Did Brian Schweitzer Just Jump the Kingfisher?

by: Matt Singer

I'm with Jay. This is maddening. It's one thing to mock and rib people for opposing development then requesting money from it. It's even worthwhile sometimes to expose the hypocrisy of people who might vote against the overall bill and then take credit for it.

But prioritizing public infrastructure projects in terms of local governments' support for political agendas is just beyond the pale.

This whole thing has left a really terrible taste in my mouth. I know I'm not alone on that front.

George Ochenski's editor has termed it "blackmail." I think the term they were looking for is "extortion."

We elect....... (0.00 / 0)
We elect extremely intelligent folks instead of Republicans for their brains and their leadership.  We do this because we expect them to lead us out of the wilderness with intelligence, courage, and most of all creativity.  Yes, creativity, because the problems we face as a state are constantly evolving and changing.  We expect our leaders to discover new ways of dealing with problems, NOT to  march backwards to the good old days of corporate rule, rape, ruin, and run!  Is there really no alternative to our economic problems than this?

I think that there is.  I don't think that Montanans want to sacrifice our land for short-term gain.  I think that they EXPECT our leaders  like Schweitzer to find new economic engines that fit our new way of thinking and our new values.   We've done the extractive route, and we don't want to go back.  A green ethic has replaced the greenbacks at all costs ethic.  We're just not into becoming a national sacrifice zone, even in Eastern Montana.  (an area that I am quite familiar with and love)

We live here BECAUSE we love this land.  If we were simply concerned about money, maybe W. Virginia or Texas City, Texas would be a better place to live.  Most Montanans I know couldn't live there.  For you see, the Bible said it best.  It states that there will come  a time when "the living will envy the dead".  To be forced to live in a perpetually  festering toxic dead zone just might cause some of the  living to envy the dead who came before and didn't have to view the mess!  I guess it boils down to quality of life.  Do we really want to trade what we have now for a stripmined state?  I think that most Montanans would say no!

Coercion, blackmail, extortion, you name it (0.00 / 0)
This editorial is from today's Bozeman Chronicle.  They, apparently, saw it as blackmail, too.  But hey, "extortion" works just as well.

What doesn't work is Schweitzer thinking he can get away with this bullshit -- even if his initials are "B.S."

Chronicle editorial: Schweitzer should drop silly demands
Posted: Thursday, April 1, 2010 8:40 am

No one can ever accuse Gov. Brian Schweitzer of wasting his time at the bully pulpit. Over the course of a couple of days, he has managed to twist the arms of two distinct groups of his constituents through the use of what can only be termed as blackmail.

you guys are n't thinking clearly (0.00 / 0)
I think this is an over reaction. The legal ability for Schweitzer to do this might not be exist, but what about the principle? Why shouldn't some of the righties that raised holy hell about Obama's stimulus program, and now want the money, be held accountable to the public, in some sort of public shaming? You guys are too obsessed with the coal aspect of this.

Screw law if it makes Republicans look hypocritical?

You're sounding like Karl Rover or Dick Cheney.
