6th Candidate Files for U.S. House

by: Matt Singer

Tue Feb 23, 2010 at 13:05:24 PM MST

We're about to be able to field a full baseball team. Mark French, a rancher and clinical laboratory scientist from Paradise, filed as a Republican and hit Rehberg pretty hard for supporting too much government spending and other forms of big government like the PATRIOT Act. It looks like we may have a real libertarian-style challenger here.

Rehberg's office hilariously emphasized Rehberg's fiscal discipline in response.

So far, French is saying he won't actively raise money. A.J. Ottjen is also having a tough time getting traction, but it is increasingly clear that this is a difficult environment for incumbents.

CROSSOVER TIME IN THE PRIMARIES! (0.00 / 0)
Looks like I may have to cross OVER once again the primaries in order to send Dopey Rehburp back to the goat farm!  'Sides, I really DO like that Ottjen lady.  She seems only bout a hunnert times smarter than goat boy.

Good luck with that! (0.00 / 0)
Oh wait...there's a Dem primary for the House too...I'm sure you crossing over won't hurt your ideal candidate's chances of getting the nod to take on Rehberg

I'M CROSSIN' ANYWAY, BABY! (0.00 / 0)
Rusty, I just gotta try!  The Dem side will take care of itself, but I'm advocating for a full on Flush Blimpo tactic here.  Let's all on the Dem side pull the ol' switcheroo and get Ottjen elected in the primaries!  Heck, French will pull a few of the Jumpin', Thumpin', Bible beatin' Lumpen and the kook crowd, and maybe split the ticket just enought.  Then maybe, just maybe, we can DUMP DOPEY in the primaries!  'Sides, from what I been reading about Ottjen, she'd be perfectly acceptable!

It's worth a shot.  It's proactive.  And it's DAMN FUN to mess with Dopey's mind!  (such as it is).  We finally put old Conrad out to pasture.  Now it's time to send old Dopey to the old sailor's home!  (Wasn't that a Hemmingway short story, Sailor's Home?  Or maybe I'm gettin' it confused with The Old Lush and the Sea)

Hey Larry - (0.00 / 0)

Hey Larry - I do that sometimes - vote a Dem primary ticket just to vote against somebody.

But it'd never work with Denny -

I thought you were supporting Melinda Gopher - did you change your mind?

No. Not at all. (0.00 / 0)
Actually, I didn't say that I'd vote for her. I just said that she was a fantastic candidate.  Fearless, smart, and a real humanitarian.  But I wonder about her chances of pulling it off.  I may decide to vote for her yet. I dunno.  But the chance to cast a meaningful vote against Dopey is very tempting.  Get enough people in the primary, and we just might split the vote enough.

be called upon to declare whether they support the Texas lawsuit and now this letter to the EPA:  http://thehill.com/blogs/e2-wi...

Coal-state Dems challenge EPA on its climate-action plans
By Ben Geman - 02/20/10 08:46 AM ET

Eight Senate Democrats jointly said Friday that they fear the economic effects of planned EPA global warming rules, signaling a widening Democratic challenge to EPA action even as legislation to create a new climate-change program remains stuck.

The Democrats, who hail mostly from coal-producing and coal-reliant states, said in a letter to the EPA that they have "serious economic and energy security concerns" about rules to limit greenhouse gases from power plants and other stationary sources.

Sen. Jay Rockefeller (W.Va.) spearheaded the letter, which was also signed by Sens. Max Baucus (Mont.), Sherrod Brown (Ohio), Mark Begich (Alaska), Robert Byrd (W.Va.), Robert Casey (Penn.), Claire McCaskill (Mo.) and Carl Levin (Mich.).

"We remain concerned about the possible impacts on American workers and businesses in a number of industrial sectors, along with the farmers, miners, and small business owners who could be affected as your agency moves beyond automobile emissions standards to implement regulations to curtail GHG pollution from stationary sources," states the letter to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson.

" the Texas lawsuit" (0.00 / 0)
Which lawsuit would that be? And why should we care?

And so what if a bunch of corporate dems write a letter to the EPA? What did you expect? Their strings have just been jerked by their energy corporation funders. The marionette effect. We should be concerned with how good a show they put on?

The only issues a real candidate needs to bring up is how to transition the economy from one built on carbon-based energy sources to one based on other sources.

Of course, people like you can continue to speculate on elections based on 19th and 20th century technology. And then China will become the leader in the 21st, and we'll be buying our next generation of energy technology from them, with the money we get from selling them coal.

In other words, failure to transition from oil and coal to new energy sources as quickly as we can will render us into a banana republic for Chinese oligarchs and technocrats.

