"Fair and Balanced" is supposedly a good thing?

I don't disagree with Pogie on very much at all.  Yet, today I find myself in that very unenviable position.

Jenna Cederberg of the Missoulian penned an article about the newest darling of the Montana online right, Treasure State Politics. (Sorry, Andy.)  Pogie posted on the Twitter that he was uncomfortable with the fact that Jenna did not also mention, promote or show the opposition to TSP being the liberal Montana Missoula blogs, most notably 4 & 20.

Pogie tweets:

Just wondering if the @missoulian has ever written a feature about its good local blog?

The "good" is questionable, but obviously the Missoulian did write a feature about a local blog.

Pogie continues:

@jennacederberg Confused about your story today about TSP. Seems odd not to mention a single liberal Missoula blog in the piece.

Why?  The opposition to TSP is not in Missoula.  It's made very clear in the article that TSP stands in opposition to the Montana Cowgirl Blog.  Only in the FOX-newsian sense would it make any difference to set a false opposition between TSP and 4 & 20 Blackbirds, or other Missoula blog.

When Jenna asked if Pogie was confused or disappointed, Pogie's response was:

@jennacederberg Maybe I'll settle on surprised. :) 4and20 blackbirds, which is also local to MSO, has so much more traffic and influence.

The traffic part remains open to question, and completely beside the point.  That reminds me of all the arguments had in the Montana online about how most comments means most traffic and import, all of which is really kind of crap.  The influence part is actually significant, but it was dealt with in the article itself:

"In Montana it's very difficult (to keep a conservative blog) because we have blogs like Montana Cowgirl," James said. That anonymously written blog has previously been traced to the Capitol complex computer system, but the governor's office has denied any knowledge of the blogger's identity.

"I mean, how do you compete with insider information by the people that are making the information?" James said. "I think that the true answer to that was that (conservative information on blogs) just wasn't articulated in a manner people wanted to read. I didn't think the arguments had enough beef behind it."

Notice a couple of things.  Jenna supports a narrative that has yet to be proven, and still points to the actual opposition that James is concerned about.  Any call for 'fair and balanced' coverage of blogging that mentions 4 & 20 Black birds' is kind of silly in the venue of which this column is written in.

Let's be clear about a couple of things.  It's not "web log".  It's weblog.  An article about a wingnut blog does not require discussion of every other blog in the same local.  Pointing out that the Montana Cowgirl blog is run anonymously does not favor mention of 4 & 20 Blackbirds when most of those folk also blog anonymously.  They just haven't had the press crawl up their ass quite as much.  "Influence" among bloggers is always open to question, until someone comes up with a metric by which it can be measured.

Well, I read the wingnut blog, and it's exactly.... (0.00 / 0)
what it appears to be.  An amatuerish attempt by some extremely young folks who don't have a clue!   It's pretty  sad and pathetic.   I SERIOUSLY  doubt it will have much readership.  Maybe they can get Dave Budge to spice things up a bit.  Tee hee.  It's definitely budge quality!

There have been some  really well-written righty blogs, and even THEY don't get the readership. Fascism just doesn't lend itself to witticism and good writing.  I mean, just look at the literary quality of their rightwing bible, Asses Plugged!

I like Missoulopalis and Canapropaganda's site.  They are  far superior in quality to this Young Teabagger Blog.  Too bad that James didn't major in history, for he'll SOON be!

Larry, please don't get me wrong. (0.00 / 0)
TSP is fuckin' awful.  That's not the point here.

I understand. (0.00 / 0)
I  was just making an observation.  You see, after the Mizoo write up, I thought that maybe it was something new and fresh and possibly intelligent and well-written.  But boy was I  wrong.  And  they don't even allow comments that haven't been approved.  That takes all the fun out of a blog immediately.  That's what makes Cowgirls  blog so much fun.

I do enjoy the two blogs I mentioned above.  Both Missopolis (sp) and Montafesto are good righty blogs.  I enjoy them for their writing and intelligence.   I used to read Smith's  site all the time until Budge and Natelson took over.  Gregg is an excellent writer and has written some absolutely great stuff in the past.  That's  why I say that this new blog  is simpy pathetic by comparison.  I really should  visit Gregg's site more often.

I personally like Electric City and Montanafesto.  Maybe because both feature writers with opinions that are verboten in mainstream conservative ideology.

Wholey owned subsidiary of the MT GOP (0.00 / 0)
Considering the content and the ads that are on display at TSP it looks like its trying to be a conservative version of MT Cowgirl.  That fact that a college republican that is ensconced in the MT GOP started it gives it inside connections on messaging and attacks that GOP candidates don't want sourced to themselves.

Will it be influential?  Throwing red meat to your base like MT Cowgirl does works very well in terms of setting the tone of the immediate political context.  So I'm sure it will be a focal point for a for political insiders and organizers on the right.

