The party of Fear

by: Jay Stevens

Fri Mar 05, 2010 at 12:06:36 PM MST

This scoop from Politico on a discovered strategy document from the RNC isn't surprising:

The Republican National Committee plans to raise money this election cycle through an aggressive campaign capitalizing on "fear" of President Barack Obama and a promise to "save the country from trending toward socialism."

The strategy was detailed in a confidential party fundraising presentation, obtained by POLITICO, which also outlines how "ego-driven" wealthy donors can be tapped with offers of access and "tchochkes."

The presentation was delivered by RNC Finance Director Rob Bickhart to top donors and fundraisers at a party retreat in Boca Grande, Florida on February 18, a source at the gathering said.

In neat PowerPoint pages, it lifts the curtain on the often-cynical terms of political marketing, displaying an air of disdain for the party's donors that is usually confined to the barroom conversations of political operatives.

The presentation explains the Republican fundraising in simple terms.

"What can you sell when you do not have the White House, the House, or the Senate...?" it asks.
The answer: "Save the country from trending toward Socialism!"

It's nice to see some actual proof that the conservative movement's cries of socialism are blatantly manufactured, although sadly this rhetoric has actual consequences in places like Montana, where anti-statist radicals like Roger Koopman have their delusional paranoia underscored by establishment Republican fund-raising pitches. The result: some real whack-a-loons get to craft legislature.

But then most of the GOP has abandoned any pretense of aspiring to govern. The important thing is to win. Win elections, win media coverage, win with bumper-sticker slogans.

This has me laughing (0.00 / 0)
as it appears to be no more than what Dems are doing to raise money by threatening their base with fear over tea partiers and Sara Palin.  http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/P...

Jay, to borrow you slogan, "But then most of the Dems have abandoned any pretense of aspiring to govern. The important thing is to win. Win elections, win media coverage, win with bumper-sticker slogans."

I still see Obama bummer-stickers everywhere especially with those cars that have 9-11 truther slogans proudly displayed.

~sigh~ (0.00 / 0)
Craig, the fallacies in your rebuttal are almost overwhelming.

1)  One Democrat using fear as a fund raising tool is not the same as the primary fund raising arm of the entire Republican party doing so.

2)  The Republicans under Bush, and the unified voting block of Republicans since, have proven quite adequately that the Republicans have no interest in governing.  If Jay made a mistake, it was stating that "most of the GOP has abandoned any pretense of aspiring to govern."  They all have, and the evidence of that fact is clear.  Your claim about Democrats is as unfounded as it is foolish.  The Democrats aren't clean, not by a long shot, but when you break it down into a quantity, you're even more wrong than Mark usually is.

3)  There are realistic fears in the world, and unrealistic fears in the world.  That Democrats want socialism, Obama is a racist and terror of racial stereotypes is unrealistic fear.  The fear that a grifter would take the highest position in the country because of voter anger is very realistic.

4)  Winning is important; Jay never wrote anything to the contrary.  But to the GOP, it appears to be the only thing.  Despite your misdirection, those aren't the same claim.

5)

I still see Obama bummer-stickers everywhere especially with those cars that have 9-11 truther slogans proudly displayed.

That's bullshit, and I think you knew it when you wrote it.

Senior Scare, Yet Again
A DNC ad falsely accuses Republicans of voting "to abolish Medicare."

September 8, 2009

Summary

The Democratic National Committee says in a TV ad that "Republicans voted to abolish Medicare." Not true.

The ad refers to a proposal endorsed by most House Republicans as part of the alternative budget they presented earlier this year. In fact, the GOP plan actually called for:

   * Preserving the current Medicare program for anyone now receiving it, or within 10 years of qualifying for it.
   * For those now under age 55, converting Medicare to a system of private, government-approved health insurance plans purchased mostly with government payments.

The proposal is similar to one endorsed a decade ago by the National Bipartisan Commission on the Future of Medicare. It is controversial, to be sure: Most Democrats don't like it, and not all Republicans do either. It's a plan to change Medicare significantly but not to "abolish" it.

That's a Straw Man, Craig (0.00 / 0)
I haven't defended the DNC.  Try again.

Yes I have, (0.00 / 0)
especially on Volvos, Priuses, and Subarus.  Volvos tend to be particularly bill boarded.  When did they become "the peoples" car?

Craig, I'm not a dolt. (0.00 / 0)
Quit pretending that I am.

I live here in Montana, and though I see lots of Obama stickers, I have seen precisely two 'truther' bumper stickers.  That's precisely half of the number of the Celtic Cross National Alliance stickers I've seen.  So kindly quit pretending that this statement is even remotely true.

I still see Obama bummer-stickers everywhere especially with those cars that have 9-11 truther slogans proudly displayed.

No Craig.  That's bullshit.

The Great Leader, The Messiah, The Protector of the Poor, President Obama is a dangerous, committed leftist. Warning people to be frightened of his policies is simply doing a public service.

You're a classic, Coobs. (0.00 / 0)
You claim that the President
is a dangerous, committed leftist.

Yet you won't bother yourself to show the danger, or even explain his leftist cred.  The left does a better job of attacking Obama than you do, by far.  That doesn't speak too highly of your skills.  No, not so highly at all.

Only a comment was called for - LOL (0.00 / 0)

The topic is about the GOP using scare tactics -

My comment was that telling people to fear The Great Leaders policy is a good thing.

No need for me to outline the failures of The Great Leader, because everybody here knows them as well as I.

How do you like that 'Hope & Change' guys? - LOL
