Links, Feel The Hate Edition

by: Rob Kailey

Fri Mar 11, 2011 at 15:05:11 PM MST

Larry Kralj and I don't always agree on strategy, process, focus, presentation or outcome.  But one thing we absolutely see eye-to-eye on is motivation.  If we are at all honest as liberals, progressives and/or Democrats, then there must come an admission that our efforts are not only to foster world peace, harmony and lambs lying with lions.  There are simply people out there whose greatest desire is to drag our happy asses to hell.  I dedicate this post of links to the endeavor such that maybe most all of us can agree why we fight.

Larry just posted a diary not too long ago.  I'm not going to elevate it directly to the front because it is essentially just a link to a book, a 372 page book.  It's in PDF format, so I suggest it be downloaded and read at whatever leisure you find.  The title of the book is "The Nazi Hydra In America".  I have encountered it before, and I support Larry in giving it a wider promotion.

Duganz, at 4 & 20 Blackbirds, exposes Jeff Laszloffy of the Montana Family Foundation for the hateful man he is.  Laszloffy attempts to use the Bible to deliberately and directly attack one of the Montana InterWeb's greatest friends and allies, Jamee Greer.

Lizard, at 4 & 20 Blackbirds, exposes the efforts in Michigan to install an authoritarian regime.  Are we getting the idea that these people hate us yet?

problembear, you know the drill, shows us what I, David Neiwert and many others have been saying for some time. Hate is right here in Montana, and it's growing. What I truly appreciate about problembear's post is that he states the obvious.  One needn't be embarrassed and should be pissed off when pointing out the truth of one's assertions concerning those who hate.  Many on our side are acting like living in this country is some kind of moderated behavior video game.  The opposition is acting like this is Grand Theft Country.  I'm of the opinion that maybe we need to get over the idea that this is some kind of video game.

Still don't believe that the right hates you?  August Pollack spells it out very explicitly.  They Hate You.

One of the things I keep repeating over and over again is how everyone needs to understand that Republicans enjoy hurting other people. More often than not it's simply how much they enjoy doing things that piss off liberals or make ideological opponents angry but at the core of it, they don't care if it's actual physical suffering. It amuses them. Sometime they're honest about it and sometimes they lie and make cutesy little winks--that's honestly why so many teabaggers love Sarah Palin; not because they actually support a fraction of her incoherent babble but because she makes them feel like it's okay to be mean and bitchy and awful to people if you're the one doing it.

...

Half of Americans who vote, vote for people who hate Americans. When we are open about this factoid, things can start to change.

That was actually most of Pollack's post.  I was tempted to post the whole thing, because his middle paragraph deals with exactly why they hate you.  Anybody ever see the movie Mississippi Burning?  Gene Hackman tells a story about his father and a black neighbor's mule.  If you don't know what I'm talking about, that's fine.  But the moral of his story is very simple:  If you want to feel better about being kicked down, then kick someone else down farther.  That's hate, my good friends.

Perhaps you're still not convinced. Perhaps you want a more analytic view of the situation.  Fine.  Here it is.  Notice the very specific efforts that are being taken to hurt you and I and the middle class and women and ...

If you need an example, look no further than here.  We are becoming slaves, highly profitable slaves, right at the root of our existence.  To even have our progeny born requires our service to profit.

They have the tools to hurt you, and they're giving those tools a workout.  Our ability to fight back is at best weak.  Our national production is geared only towards mistake and violence.  And our press celebrates that.

So.  How do we fight back?  I wish I had a clue.  Others will tell you to organize!  I think that's a hella great idea.  But it's not certain.  See, I'm a process guy, not a theoretician.  So I can't paint a path out of this malaise, but I can certainly identify how to make it worse.  This is how.  We stand 4 Senators and one President away from giving up the whole ball of wax to those who hate us.

There's an idiot out there in InterWeb land who really doesn't like me.  He posted some nonsense about how anything these GOoPer goons, who really hate us, do can't be undone after we all learn our progressive lesson at the feet of Ralph Nader, presumably. He's wrong.  There are websites and people out there who recognize that damage to individuals can't be "undone".  I'll cast my lot with those folk, if'n you don't mind.

