Did you have a happy Thankgiving?.... and did you remember "The Great Turkey Pardon" of 2009?

by: Doug Coffin

Sat Nov 27, 2010 at 15:49:05 PM MST

We were careful to pay our respects to the most infamous political event in Thanksgiving history....Sarah's great turkey pardon. Around our table, we were taking bets on whether she'll be the next President of the United States.

First, please recall:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

We had the following scenarios for 2012: 1. Palin gets the GOP nomination and then a resurrected Obama buries her in the General Election. 2. She is leading the GOP primary but Mike Bloomberg jumps in and steals the nomination; and then he goes on to bury the weak incumbent Obama.  3. Bloomberg jumps in as an independent to co-opt a weak Palin and a weak Obama, no one gets 270 electoral votes so the "electors" from the legislative branch choose Bloomberg. It's not impossible, recall that Thomas Jefferson was elected this way. 4. President Palin is elected, highlighting a fundamental flaw in the American system of democracy where voters will choose any idiot who sounds and looks good, regardless of their merits. This isn't impossible either, recall that Reagan got elected this way.

It's rather sad (0.00 / 0)
during this Thanksgiving weekend you take the opportunity to engage in such nonsense and attack President Reagan as an idiot.  Some of us gave thanks that the world not blown itself up yet.  Perhaps Reagan's letter to Breshnev had something to do with it.

Well........... (0.00 / 0)
Ok....I'll give some ground here. Reagan wasn't a COMPLETE idiot like Sister Sarah (and her two mules).

What sort of an idiot does your insulting nonsense make you?  On an unrelated topic, you interjected that you have a Phd. I guess from your display of insight it truly means piled higher and deeper.

I couldn't imagine Obama ever penning a letter in his own hand like Reagan did on such a weighty topic, unless of course TOTUS ghost wrote it for him first.

Debunking the Myths of Reaganomics and modern conservatism (0.00 / 0)
The reality is that Reagan really wasn't that much of an idiot, but the people who voted for him and bought into the myths of his brand of modern "conservatism" are.

This blog posting: http://mises.org/daily/1544 by Murray Rothbard "The Myths of Reaganomics" was written in 2004. It really does the best job of pointing out the realities and  behind conservative policy. First, Reagan never truly cut taxes, he increased government spending, increased the overall size of government and he exploded the debt. GW Bush was very mush the same. Indeed, the current "Bush Tax Cuts" are strikingly similar to Regans cuts of '81 and '86 where the top brackets benefited and the middle class got screwed. It is no accident that income distributions are skewed to the wealthy and the plight of the middle class since 1980 have followed. There are other factors, but conservative tax policy has a lot to dd with that.

Had Obama had the courage and wisdom, he should have exploded these myths at the outset of his presidency similar to GHW Bush turning "liberal" into a dirty word (kudos to evil genius Lee Atwater). By not doing so Obama empowered his political opposition and set the stage for the 2010 election debacle.

Still at it huh? (0.00 / 0)
Using Thanksgiving remembrance as a platform for gratuitous insults against Reagan.  Again I ask what sort of person does that make you?

I won't argue with your analysis that Obama lacks courage and wisdom (57 states and all).  He failed to meet with Mitch McConnell for 18 months. He has snubbed at least one head of state. Obama is now reaping the benefits of his arrogance... and his debacle over heath care.  This is followed by his TSA's 'grope a dope' and now the seizing of internet domain names without any due process at all.  Unlike Reagan, his wounds are largely self-inflicted.

Perhaps in a few years around a Thanksgiving table we will still be able to give thanks that the world has not blown itself up, and that we have a new president that has the confidence of our nation.

And just who might that be? (0.00 / 0)
"a new president that has the confidence of our nation"

You honestly believe that in this era of hyper-partisanship with the best Congress money can buy that any president (or Congress for that matter) would have the confidence of the nation?

Maybe only if you define "our nation" as being to the right of the center. And the president was another Reagan. And if you truly think that you can speak for "our nation" in totality, just what person do you think would gain all of our confidence, with your new-found wisdom of what the left wants?

Um, as to "Using Thanksgiving remembrance as a platform for gratuitous insults", you obviously don't recognize snark when you see it.

Methinks you are far too easily offended these days, Craig.  I detect some vestiges of the moral minority leaking out.  Whaddup wit dat?

Actually, the fundamental flaw (0.00 / 0)
was uncovered after the 2000 election, where an aggressive legal campaign, and strategic post election maneuverings gave the election to Bush--who lost the popular vote--with a 5-4 vote in the SCOTUS; the 5-4 SCOTUS vote being a substitute for a legitimate recount in Florida.

Look to republicans to repeat the maneuver if necessary, and create a scenario where they can let the activist conservative Justices pick yet another loser (literally).

But I still think there is a dark horse candidate out there. Given that unemployment is predicted to stay where it is all year, some dem will need to come out of the woodwork and primary Obama by the end of the summer. I don't know how that can be avoided.

So I put my vote in the poll at "None of the above" and we'll see who comes out of the woodwork for the dems. How about a Hilary Clinton vs. Sarah Palin election (even though Clinton says she's net going to do it, I bet she'd do it if drafted)?  Not out of the equation. Or Mitt Romney vs. Howard Dean?

