!  I think the hunt is a good idea, but not in the park.  In fact, so do the Buffalo Field Campaign people.  A buddy of mine shot a bison this year, and ran into Mike Mease, the head of the FC, who was getting ready to go elk hunting!  Hunting as a means of control is fine, but roundup and slaughter doesn't work.  These are wild animals, and you don't round up wild animals!  They nearly kill themselves when penned up in trucks, etc.

Brian, Like Lange he used to be a Demo (0.00 / 0)
Who is this Gov. of Montana, where did he come from and what does he stand for?  He isn't a democrat, we know that.  The Bison idea is a bad one, one of many bad ideas this republican governor of Montana has had.  Won't matter though with the air quality we can look forward to, thanks to his other brilliant let's do the coal thing idea, in about 10 years no Bison will survive in the debris infested air, oh and the mobiles in the park will probably be armed with semi auto's just to make the slaughter fun.

Brian is not to be trusted, Brian is not a Democrat, Brian will destroy everything Montanan's hold dear, Brian is accountable to no one.  Who is this republican and which companies are giving him kick backs....??

Hunting in the park goes against the very mission of the Park.  If I was confused about his agenda I am no longer.  Brian is as out of touch with Montana as Rehberg.

Republicans must love their undercover mascot.

As I drive through Yellowstone this weekend, I will let the buffalo know, if you see a tall guy with a Bollo tie, don't be fooled like the rest of the herd in Montana, RUN!