I like what John Dean says. (0.00 / 0)

(SNIP)

I started my inquiry in the mid-1990s, after a series of conversations with Goldwater, whom I had known for more than 40 years. Goldwater was also mystified (when not miffed) by the direction of today's professed conservatives -- their growing incivility, pugnacious attitudes, and arrogant and antagonistic style, along with a narrow outlook intolerant of those who challenge their thinking. He worried that the Republican Party had sold its soul to Christian fundamentalists, whose divisive social values would polarize the nation. From those conversations, Goldwater and I planned to study why these people behave as they do, and to author a book laying out what we found. Sadly, the senator's declining health soon precluded his continuing on the project, so I put it on the shelf. But I kept digging until I found some answers, and here are my thoughts.

For almost half a century, social scientists have been exploring authoritarianism. We do not typically associate authoritarianism with our democracy, but as I discovered while examining decades of empirical research, we ignore some findings at our risk. Unfortunately, the social scientists who have studied these issues report their findings in monographs and professional journals written for their peers, not for general readers. With the help of a leading researcher and others, I waded into this massive body of work.

What I found provided a personal epiphany. Authoritarian conservatives are, as a researcher told me, ``enemies of freedom, antidemocratic, antiequality, highly prejudiced, mean-spirited, power hungry, Machiavellian and amoral." And that's not just his view. To the contrary, this is how these people have consistently described themselves when being anonymously tested, by the tens of thousands over the past several decades.

Authoritarianism's impact on contemporary conservatism is beyond question. Because this impact is still growing and has troubling (if not actually evil) implications, I hope that social scientists will begin to write about this issue for general readers. It is long past time to bring the telling results of their empirical work into the public square and to the attention of American voters. No less than the health of our democracy may depend on this being done. We need to stop thinking we are dealing with traditional conservatives on the modern stage, and instead recognize that they've often been supplanted by authoritarians.

John W. Dean, former Nixon White House counsel, just published his seventh nonfiction book, Conservatives Without Conscience.

News? (0.00 / 0)
Rob - Kind of surprised that it takes some outside sources to verify that the far right hates everybody who isn't far right.  But hey, maybe somebody could tell the guy in the White House that "bipartisan cooperation" just isn't the way the Rs roll.  When they have the votes, they move THEIR agenda and you won't hear them talking about, or worried over, what Democrats think.  It's too late, of course, for Obama and the Dems -- they blew their opportunity with congressional majorities in both chambers and the White House while they were trying to sing Kumbaya with the people who hate them.  Now they're just playing defense as they scuttle further and further to the right in a delusional attempt to somehow "capture" the middle.  Sigh.

Some get it (0.00 / 0)
Some don't, George.  This post wasn't written for you and I who accept right-wing hatred as an axiom of existence.  The White House decidedly does not get it.  I would argue that many many progressives didn't get it before Wisconsin.  Because it isn't just 'the far right'.

The leftward themes right now are "Republican over-reach" and "Voter backlash".  I remain pessimistic that those will have any real effect on organizing or voting, unless it is coupled with other frames as well.  One frame that needs to perish quickly is that "both parties are the same".  No, they're really not.  They both follow the power of money.  But the Democrats haven't gone out of their way to hurt us (the middle class, the poor, women, minorities ...)  Perhaps, and I think, it's because they too are blind to the fact that our ruling oligarchs really hate us.  The Nelsons and LIEbermans will get their money as long as they are useful.

But I ask you this.  It's very easy to point out that Obama's agenda has been thwarted at all levels.  It's an easy assumption that Democrats in Congress and the White House itself want it that way.  How much money went into defeating all of those agenda items?  Why is it easier to assume that Democrats are the problem than to face that the Bankers, the Kochs, the Waltons - the people who hate us - are the problem and for the most part, they aren't bankrolling Democrats?  They are bankrolling the far right.  So we rail against being manipulated into voting for the lesser of two evils, and take a stand against doing that.  The Democrats are, as Hooami29 would say, whiners". But here's the question.  Who really hates you?

What a Bunch of Horseshit (0.00 / 0)
So, some people don't like you and some of them really don't like you, and some of the may even hate you? So what? There's no place of power in that. The only thing anyone can hear over the litany of "They hate me," are the whines of powerlessness.

Go organize. Go create the narrative that overcomes the hate. Go be good in the world. Give kindness a chance to be seen and heard. Go fight for the Jon Testers and Al Frankens. AND, for God's sake give some MONEY to the causes you support. One of the big reasons that the Neandrathals are winning is because they fund they causes they believe in, while liberals are frequently too cheap to fund the vehicles that support their beliefs. (Two liberal radio stations have gove off the air in Missoula partially  because all those great liberals couldn't put up bucks for advertising to keep them here.)