Speculate away. Nothing would be more boring or predictable than Mitt Romney vs. Obama with a 10% unemployment rate ("Yes we can [if reelected]" vs. "No you didn't [no more chances]"). If republicans were smart, they'd coalesce behind Romney, and start running in January. No contest.

Coalescence (0.00 / 0)
I'm not sure that the tea-party GOP will go with Mitt...... a lot depends on Obama's ability to rebuild his base...they're awful mad at him right now.

Idiots? (0.00 / 0)

The States who voted for The Great Leader elected an empty suit who can't seem to find his ass with both hands -

Montana was smart enough to not go for Obama at least.

In the last election, Obama was not just crushed, he was disowned.

Just two years ago Obama was hailed as the next FDR, or a 21st century Abraham Lincoln, and look where his is now.

His domestic agenda is dead.

His legislative 'accomplishments' will soon be disarmed or unraveled.

His latest trip to India was embarassing - as he dragged his teleprompter in front of Indian lawmakers -

Tell me more about lawmakers who are idiots - LOL

Idiot? (4.00 / 1)
"The States who voted for The Great Leader elected an empty suit who can't seem to find his ass with both hands"

Are you talking about the election of 2000, when the SCOTUS appointed Bush? Actually, Bush was an emperor who wore no clothes, as he was as illegitimate a president as could be.

"In the last election, Obama was not just crushed, he was disowned"

I wasn't aware that Obama was on any ballot ticket, Coobs. You really should think a bit before you spout.

"Just two years ago Obama was hailed as the next FDR, or a 21st century Abraham Lincoln"

Uh, no. He wasn't. He hadn't even taken office yet. And be that as it may, a president's legacy is never settled until many years after he has left office. Even if some folks want to prematurely ejaculate about it.

"His domestic agenda is dead"

It's nice that you conservative tea baggers have assured that he will fail. Because as the fate of the presidency goes, so goes the fate of the country. Bush on the other hand, at least failed on his own, and with the support of the opposition party in Congress.

Remember all that hoopla from the right about "you're either with us or you're with the terrorists?" I guess the right is with the terrorists now: the economic terrorists.

"His legislative 'accomplishments' will soon be disarmed or unraveled"

The president isn't a legislator. The "legislative 'accomplishments'" of which you speak belong to Pelosi and Reid and Congress. You really need a refresher civics course on how government works (or doesn't), Coobs.

"His latest trip to India was embarassing - as he dragged his teleprompter in front of Indian lawmakers"

You're easily embarrassed Coobs. At least this president doesn't mangle the English language, or fondle other heads of state while abroad. Remember the Merkle "massage"? Now that was embarrassing. How about Bush's trying to walk our a locked door in China? His pappy's puking on the Japanese Prime MInister? Embarrassing. Clinton caught with his pants down in the Oval office? Embarrassing. Reagan's Alzheimer's? Sad, but embarrassing. Carter admitting to wet dreams ("lusting in my heart...")? Embarrassing. Obama using a teleprompter? Wha...???

"Tell me more about lawmakers who are idiots"

Ok. Let's start with the right's darling, Tom DeLay. Went from being House Majority Leader just 5 years ago to looking at life in prison today for being corrupt. Still maintains his innocence even though he was convicted by a jury of his peers.

That's pretty idiotic. Just like most everything you spout here.

You really need to give up the thumb-capping, and have your orgasm about the last election and get it over with. Time to smoke a cigarette and think about how you're going to start white-washing your next president and Congress. Because you guys got nothing. It was another 8 years of failed presidency and a complicit Congress that got us to where we are. And a bunch of tea baggers have no idea how to govern and meet the problems of this country and world. Ideology über alles.

Thanks JC (0.00 / 0)

I was going to let you off the hook about what a moron Obama is, but you asked for it - here's a small sample;

May 9, 2008
"It is wonderful to be back in Oregon," Obama said. "Over the last 15 months, we've traveled to every corner of the United States. I've now been in 57 states? I think one left to go. Alaska and Hawaii, I was not allowed to go to even though I really wanted to visit, but my staff would not justify it."

(There's a total of 50 states, maybe Obama should take the 4th grade over again)

April 27, 2010
"So the challenge we have now is how do we set up a system where, yes, we're welcoming new people to our country, which by the way makes us stronger. One of the things that is a huge advantage for America compared to countries like Europe is, actually, we're constantly replenishing ourselves with hungry, driven people who are coming here, and they want to work, and they start a business, and our population is younger and more dynamic, and that's a good thing!"

(Europe is a continent - maybe Obama should buy a globe)

July 23, 2008
"Just this past week, we passed out of the out of the U.S. Senate Banking Committee - which is my committee - a bill to call for divestment from Iran as way of ratcheting up the pressure to ensure that they don't obtain a nuclear weapon,"

(Obama was never on that committee - man, what a memory!)

July 22,2008
Let me be absolutely clear. Israel is a strong friend of Israel's. It will be a strong friend of Israel's under a McCain...administration. It will be a strong friend of Israel's under an Obama administration. So that policy is not going to change.

(Israel is a friend to Israel? Is he sure?)

Tell me JC - how many more would you like?

Got an appetite?

before you gloat too much there eric (0.00 / 0)
you better keep one eye out for the republicans in your own party who feel betrayed by their leaders. independents will gain recruits from both of the shrinking parties. 2012 isn't very far away, and with the utter failure of bush and obama i think the american people will finally be ready to take a look at independents in many races.
