The Cowardly Lions That Refuse To Roar

Wow.

It's not even Halloween and Montana's political leaders are scared shitless.

Our political leadership has been strangely silent on the subject of the recently discovered homophobic/murderous rants by a leader and members of the Montana Tea Party.

Dennis Rehberg, who is a member of the US House of Representatives Tea Party Caucus should be particularly enthusiastic about these revelations.

And yet, surprisingly, given his homophobic history - silence. Which is probably to be expected given his non-response to the Montana Republican Party's platform plank calling for the criminalization of homosexual acts. Self-serving at it's very best- which represents his entire political career, basically.

However, more deeply disappointing  and disturbing is the non-response of Max Baucus, a man whose national campaign for the health of all Americans doesn't seem to give two shits about the safety of his constituents back home. Or maybe he is too frightened to upset a homophobic voter in Central Montana. Or a lobbyist in Manhattan (not the Montana town, that other one on the East Coast). Being politically correct pays the bills - being morally couragous. Not so much.

Maybe Denny and Max are afraid for their safety. But they're not alone.

Take it from me, some of those constituents are definitely scared. In Montana, apparently, being gay means being the target of violent words advocating the displaying of your tortured body as a decoration or sport for everyone else. That's scary. One of the most beautiful places in the world, and suddenly I'm not admiring the mountains or the scenery as I'm driving. I'm looking at people in the cars around me wondering, "If they knew me would they would want to kill me and hang my body on a tree like a piece of strange fruit?"

And it's not okay.

Whose fear is more relevant here? Whose safety is more important? A political leader who has lost touch with his constituents, or the constituents themselves?

If someone targeted any other group of human beings - say, Native Americans, women, children, the handicapped, etc., the cries to heaven and the media would be deafening. The voices would be politicians, clergy, parents, doctors, bankers, rodeo cowboys, hunters and car dealers.

But it's The Gays. They're not people- they're a political liability. Fuck them.

It's not okay.

And someone who's been elected as a leader in this state should say so. Brian Schweitzer? Jon Tester?

Who's the Wizard going to give courage to?

Anyone?

I understand your anger and your fear.  You have good cause by almost any moral metric.  But I disagree with that statement.  We have protected classes, but GBLT persons are among the very many who aren't.  How many times do you think we've heard variations on the theme that Custer had the right idea, just poor execution.  A state politician of my acquaintance has said the if we shot a 'hoop' or two, the rest might get a clue, and a job.  Yuck Yuck Guffaw.  Judy Martz joked that her husband never beat her, but then she didn't give him reason to.  Here in Montana we have little use for vilifying Muslims or 'wetbacks', so I guess teh GEY will have to do; well, them and that boy in the White House.  That tribalistic antipathy to 'the other' is wide spread.  It's obscene, I'll grant you that a hundred times over.  But it isn't as focused as you portray.  And it'd probably be more dangerous if it were.

You're right (0.00 / 0)
and we've still got work to do there, too. I wanted to contrast the difference between almost any other population with LGBT's, and I know the Native racism that exists here, I just thought it was less rampant.
My apologies.

You do not, nor likely ever will, have a reason to apologize to me.  I'm kind of an asshole.  Just not the kind who's an asshole to you, I hope.

They need courage? (0.00 / 0)

Courage for what?

To grant you special rights or victim status?

Tell you what - as soon as I get special rights I'll start campaigning for yours.

Snarky (0.00 / 0)
...but let's be honest, "special rights" is just code for "I don't agree with your position/point of view  and you're inferior".
The phrase doesn't allow for dialog, reasonable agreement on human rights or meaningful attempts at understanding- which is what I'm asking for.
It's simply dismissive, arrogant and patronizing.
I'm not asking to be labeled a victim or "special". I'm asking to have my beliefs and experience respected. That's all.

I just want to be able to live my life without fearing for it.

Nope - (1.00 / 1)

Special rights are what they're talking about when they start referring to hate crimes.

I'm a Sales Rep - if somebody decides to belt me, and I don't pummel them, it's assault. But if I were a (fill in box with 'protected class' group) it would be an extra crime.

As I said, as soon as Sales Reps get special rights, I'm all aboard with yours.

If you fear for your life, buy yourself a pistol or a revolver, and learn how to use it. If you buy the ammo I'll even show you how.

And your mothers advice about staying out of the bad parts of town were not a bad idea either.

More laws won't protect either one of us.

Sorry, Eric, your argument fails the smell test (0.00 / 0)
Salesmen aren't denied housing, jobs or basic services because they are salesmen. Gays often are. You don't have to hide that you are a salesman for fear of being physically assaulted. Gays often do. Your rant about "special rights" is just that - a rant - and it ignores the simple fact that if you are gay, you are a target for every homophobe in the area. If you honestly believe that gays are currently offered the same rights you have as salesman, you are even more deluded than I think you are.

don't worry, Coobs... (0.00 / 0)
...you're protected under hate crimes, too. if someone kicks your ass b/c you're straight or white, you get the same protection from hate crimes laws!

whatever...i realize the point here isn't to have a dialog, but to try out the usu. Beckian talking points.

No - (0.00 / 0)

My argument is valid.

Housing discrimination?  Job Discrimination?

I've filled out a considerable number of applications over the last 30 years, and never once have I been asked a question about my sexuality on one.

In fact I believe it's already illegal to do so.

I've never dragged my wife and kids to an interview either, so the companies I worked for really didn't know if I was a homo, did they?

But they hired me.

Suppose I had looked them in the eye, with the attitude of the militant gay and proclaimed that I was a gay man -

they probably wouldn't have hired me on account of the attitude, would they?

Maybe some more laws wopuld change that attitude?

I doubt it.

Eirc, I really ask. (0.00 / 0)
Eric, give me your BEST definition of a "militant" gay. I'm serious here.  If this allen-goulash woman is ready for a "war" with gays, I'd at LEAST like to be able to recongnize the combatants in the coming conflict!  I can see what goulash is.  She's a chubby, flabby, bleachy blond whose looks are indicative of a certain IQ.  So, she's a representative of the anti-gay army.  But WHAT does a militant homo look like?  Because for the life of me I've never MET one!  Help me out here, Eric.  I'm asking you because you seem to be an expert on homo militarism!  Or are you just spouting nonsense and hoping that no one will notice?  Got  pics?

You know what I mean Larry -

Here's a link to just one of their websites - enjoy -

hm... (0.00 / 0)
...can't find any element of militarism here. Help us out, man! Where are the guns and the talk about torturing and lynching straight people?

[ Parent ]
I got an idea - (0.00 / 0)

Rather than link to 100 websites, maybe we should petition The Great Leader to have a BEER SUMMIT with a couple of Gay guys, and all the Dems running for re-election!

I'll bet they could solve the issue right away!

Been there, done that! (0.00 / 0)
Not to dredge up TOO much ancient history, but just WHAT was the faux reporter Gannon/Gukert www.hotmilitarystud.com DOING on those 200 "sleepovers" at the white house when bush was in there?  Kinda REAL creepy if ya know what I mean.  But hey, I've got nothing against gays, just hypocrites. I'm thinkin' that hypocrisy is NOT a Montana value, and I just know how the Pubbies loves them some values!
