SB 423, Eviscerated

by: Rob Kailey

Wed Apr 20, 2011 at 15:03:00 PM MST

In the promotion of the diary yesterday, I mentioned the good work of Montanafesto concerning the medical marijuana issue.  Today, and how fitting that it comes on 4/20, they offer this:

Montana's SB 423: GOP Plan To Purge The "Scourge".

The post hits the highlights head on.  SB 423 is anti-patient, it is anti-jobs, it is anti-capitalism, and it is hypocritical.

Today, SB 423 got it's hearing in Free Committee forum.  The committee report has been passed on.  If you'd like to know how it reads at this point, here is the text.  Montanafesto is correct.  SB 423 is little more than a repeal of the voter actions in favoring medical marijuana.

Where it's at now is this.  The Republican control of the Mt legislature is tired from their 3 day work week, coming off their earlier vacation last weekend, so they're going to take another.  No action will be taken before Tuesday of next week.  That still gives you, good reader, plenty of time to call your Republican Congress people, and Larry Jent, and let them know that we want the needs of Montanans met.  We don't want their pseudo-religious posturing over devil weed getting in the way of real needs.

pretty obvious by now that the MTGOP is in complete chaos (0.00 / 0)
last week's recess didn't help them either. they are in complete disarray at this point. milburn looks to be stunned. i've seen steers being slaughtered and that is the look.

that veto brand has them all spooked.

i think brian is pouring charcoal into his BBQ and taking the steel to his butcher knife..... gotta let them hang for awhile first though for the best flavor. five days in the cooler should be about right.

I hope that you are correct, problembear..... (0.00 / 0)
Pretty sure the GOP will be using the free time not to vacation but to conduct shady backroom deals without the shackles of transparency.  Don't waste your time calling Larry Jent- he is absolutely hopeless.  He seems to have a very personal connection to marijuana.  I guess he felt he had nothing to lose by ignoring the constituents of his cannabis-friendly district since he terms out in 2014. In his "bipartisan" editorial with Sen Hutton, he says
"Since our priority is to grow jobs, the real issue is respect for the rule of law."
Maybe I'm just a bit slow, but that sentence makes no sense.

I'm SO tired of legislators telling me that "Montanans didn't vote for this." I'm sick of the weak arguments they use to justify overturning a citizen's initiative, and I'm especially tired of the hypocrisy.  Using the federal Controlled Substances Act as a justification would only be effective, although weakly so, if the same people weren't trying to assert their tenth amendment rights on issues like healthcare reform, wolves and firearms.  They are rather selective in their exploitation of the Constitution- then again, they seem to be confused about their power too.... considering proposed legislation to remove the United States from the UN.

Excellent national op-ed on SB 423, "pretend" medical marijuana bill (0.00 / 0)
Check out this excellent summary by a former Montana legislator:

http://www.alternet.org/story/...

Soon they'll be requiring (0.00 / 0)
That "Reefer Madness" be shown in all schools. That (accidentally hilarious) movie best reflects their views on the evil weed.

It appears that Reefer Madness (0.00 / 0)
is the handbook of the puritanical prohibitionists.  Rep McGillvray even said at a recent fundraiser that Montana was wasting money on meth prevention because the real problem in Montana is medical marijuana.  The GOP's Enemy Number One....
