Dem primary is about new energy vs. old ideas

by: John_Firehammer

( - promoted by Matt Singer)

(John Firehammer is communications director for the Tyler Gernant for Congress campaign)

Democrats have a stark choice in the June 8 primary. While one candidate has articulated a clear path toward the future by advocating the development of clean, sustainable energy, another has no new ideas.

Tyler Gernant believes Montana has the potential to be a leader in the development of wind, solar and bio-fuel energy. This will bring billions of dollars and thousands of new jobs to the state.

His opponent, Dennis McDonald, on the other hand, is beholden to coal -- to the extent that he actually advocates the construction of a coal-fed generating plant at Montana's Otter Creek.

It doesn't seem to matter to McDonald that area ranchers oppose and fear coal development at Otter Creek, or that more coal is not the answer to Montana's energy and economic woes.

McDonald is firm in his support of this outmoded, short-term industry, while offering nothing in terms of policy that would move us away from our dependence on coal and foreign oil.

In short, McDonald is trapped in the past, while Tyler Gernant is poised to lead us into the future. The choice June 8 is one between new energy and old ideas.

You can hear McDonald detail his bad, backwards thoughts on energy policy here.

Interesting that you (0.00 / 0)
break this down into a two person primary.

What do you think about the "new ideas" of Melinda Gopher?

Or are just trying to ignore her?

While that's fair, given the headline (0.00 / 0)
I'd point out that I've not heard Melinda take a position on Otter Creek - even though it does bump up adjacent to the reservation.

Maybe I missed it, I don't know - but I was actually surprised that she didn't pick a position on it.  Especially since tribal members are divided on this quite openly, as was noted in testimony at the Land Board.  I do know that the tribal members supporting this think that they will get jobs and an oil-to-gasification plant, while others know that it will likely bring the same mining within their borders as will happening on Great Northern and State Trust lands.

Both Gernant and McDonald have been bumping heads on coal ever since Dennis McDonald has flip-flopped on it.

In Bozeman McDonald (just prior to the Otter Creek vote) said he fully supported mining Otter Creek - in Missoula just after the vote he gave some mumbo jumbo about taxing it more until we had "clean coal."

Melinda spoke to the coal issue (0.00 / 0)
in last Monday's Missoulian House profiles. She's pretty clear about being anti Otter Creek:

"Creating jobs by transforming the state's economy to one based on home-grown, clean energy is her priority.

She criticizes Democratic Gov. Brian Schweitzer for being "a coal cowboy" supporting the state's leasing of the Otter Creek coal tracts.

Gopher tells how Fort Belknap tribal leaders sought the help of her father and others to help them organize over the environmental damages at the Zortman-Landusky gold mines on the Hi-Line. "We did it through mid-1990 onward," she says.

"In the final analysis, what has always occurred in Montana - in Zortman-Landusky and it will be true in the Otter Creek development, which I do not support - if we keep doing boom-and-bust cycles, if we always do what we always have done, we will always get what we've got," Gopher says. "I want to move away from that failed dynamic that has defined our state's history."

Wow, billions of dollars (0.00 / 0)
and thousands of new jobs! You are overlooking another great possibility here, the fairy dust and magic wand industry. You are going to need something to overcome the laws of physics and economics so pass a law that says Montana will be the new home of the fairy dust industry. Then we can all ride our bikes to the windmill factory to go to work. None of this will be a problem for Tyler as he has all the wisdom and knowledge of real world experience from a couple of years of sitting behind the desk in a law office.

What state do you hail from? (0.00 / 0)
Just out of curiousity Mr. Firehammer - which state did tyler hire you out of?  He speaks so clearly on his angst at friends loosing jobs in the state of Montana but I can't help but notice he isn't hiring Montanans...a few from Idaho one from Ohio and which state gets the credit for bringing your thoughful insights to my home?  I can't say I'm that suprised considering Tyler has spent less than a third of his short life here..

Neither Gernant nor McDonald is running for a position that would allow them to vote on Otter Creek. (0.00 / 0)
Only the land board gets to make those votes.  So who cares what either of them think about it?
