The sad state of the Democratic House primary

by: Jay Stevens

Mon May 03, 2010 at 13:17:37 PM MST

So Pete Talbot wrote up a post on a guerrilla video ambush of Dennis McDonald in which he fumbled terribly when confronted with the Jimmy Weasel story the right's trying (pretty successfully) to push as McDonald's narrative for this race.

Yeah, McDonald looked unready for this race. But then that video was shot on October 26, 2009, and I suspect that was the first he had ever encountered that line of attack. If this happened today - after McDonald had his say on the matter - I'd say the candidate McDonald was cooked.

Thoughts:

For starters, hand it to the GOP. It's sticking. It's got to the point that even Democratic challengers are piggybacking on it. And it's got to be considered in the "electable" arguments that always rear up this time of the primary race.

For another, it's interesting that Rehberg et al went after McDonald so soon. They've been building this narrative for months. Not sure what that means. Maybe they saw him as the biggest threat. Maybe they just slammed him as soon as they got the idea.

And lastly, it's a sad state of affairs when this is the biggest story of the primary so far. In the next couple of days, I'll investigate the candidates and report back...hopefully we can do something more substantial before the primary, too.

Have to say - I'm completely undecided on this race.

Which reminds me: in the past, we've had advocates for primary candidates write posts here on Left in the West. This year is no different. If you want to write something up about McDonald, or Gopher, or Gernant - or about any primary candidate - sign in, write a diary, and I'll promote it. If you have questions or want me to look over your post before you submit it, email me...

Me too, but ... (0.00 / 0)
Have to say - I'm completely undecided on this race.

I'm leaning heavily to cross ballot voting in the primary.  And it's not just because I would pick Otjen over Rehberg.  Here in Gallatin county, County Commissioner Joe Skinner has proven himself a moderate and level headed person, even if he identifies as a Republican.  But Scott Sales (part of Sinrud/Koopman/Sales Terrible Triad) has embraced the Teabagger call for the destruction of rational representatives. I shouldn't have to clarify around here why Sales is worth keeping off the ballot.  Sadly (for McDonald) I doubt I'm the only local Democrat thinking this way.

Well said, Jay (0.00 / 0)
As I mentioned, I was torn about posting a six-month-old video that made a fellow I like look tame -- especially when the accuser is a punk staffer for the worst U.S. Representative that Montana has had in recent memory.

But since politics often focus on the shallow instead of the substantive, I suppose getting out front with a "mafia attorney" v. "a drunken boater" is a good Rehberg strategy.

And I hope I haven't assisted Rehberg's campaign by posting that video clip; I guess newsworthiness trumped my positive feelings for all the Democratic candidates.

I have NO problem with the fact McDonald represented a mafia don.  Everyone has the right to an attorney.  I know some defense lawyers here in Missoula who are decent guys and have represented murderers, rapists, and wife beaters.  It's part of the job description.

Finally, I won't be crossing party lines but then I don't have the same ballot as Wulfgar!.  I also believe there won't be too many other people crossing over for the other party's ballot.  It just doesn't happen.

Purely Hypothetical, of course, but - The best candidate for the Republicans for US Senate is:
Corey Stapleton
Dennis Rehberg
Marc Racicot
Champ Edmunds
Steve Daines
Harris Himes
Kreyton Kerns
