Why Hasn't the Montana GOP Renounced the Anti-Indian Comments of GOP Chair Michael Steele?

by: Montana Cowgirl

Sat Jan 09, 2010 at 10:27:09 AM MST

Across the nation, calls for GOP Chair Michael Steele to make an apology for his racist, uneducated comments on national televison continue to mount, but he's not having any of it.  Huffington Post has his comments defending his racism on the Dennis Miller radio show:

I said look you want o come after me, you want to do this job then take it from me. But until then, shut up and get in line.... This is why are at 22 percent approval in the polls, why no one wants to identify with us because we spend more time tearing each other down as opposed to talking about those principles that have defined us for generations.

What kind of "principles that have defined us for generations" is he talking about?

Here in Montana, American Indians are our state's first residents and among our most honored leaders and elders.  Governor Schweitzer has worked hard to rebuild the relationships between our state and the sovereign nations within its borders.  And for the first time, Montana voters elected our first American Indian woman, Denise Juneau, to statewide office.

We want leaders who will end racism, not promote it.  So we want to know: Will the Montana GOP renounce the bigotry and ignorance of their national leader or will they continue to lend him their silent support?

We're waiting.

After your Bozeman faux paux (0.00 / 0)
I am amazed how you so easily jump into the shit once again.

First, no one is a citizen of a state.  In our country citizenship is from the federal organism.  "America Indians" as you call them were not granted citizenship until the 20th century.

Second, as you try to make political hay,  where was your call for an apology from Biden, and a call from the Montana Dem party to disown many racist gaffes?

Biden:

"I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy..."

"You cannot go to a 7-11 or Dunkin Donuts unless you have a slight Indian Accent. Oh, I'm not joking!"

Regarding Delaware he said in South Carolina that Delaware was a "slave state that fought beside the North. That's only because we couldn't figure out how to get to the South. There were a couple of states in the way."

Leaving aside the obvious fallacy of your comment (0.00 / 0)
about state citizenship, which would require us to divert this thread over to a discussion of de jure (state) citizenship vs. 14th amendment citizenship--or look to Webster's definition of citizen as: 2a) "a member of a state"-- I suppose you are taking the stance that because Biden has a big mouth, that it is ok for Steele to utter racist statements, and not ok to criticize him for doing so?

Par for the course...

JC, it was quite predictable that (0.00 / 0)
you would construct a straw man with your "I suppose."  Par for the course.

[ Parent ]
Did you mean "faux pas" instead of "faux paux"? (0.00 / 0)
In case you aren't familiar with the term, "faux pas" which means violation of certain social rules.  I don't care if the rule is "thou shalt defend the mayor of the almighty Bozeman."   He seems out of touch to me.  I called him on it.  Get over it.

[ Parent ]
Oh, and if I'm that predictable (0.00 / 0)
can you please enlighten me as to what I might say next? That way I don't have to think or respond... I can just take a nap. zzzzzzz

A supposition does not a straw man make (0.00 / 0)
You have yet to refute my assertion about your mis-characterization of "citizenship" or attempting to divert the point of the diary--which was to lambast Steele and the state GOP--by resorting to a typical argument that goes along the lines of "so and so did x, so why should we care that y did the same thing"?

So again I ask, just because Biden is a loud mouth, does that make Steele's utterances ok? And is it ok for the state GOP to ignore their party's leader when he makes racist statements?

The answers are really pretty simple, if you don't resort to smokescreen diversions.

Par? Meh. I'll give you a mulligan, if you want to try again.

JC, in your case it does. (0.00 / 0)
It's one to to call out Steele over his comment. He deserves it.   It's quite another to use Native Americans or any other minority to score political points, as MC attempted to do.   JC, defending such  behavior reveals your own racist tendencies for political expediency.

Failing to acknowledge that the Montana Dem party was not called out nor did it volunteer to "...renounce the bigotry and ignorance of their [VP] or will they continue to lend him their silent support"  reveals how much progressive pols really don't give a goddamn about offending others, just so long as there is opportunity to benefit by it and point fingers.

Buckshot in the wind, Craig (0.00 / 0)
And where was I "defending such behavior?" And which behavior are you referring to that you allege I defended, by which you accuse me of "racist tendencies?" I've not defended any scoring of political points. I have pushed the question.

If you want to right a diary here lambasting Biden for his words, feel free to do so. Taking potshots at me for trying to pin you down will get you nowhere.

Bogey.

Hard to believe that anyone is dumb enough to believe this kind of crap.  And yet . . .

Mr. Moore (0.00 / 0)
I think you should probably write the text of the first sentence of the Fourteenth Amendment 50 times on the blackboard.  When you finish that, maybe you should try the first sentence of section two of Article III of the Constitution 10 times (It's kind of long -- and anyway, you get to write about state citizens several times in each iteration, so 10 ought to be sufficient).

Confirm thy soul in self control, thy liberty in law.

Prompt ? (0.00 / 0)

What prompted this attack on Michael Steele Montana Cowgirl?

It wouldn't just by chance, have anything to do with the fact that he's called out Harry Reid about Reids racism, is it?

Is there a double standard here?

Is racism NOT really racism when it's uttered by a Dem?

One big difference? Steele refuses to apologize. (0.00 / 0)
