Give us a reason to accept that you're for real

Yesterday, Cowgirl hammered the Montana press corps for not reporting the myriad sordid rumors afflicting various state politicos. That may be. But no paper will print a story without sources. And that means those that know, see, and hear need to step up and tell the truth.

But, frankly, until results or ability or integrity trump loyalty as the most valued characteristic in party politics, no political functionary is going to step up, even if she doesn't like what she sees, for fear - and a very real fear - of retribution. And no story is going to be written. Don't blame the reporter for letting a story die when no one has the guts to come forward.

It doesn't have to be that way. It takes - what? three? - independent, credible anonymous sources to support a story. If you're sickened by, say, rigged bids on public buildings or public offices for sale or elected officials getting caught up in prostitution rings, you can do something about it. Tell someone.

In the meantime, maybe the legislature can work on a bill that protects state-level whistle-blowers.

Ha (0.00 / 0)
to your last line.

Last session there was a bill proposed that would have made it illegal for state employees to testify at committee hearings.

Constitutional issues aside, it took a long time to die - sadly.

So don't hold your breath.

But I should add (0.00 / 0)
I agree with your whole post.

Jay Stevens blogs with his own name. I use my first name (but not my last name!) Who are you, jhwygirl, and why do you feel you need to be anonymous? Just curious.

Anonymous sources??? (0.00 / 0)
Read the transcript.  The lawyers are named.  I'm not the source,  I was not there.  Just saying.

Not saying you're making stuff up... (0.00 / 0)
...but I am saying there's no story unless someone corroborates the accusations. No one has.

The Montana Standard told its readers in an editorial today that investigating wrong-doing is not their job:

It's rare that an editor passes the buck so honestly and publicly.
Clearly, Lee Enterprises will not risk the loss of advertising revenue by reporting about crooks in the community. I have the feeling that if meth dealers advertised you'd only read stories about the wonderful things meth does for worker productivity.
Corporate journalism serves one master -- the stockholder. No one gives a damn about the needs of the community.
The marching orders are keeps costs low, piss no one off and keep that ad revenue flowing out of the local community to pay off corporate debt.
Newspapers are crashing nationwide because no one in the corporate boardroom understands that if you do not serve the public with the facts, regardless of the cost, you have no reason for being. You become irrelevant.
Everyone loses. Honest local business owners face competition from dishonest ones; voters elect corrupt (and drunk) politicians (that you only read about after they get caught) and corporations like Montana Power and W.R. Grace get to commit grand larceny and murder (respectively) because Montana's press consistently fails to tackle the tough stories.
A diligent reporter will find the sources and report the truth, but if the boss doesn't want to hear about it, what's the point?
