How the Flathead Valley was saved

by: Junior

Thu Feb 11, 2010 at 20:26:59 PM MST

( - promoted by Jay Stevens)

As some of you may have noticed British Columbia announced its intentions to ban all mining, oil and gas development, and coalbed methane development from the Canadian Flathead Valley.

In the Throne speech or BC's version of the State of the State Lt. Governor Point made that declaration and that a partnership had been formed between BC and Montana.

No Federal Government on either side stepping in telling either the province of BC or the state of Montana what to do, just Premier Campbell and Governor Schweitzer sitting down like two statesmen working out a deal.

Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer said he would be flying to Vancouver, B.C., next week to sign a memorandum of understanding between the state and the province.

Staff members of both governments have been working on the deal since Schweitzer began meeting with British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell in the spring of 2005, he said.

How significant is this development? This a probably the greatest signal victory for the region, Glacier National Park, Flathead Lake, and mother earth in a generation.  I could think of no better gift on Glacier's 100 year anniversary than this.  To that I thank Governor Schweitzer and Premier Campbell.

Junior :: How the Flathead Valley was saved
It even appears that BC Flathead Valley's strongest opponent Bill Bennet liked the proposal without somebody sticking their nose where it doesn't belong.

"So I think it will be very difficult now for Montana Senator Max Baucus and Wildsight to argue that we still need a park in the Flathead."

In developing its Flathead policy, Bennett says the B.C government has had contact with Montana state officials, who are on side with the province. But there has been no contact with Baucus who caused a ruckus in Fernie three years ago when he invited himself to a public meeting and spoke in favour of the park proposal.

"We're treating this as a B.C. to Montana issue."

Let's hope this MOU gets signed before someone who's not invited shows up.

Thank you Governor! (0.00 / 0)
This is great news - hats off to all involved! The Governor rocked on this one...sounds like Max, not so much. Happy 100th Glacier!

Flathead North Fork Deal (0.00 / 0)
It appears to be a remarkable accomplishment, although at this point the details are sketchy.

I join those who applaud the efforts of Governor Schweitzer and Senator Baucus, but most of all I applaud the efforts of the citizen activists of the Flathead, and their counterparts in Canada, who worked for 35 years to make this possible. Without the tremendous grassroots support for preserving the headwaters of the Flathead Valley, the politicians could not have succeeded.

There are many people who deserve credit, among them: John Frederick, Wayne Herman, Richard Kuhl, Lex Blood, Jim Cummings, Jon Heberling, Doug Chadwick and Karen Reeves, Rachel Potter, Dave Hadden, Steve Thompson, Rosalind Yanishevsky, Loren Kreck, Dan Short, John Gatchell, Elaine Snyder, Diane Boyd, Thurman Trosper, Jack Stanford, and others.

Today, the development issue was an attempt to mine coal in the upper reaches of the Canadian Flathead, at least 25 miles north of the border. But in the early 1970s, the initial proposals for development involved two coal filled mountains just nine miles NW of Glacier National Park, mountains that would have been converted to pits a mile wide and a thousand feet deep, just a one-iron shot west of the Flathead River. Equally disturbing, there were proposals to build a new 3,000-person town a few miles north of the mine.

That's what those citizen activists stopped. I applaud the efforts of our elected officials, but my highest praise is reserved for those who labored at the grassroots level.

Looks like the good gov (0.00 / 0)
just got himself an all-expenses paid vacation to the Olympics next week, er... an opportunity to go sign the MOU.

But really, this is a great accomplishment. Kudos to all involved!

I wonder how much of Brian's political aspirations played into the negotiations? I can hear him now--when I'm [VP, Energy Secretary, plug in title of your choice], I'll make sure we screw you royally if you develop the Flathead ("we've been thinking about building this dam...").

Well, that's equally as valuable... (0.00 / 0)
as enviros congratulating each other and giving each other awards, doncha think?  I've been around enviros a loooong time, and some of them live for getting an award.  (and some are simply satisfied with the results achieved)  Hey, that's OK.  Some folks need strokes, some need aspirations.
Some of the dirtiest grunty evniro work being done is by folks who  never get an award  and never wanted one.  ie.  I heard some bozo from mizoola on their NPR one time reading a list of the "great warriors" in the battle for the Blackfoot.  Not ONE mention of Jim Jensen or MEIC, just a bunch of little wannabees in greater mizoo, some who "wrote great letters to the ed"!  Kinda  pathetic.

So, I say Schweitzer did the right thing for the right reasons.  Do you really think judy mars or marc ratco would'a done as much??  He shouldn't be dinged for doing the right thing for God's sake!  That's cheap.  Just sayin'.