KOCH!  Truth is, Hooey, that a lot of lefties like myself are FLAT FRIGGIN' BROKE!  While we were out using our talents to make the world a better place, the Kocks were amassing a HUGE warchest through corruption and crimnal activity, including an extra nine billion in the last couple'a years, to institute fascism in this country!  We can't outspend them.  If I could, I would.

You see, Hooey, some of us from the sixties really didn't place much value on money.  And we still don't.  I guess I kinda miss the point of your post.  My point is that unLESS you have forty-five billion dollars like the Kochs, (inherited from their daddy, Stalin's good buddy) you AIN'T gonna reach parity with their depravity!

And couple that with their evil influence that has infiltrated the goverment since the fifties to benefit EXCLUSIVELY guys like the Kocks, and we can't even begin to compete.  Oh, and don't EVEN get me started on Murdoch!

The reality is that we CAN'T  compete with their money OR influence!  That's not whining.  The game is fixed, the deck is stacked.

Now, do we quit?  Oh HELL no.  We simply must view our  options realistically.

So, What are You Doing Besides Whining? (0.00 / 0)
I've never made much money either, but part of what I've made has always gone to political candidates, to advertising and to media efforts to get the word out there, since I figure I've got to have a stake in the game if I want different results. If every progressive gave only $100 a year to political causes, we'd pull in $2 billion a year in funding and we wouldn't be getting our teeth kicked in like we did in 2010.

Oh, and I have three other websites. The one mentioned here got given to someone else, so I can't maintain it even if I'd want to.

Here's one. http://www.ADebtIsATax.com It's even got a bumper sticker. In the last third of a century (through 2010), no Republican president has ever come within $200 billion dollars of balancing the U.S. budget(adjusted to 2010 dollars), and the Republican presidents have created over $9.1 trillion in debt. Democratic presidents, OTOH, have created only $2.1 trillion in debt in that time, and have balanced the budget 5 out of 14 years. Pretty boring data, huh? Did you know that 39% of the voters in 2010 voted out of their concern for excessive debt and they voted 34% in favor of Republicans?

Howard Dean was the first mainstream politician I've heard use this meme. He used it last week on Lawrence O'Donnell when he said. "You can't trust Republians with your money. They haven't balanced a budget in fifty years." That's what we need to be saying. Short and sweet.

You can't trust Republicans with your money.

Republicans only cut the Middle Class.

Dean is a great model for progressives. BTW, Rahm Emanuel and James Carville both HATE Howard Dean, but, as near as I can tell, it has slowed him down for about zero seconds in his life and his effort to fight for the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party, and he pulled the ultimate political jiu-jitsu when he won the DNC chair in 2005 after his media-manipulated disaster in the 2004 primaries.

"Winston Churchill said, "You have enemies? Good. That means you have stood up for something, sometime."

Again, the refrain that bigots and racists hate us simply means we're doing our job--and a few Republicans do, but many are so scared now by Faux News that they don't know what to think. There are some righties I find pretty unpleasant, but so what? My job's to figure out how to keep them as far from the levers of power as possible. The only question's how we make sure that "being hated" doesn't get in the way of being loving, being of service, talking truth to power and fighting on.

I think that I'm gonna have to write a bio for every newbie that shows up.  Sorry, but I don't play that game.  Leave your ego, arrogance, and lectures at the door, dude.  That would be a great place to start.  I'm thinkin'  two things at this point, but please don't be offended.

One, you're quite young.  And two, you're a transplant from somewhere else.  I  don't hold that against you, but you really should  know whom you're  criticizing before  getting too smug.  The folks that post here are the real deal.  And I'm guessin' that you're  not,  at least  quite yet.  Peace, bro.

Great call. (0.00 / 0)
In my 50s. Born in Missoula. UM grad. Think this "they hate us" meme is self defeating, useless, self indulgent and makes progressives sound like a bunch of wusses.

It reminds me of the opposite side of Sally Field's "you love me. You really love me." It's still all about what you see in the mirror.

Used to really like this site when Matt ran it.

Hey, Pollyanna meets Hitler!  Still livin' in a bus, are ya?  And how's  that pony tail doin'?

