Proportional Representation

by: Matt Singer

Fri Nov 17, 2006 at 14:19:26 PM MST

Indians have reached proportional representation in the Montana legislature -- 10 Indians in a legislature of 150. One -- Doug Cordier -- was elected in Columbia Falls, a decidedly anglo-majority district (I've heard great things about Cordier -- alas, another person I have yet to meet).

The good news was written up by Indian Country Today. The victories -- which also included a number of county-level victories resulted from the same strong Indian turnout that helped put Jon Tester in the U.S. Senate.

Matt Singer :: Proportional Representation
Cordier is one of two freshmen Indian legislators. The other is Shannon Augare, one of the rising star young candidates who got elected this year.

Native Americans were definitely a factor in Tester win (0.00 / 0)
Governor Schweitzer and Jon Tester have treated the Indian nations in our state far better than they have been treated in a long while.  I think that some trust has resulted from that, and I think the opportunity and the desire for more Native Americans to participate in our state government.  When you consider the number of folks on the reservations, this diversity is welcome representation.
