Election Day Registration survives

by: Matt Singer

Wed Apr 04, 2007 at 15:33:47 PM MST

The Senate Judiciary Committee voted on party lines to preserve Election Day Registration today. The GOP is using their same arguments -- if you don't register in advance, you're lazy; Q.E.D. you have no right to vote.

Interestingly, the Montana Constitution recognizes a right to vote:

Section 13. Right of suffrage. All elections shall be free and open, and no power, civil or military, shall at any time interfere to prevent the free exercise of the right of suffrage.
Since our Constitution acknowledges a right to vote, I'd think that the justification for impeding someone's vote would have to be higher than "I think they're lazy."

Still -- this is good news. The Republicans can kill stream access. They can kill biodiesel. They can kill full-time kindergarten (or try to). But they can't kill Election Day Registration. We got something past those guys.

Right to vote (0.00 / 0)
Here is yet another Singer leap in reasoning.

My right to vote is absolute then, and cannot be constrained by any rules that purport to limit it.

I would like to vote today or tomorrow for 2008 candidates.  I would like to vote at 2am.  I would like to vote by proxy.  I would like to vote the day after.

All of this just oozes out of your flawed premises and conclusion.  This is not Nam, there are rules.

There are rules... (0.00 / 0)
...and they allow for same day registration and voting.  You are just mad because most of those people don't vote for your side.  Deal with it.

higher than "i think they're lazy" = no rules? (0.00 / 0)
you have an incompetent mind.

The democrats are... (0.00 / 0)
ecstatic. Their right to round up the lazy and clueless derelict brigade, on election day, remains intact.

Ive heard some of the "day of" appeals.  The idiot masses of college democrats esque youths from Missoula jump in their parent sponsored Audis and run around town telling people that Bush is personally going to cut some of their benefits and force old people into eating dog food.  Its sad, but its just enough for them to coerce their otherwise not voting friends to get to the polls, whereafter they are rewarded with micro brew at the union club.  You know this is how it goes, its nice and easy to hide behind some appeal to voting rights, when you know damn well its a sham.  Its not hard to just get registered and vote in the days before.  Either way, its good to know that while Repubs may be on the other side of the pendulum right now their base does not require some same day hysterical appeal to get off the couch, put down the marlboro and government cheese and get out and vote.

That's stupid (0.00 / 0)
You are saying that those people who don't register early shouldn't be allowed to vote. Of course this is what the two of you have been screaming the whole time. What gets me is you are arguing that voting is the reward for registering, and its crap. I have to ask. What do you care? Since you register early and may even vote early what the hell difference does it make to you? You just can't handle that we played the game better. We got the vote out on election day and it got Burns out. We're gonna do it again next year.
Your biggest problem is that there are a few liberals and some democrats out there that are lazy. So here's the problem... All the republicans are already registered and that number is equal to a bit better than the democrats that are registered. If citizens weren't allowed to register on election day then you would win. Now if they were allowed to republicans don't have anyone extra to register, but democrats have a ton. And that's what bothers you. It bothers you that an extra person who goes to vote on election day is liberal and it hurts you. It's a weak ass argument that is being made against EDR. Suck it up you lost, and get used to it.

Audis? Try old K-Cars or a used Subaru wagon. (0.00 / 0)
Honestly, where do you come up with this crap?  Audis?  None of my "liberal" friends own an Audi. Or a BMW. Or a Mercedes.  Stop trying to make progressives into a bunch of East coast elitists.  You are the elitists, trying to keep poor people and kids from voting.  The only group of young people I know driving around in Audis are my old classmates from the Republican chalet Bucknell, and guess what?  Most of them don't vote either because they've been coddled their whole lives and can't wait to manage Daddy's Wall Street millions.  You guys have been driving around on election day telling every crazy church group in the country if they don't get in the van, we're going to make sure another baby is never born for the past 8 years. Meanwhile you take their money. Now you're paying for it.  See you again in 8 years morons.
