D.C. Rights Group Takes on Montana Senator Tester

by: Matthew Koehler

( - promoted by Jay Stevens)

According to NBC in Washington DC, the Free and Equal D.C. Fund is taking on Senator Jon Tester for his sponsorship of a NRA-supported bill that would eliminate locally-enacted firearms regulations within DC.
"The group is now taking on Montana Sen. Jon Tester and Mississippi Rep. Travis Childers, sponsors of a bill that would eliminate any locally enacted firearms regulations within the District. Panetta said if their bill became law, "anybody would be free to walk around with a semiautomatic rifle in D.C. ... It's a slap in the face to local governments everywhere, and was only done to gain cheap political points with the National Rifle Association."

The group is running a radio ad in Montana, charging Tester with ignoring Montana's interests and wasting time on D.C. issues. The spot says Tester is not doing his job as an elected representative of the Treasure State, and that if he cares so much about District affairs, he can always resign from the Senate and run for D.C. Council."

This, of course, is a somewhat ironic turn of events, especially when considered in the context of Senator Tester and the "collaborators" 'local control' anti-DC talking points regarding the Forest Jobs and Recreation Act.

No grip at all (0.00 / 0)
The efforts of F&EDCF will gain no traction in this state at all, nor should it.

1)  Montanans aren't going to care, and will likely feel more favorable towards a Senator who favors the 2nd amendment.

2)  Whether Panetta likes it or not, DC is still a federal holding.  Attacking federal lawmakers for being federal lawmakers is pretty goofy on it's face.

3)  DC's gun ban was already stuck down by the SCOTUS, in Heller v. DC.  That was further reinforced by the ruling in McDonald v. Chicago.  Now DC may have about half our population, but Montana remains pretty well educated, especially when it comes to firearms and gun rights.  I'd make book that about twice as many Montanans know about those rulings as residents of DC.

4)  Panetta is lying his ass off. Nowhere does the DC Second Amendment Enforcement Act allow that

anybody would be free to walk around with a semiautomatic rifle in D.C.

That's simply not true.  And here's the real question.  So what if it was?  This is what the legislation actually accomplishes.  It's more than reasonable.  Again, Panetta is lying.

5)  That this legislation is NRA endorsed is little more than a lame attempt at cheap Ad Hominem by association.  And it is just that, cheap.  Everyone who knows me or has read anything I've written about gun rights knows that my opinion of the NRA could charitably be called 'less than favorable'.  But laws stand or fall on their own merit, not who favors such.  Tying Tester to the NRA might play well in Washington DC, but it ain't gonna mean crap in Montana.

In truth, I should be thanking the F&EDCF and you, Matthew.  This might be the best endorsement for reelection that Tester has gotten to date.