JC ????? (0.00 / 0)
People like me?  "Sen. Jay Rockefeller (W.Va.) spearheaded the letter, which was also signed by Sens. Max Baucus (Mont.), Sherrod Brown (Ohio), Mark Begich (Alaska), Robert Byrd (W.Va.), Robert Casey (Penn.), Claire McCaskill (Mo.) and Carl Levin (Mich.)."

Regarding the Texas lawsuit, once again JC you demonstrate such helplessness,  see:  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/...

The last poll I saw showed over 60% of Montanans wanted coal development.  Do you see why it is an issue given the current wrangling over Otter Creek or do you need someone to draw you a picture?

If you're going to make (0.00 / 0)
vague references, Craig, you'd best back them up with a URL.

I could care less what a handful of Senators want, when it comes to coal. I could care less that 60% of Montanans are polling pro-coal (again, links to back up your assertions), if in fact they are.

Big money corporations can buy all the senators and public perceptions they want. Why would I want to base any of my policy positions on that? That's what gumbys and easily led pundits do.

JC, get a grip (0.00 / 0)
on reality.  My comment that sent you sky rockets was an observation on my part as to what I thought, and why, will be an issue for candidates to declare their positions. I presented no position on that issue. I could care less what your policy position is. Mine is equally irrelevant. The candidates positions are all that matter.

As to the % of Montanans that support coal development, it is greater than 60%.  I am not going to hold your hand anymore. Look it up yourself.  If you find something different, please tell.

My grip on reality is just fine, (0.00 / 0)
thank you very much.

As you are too lazy to post links to specific polls, and make rash generalizations based on no presented data, here are some numbers for you:

Opinion Research Corporation Montana poll, October 2008

A survey conducted by the Opinon Research Corporation for TheClean.org and the Civil Society Institute found that Montanans favor renewable energy and energy efficiency over fossil fuels and nuclear power. The survey of 601 Montana residents found that:

* Almost 70 percent of Montana residents support a moratorium on new coal-fired power plants. When brokent down by political party, the freeze on new coal plants is favored by 83 percent of Democrats, 59 percent of Republicans, and 53 percent of Independents.

* 56 percent of Montana residents prefer energy soures such as solar and wind, increased energy efficiency, and highly fuel-efficient vehicles as a means to achieving independence to foreign energy, as opposed to only 35 percent who favor oil from offshore drilling, more coal power plants, and nuclear power.

* Only 10 percent of Montana residents favor allowing coal-to-liquids technology. 39 percent oppose subsidies for CTL under any circumstnces, and 48% would allow subsidies only with strict environmental controls.

From an NCAT poll: Montanans support renewable energy sources over coal 61-16%

So, no I don't believe that 60% of Montanans really support more coal development. And if you want to throw your CoC power push poll results out there , I'm sure we'd all like to debate them.

Mark's more of a constitutionalist than libertarian . . . (0.00 / 0)
not that i can claim to know the full difference, but he strikes me as far more conservative than a Stan Jones type Republican/Libertarian.

I know him well enough - living in a small community like ours it's hard not to.  He's a decent fellow, but quite fundamental.  He and a group of other proto-tea partiers tried to gain control of the local Republican central committee.  They didn't get much traction and I think would be hard pressed to garner a ground swell of support here.  And if you can't gain much support in conservative-ville-Sanders County, I don't know how you can hope to attract support in the rest of the state.

Maybe I'm wrong . . . but I wouldn't put much hope in a Mark French upset (or even a dent).

Also, Mr. K - I do still hope we can discuss Race to the Top . . . at your convenience.

Here's an idea. (0.00 / 0)
Put you thoughts in a diary to the right.  I might take a look at them and comment.  But sometimes, it's just not worth the effort. I seriously doubt that even with a barage of facts I could change your mind. I promise to look at it though.  Right now, I really can't remember the details except that you were angry that Montana rejected federal money  with some real, burdensome strings attached.  I'm kinda outta the education loop at the moment.  Pogie might jump in though.  He's  still in the thick of things.  I have fought many education battles over the years, sometimes alone.  It's someone else's turn for awhile.  See what your teachers think, and also Eric Feaver.  Part of the problem is that everyone thinks they're a teacher, but they really haven't a clue.  Teaching is an art, NOT a science.  Goofy attempts to corral education as a science are just that, goofy.

Glad that Mark French candidate ain't my daddy (0.00 / 0)
I read that one of French's main planks (along with the usual anti-choice, anti-gay crap) was his strong support of corporal punishment.  It was ironic that the news story about French in the Missoulian was directly below a story coming out of the Bitterroot about a guy that beat the sh*t out of his two infant kids.