Will it ask questions that are more esoteric and metaphysical in nature like LiTW and 4&20 do?  I doubt it.

It kinda states that in the article. (0.00 / 0)
TSP was set up in rather direct opposition to the Montana Cowgirl Blog.  It will never stand opposed to 4&20, though it may attack it now and again.  It's agenda is purely political pragmatics, just like the Cowgirl.

The right does have it's policy blogs in Montana, but most are not going to embrace their "more esoteric and metaphysical" nature.

Direct opposition maybe - (0.00 / 0)
But I doubt that the blog is run by GOP staffers out of the capitol -

That would be (0.00 / 0)
all two of the GOP staffers in the capitol, Eric?

Some additional comments (0.00 / 0)
First take a look at the photo of this Austin James fellow:
http://missoulian.com/news/loc...
That's one fun-loving dude.  A picture is worth a thousand words.

Second, Pogie raises a legitimate question, and the answer is "no," the Missoulian has never done a profile on Missoula's liberal bloggers.  I don't think we're all that well liked by most in the upper echelons of the daily dead tree,

Finally, I believe progressive contributors to Montana blogs DO have some influence.  Maybe not as much as the bloggers would like but I've seen some evidence: comments on various sites from elected officials, some office holders unwilling to talk in front of bloggers because of what might end up on a site and the occasional politician saying, "you f**king a**hole, I can't believe what I just read at your site."

How many pictures have you seen ... (0.00 / 0)

constipated looking... and evil, like the dick, cheney.  Pink, twisted, ugly, doughy, soft,  sick, evil bastards.  And if I might, I must tell a true story here.

My wife is a nurse.  And as a nurse, she's seen it all.  Well, one night while working the night shift, two of her co-workers, a CNA and another nurse, came to her in an extremely panicked state.  What happened to them was incredible, and very, very interesting.

They had been tending to a dying patient, a no goodnick fellow who had murdered someone.  He had a guard by the door even though the dude was dying.  Well, JUST before this moron passed, these two folks were tending to him.  And here's where it gets really bizarre.

Just before dying, this guy's physiognomy began to change...BEGAN TO CHANGE, into something evil, vile, demonic looking!  Now remember, these are folks who are USED to seeing people die all the time, and they BOTH saw it, and were so frightened by the changes in this guy's appearance that they could not go back into the room!  The CNA ever refused to go back into a dying patient's room ever again after that incident!  Needless to say, they had witnessed something horrific!

Well, I'm not suprised.  You see, sometimes, a person actually GETS the face they deserve!  I would LUV to see the dick, cheney's face upon dying as he meets his Satan!  You can see indications of evil in his face now.  But just imagine when he goes!

So, don't  be too suprised as to how these folks look.  They get the face they deserve.

Conservative propaganda (0.00 / 0)
Sorry, Rob; I realize my comment really has nothing to do with the point of your post, but I have been biting my tongue about this site for months. The first post I read over at TSP- after weeks of enduring their absolutely ENDLESS self-promotion via Twitter and Facebook, was when Jon Tester "ran over" a GOP staffer.  I must have watched the video a dozen times and still, I wasn't able to understand where this "vehicular assault" came in. I don't defend Jon Tester very often, but this sort of tabloid-style journalism doesn't help conservatives in the least.

Here's an example  "

..... Reardon is not only Lynch's successor and the new director of the MT DOT, but he is also a campaign contributor to Attorney General/maybe gubernatorial candidate Bullock.  As our State's chief legal official, Attorney General Bullock, has already violated Montana campaign law, and now it seems that even as he is running his illegal campaign for "a State office"...."

Frankly, I can't stand Bullock and I'd celebrate him losing any election, but Galik dismissed the GOP's complaint against Bullock and to call his campaign illegal is ... questionable, but not surprising.

I've complained about Cowgirl as much as other conservatives, but the site can be entertaining and even informative.  Yes, many of the posts are seriously reaching- like "is Rick Hill a Muslim?", but compared to TSP, I'd take Cowgirl any day.  In fact, I do.  I have visited TSP only a handful of times and was not impressed.

Thanks to you all for the kind words....Montanafesto has come a long way since its creation- nearly a year ago- and we too considered selling ad space at one time, but we decided that the only likely takers would be politicians and canna businesses.  If we were being paid by politicians, it would be difficult to avoid biased posts, there would always be some sort of feeling of obligation and ass-kissing just isn't how we roll.  I'd be shocked if TSP was ever critical of a republican.

TSP bloggers boast constantly of their views and self-promote more than any other site I've seen.  I've seen links to the very same story posted over and over on the twitter and Facebook news feeds.  I've never seen another blog do that- we certainly don't; and we have great consistent readership anyway. I'd applaud the boys for getting in the game, but I've yet to read one original thought over there and the site isn't even entertaining. Sorry boys.
