Right-wing radio personality/shock jock(and former GOP staffer) Aaron Flint is taking, according to him, a "tongue in cheek" look at the tragedy in Arizona on Twitter.

But what this reminded me of was Flint's earlier mockery of the presence of law enforcement at congressional events here in Montana.  From his blog:

No mention, of course, by the New York Times during their "he's a well grounded man" piece of the fact that the Senator felt he couldn't even hold an invite-only meeting in towns like Scobey and Glasgow without inviting the presence of armed guards. LINK

Or...

Especially considering the fact that the last time Tester showed up in Daniels County- he held an invite only meeting in which his staff requested the presence of law enforcement. LINK

There are other examples on his blog.

I'm glad that Tester, on the other hand, is taking the high road and worrying about us, his constituents.  In this morning's Billings Gazette: "The senator said he wanted people attending his public events to be safe."

The only way to curb this type of rhetoric, to change the discourse in our country, is to hold those making outlandish comments accountable. Contact Flint's boss at the Northern News Network, State Senator Taylor Brown at the state capitol: (406) 444-4800.

Because words matter.

Protecting the public vs hiding from the public (0.00 / 0)
Rob

Requesting law enforcement to protect the public is one thing; requesting law enforcement to hide from the public and keep the public out is quite another.  The latter is exactly what Senator Tester did in towns like Glasgow, Scobey, and others. Invite-only meetings, failing to publicize supposed townhall meetings on health care, forcing meeting participants to submit health care questions in advance: this isn't a Senator holding public meetings who merely wanted to "protect the public" and it is extremely disingenuous to suggest as much on the part of the Senator and his flacks.

Tongue in cheek means- take it with a grain of salt.  While your buddies on the left were trying to capitalize on a horrific tragedy and pin the blame on talk radio, Tea Partiers and others- accounts from folks who knew him described him as a crazed "left-wing pothead."  So my point was: do we blame Marijuana for the shootings?  No, we don't do that either.  That is hardly joking about the shootings as you might falsely suggest.

To the original point- I would encourage all to read my full post here http://www.northernbroadcastin...

If Rob Kailey actually listened to our talk show- he would know that I also quoted one of his darlings (or at least Matt Singer's): Ezra Klein from The Washington Post...who feared that politicians would begin rope lining themselves off from the public in the name of security.

Contrast Senator Tester's actions to hide from the public with Governor Schweitzer.  Yes, the Governor has security with him wherever he goes:  but he also isn't afraid to take tough questions, isn't afraid to hold townhall meetings (he even held one in Washington State on the coal port), and we enjoy having him as a guest on our statewide talk show as well.  He's been on at least 3 times in my first year and a half doing the show. (four if you count the interview from Washington State)

And MT Cowgirl wonders why Gov Schweitzer has held approval ratings in the 60's?  Senator Tester should take note.

Rob,

My apologies buddy- I saw your name...missed the "promoted by."  Who wrote the original post?

By the way- next time you're in the Billings area- let me buy you a beer.

Thanks,

Aaron Flint

By the way- if you want video of the interaction (0.00 / 0)
Here's a link at KTVQ.com where Democratic politico Ray Tracy and I mixed it up on the air Wednesday morning.  I mentioned a similar statement toward the end of the clip.
