| I've got to say, this took me by surprise. I'm not sure why our Governor is pitching the idea of the federal government allowing bison hunting inside Yellowstone, but it's an idea I'm really not too comfortable with.
I'm not really a Buffalo Field Campaign type, but even if you think of bison like I do, I think most Americans treasure the National Park system for what it is -- a group of parks for mass enjoyment. We've got a lot of public lands that are multi-use, including for hunting and for motorized use. Parks really aren't for hunting. They're a way to let the vast majority of Americans enjoy the outdoors, view wildlife, etc.
Now, I suppose I could be wrong on this -- and that there is already hunting within parks. But I don't think so and it really doesn't strike me as a good move, any more than a proposal to let snowmobilers go into the wilderness areas I love would strike me as a good idea. |