Keep "gettin' the word out",  Hooey.  You've obviously been very successful judging by the make up of our current legislature!  And that bumper sticker idea.  Wow!  Just wow!  I think you got the Koch brothers REAL scared!

Fight on, Hooey.  Fight on, brave soldier! Fight the good fight!  You're an army of one!

Too funny.

So what? There's no place of power in that. The only thing anyone can hear over the litany of "They hate me," are the whines of powerlessness.

Excuse me but you appear to have missed a point as subtle as a club to the head.  This point is about motivation.  The one's who hate you are motivated.  The hated are, to date, not. And the haters winning.  If you had bothered to follow the links you might have realized that no one here is giving a shit if the haters think we're whining.  They think we're powerless anyway.

Many around here are interested in motivating the hated with some clarity of the depth of the situation.  Problembear is decidedly good at that.  But here comes you to agree with the haters that recognizing reality is just whining.  To you, we shouldn't speak the truth because it's a "litany" of "powerlessness".  No doubts you agree that we recognize it, but we just can't say it.  If the worst consequence of speaking that truth is that you get offended, I guess I can live with that.  From the tenor of the comments, it appears that most of the rest of us can as well.

In simple truth, our objectives are likely the same.  I was a large personal donor to Jon Tester in 2006 and likely will be again, though money is tight exactly as Larry pointed out.  I'm uncertain exactly why you would appear to be going out of your way to insult allies, but perhaps it's simply that you don't grasp the gravity of the situation.  If that's the case, then you need this post most of all.

A little history. (0.00 / 0)
When I see the Koch brothers basically OWNING the republican party, I seethe with anger.  For I have NEVER forgotten the events of history.  I take it personally.

The Koch brothers canNOT be seperated from the John Birch Society, one of the most EVIL groups to have ever been formed in our great country.  And don't be fooled, what we are seeing now is John Birch AMERICA!  I simply cannot abide that.

Although I cannot prove it YET, I'm am absolutley certain that the no good Koch's daddy, co-founder of the John Birch society, was absolutely COMPLICIT in the assassination of John Kennedy!  Let there be no doubt.  Daddy Koch WANTED John Kennedy DEAD!f  That is a given.  That is undisputable.

And thus, our country had its first coup, a coup from which we never recovered.  After that, the CIA started immediately filling the ranks of our government with their handpicked toadies, including FIVE of the nine secretaries of state RIGHT OUTTA THE F*CKIN' CIA!  How bizarre is that?

As I mentioned, I take this recent assualt on our democracy quite personally.  For you see, I remember John Kennedy quite well.  My parents met him of four different occasions.  And we still have a autograph from Bobby Kennedy.  As I watch the Koch brothers in the news, there is not a DAY that goes by that I don't SEETHE with anger and revenge.  They MUST be held accountable!

These dirty bastard Birchers and their CIA operatives stole our country from us once when I was too young to do anything about it.  I'll rot in HELL before I allow them to do it againg without one HELLuva fight!

We would be living in a far different country, and a far better world had the dirty bastards not killed Kennedy and stolen our country.  They are sick, evil,  sociopathic bastards who MUST be seen for what they are.  The time for mincing words is over.  INFORM yourselves our our history.  Why?  Because it's about to happen again!

THIS is the Koch family legacy!

http://www.jfk.org/go/collecti...

Real nice folks, huh?  Ther DADDY, Fred Koch, was responsible for these fliers.  And now, they're  back.  Comin' after the darky in the White House and any remenants of democracy that might be left.   What are you gonna do about it?  I KNOW what I'm  gonna do.

We are legion

We don't forget

We don't forgive

EXPECT  us

Are ye WITH me?  Time for some criminals to be held accountable.

p.s. (0.00 / 0)
I know it's hard for the younger readers to understand my rage.  But they MUST understand that it's THEIR future that was stolen too!  Our country was NOT always the giant shithole that we have now.  People like the Kochs are responsible. Here, watch this.  I can't watch it too often.  I break down.

Edwin Walker in Dallas

"In 1975 Harry Dean claimed he had been an undercover agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. In 1962 he infiltrated the John Birch Society. He later reported that Walker and John Rousselot had hired two gunman, Eladio del Valle and Loran Hall, to kill President John F. Kennedy. However, Dean was unable to provide any evidence to back up his claim"

Maybe not.  But we KNOW that the Koch's dadday, Fred, was all  for it.

Here ya go. The Kocks on parade. (0.00 / 0)
