| Over 140 FD, search, rescue, law enforcement, and EMS personnel from Flathead and Glacier Counties - many, if not most, volunteers - headed to Essex, MT today for a day long practice and drill simulating an avalanche of a passenger train. Remarkable inter-agency cooperation and collaboration with Amtrak and BNSF. The responders had communication problems - that region is a well known dead zone for transmissions and with so many agencies responding, choosing a frequency that would work for everyone...well, it didn't work. That's something to work on.
But the agencies were able to establish some clear command and get the rescue pretty well coordinated, despite that. I think it is amazing to see so many people turn out; giving up a nice Saturday so they can be a little better prepared to answer the call and work tirelessly and selflessly to save the lives of people they don't even know.
After a long, hard, day, a lot of fire, EMS, and rescue personnel are sleeping a little sore tonight...but our corner of the world might just be a little safer for everyone.
