| The Senate Judiciary Committee voted on party lines to preserve Election Day Registration today. The GOP is using their same arguments -- if you don't register in advance, you're lazy; Q.E.D. you have no right to vote.
Interestingly, the Montana Constitution recognizes a right to vote: Section 13. Right of suffrage. All elections shall be free and open, and no power, civil or military, shall at any time interfere to prevent the free exercise of the right of suffrage. Since our Constitution acknowledges a right to vote, I'd think that the justification for impeding someone's vote would have to be higher than "I think they're lazy."
Still -- this is good news. The Republicans can kill stream access. They can kill biodiesel. They can kill full-time kindergarten (or try to). But they can't kill Election Day Registration. We got something past those guys. |
