PhRMA Scared of Jon Tester; Max Gets a Bounce?

by: Matt Singer

Fri Nov 24, 2006 at 11:05:07 AM MST

If you haven't seen it yet, pharmaceutical lobbyists  think Jon Tester "is expected to be a problem." How will Tester pose a problem for these slick lobbyists from one of the most profitable industries in the world? By moving legislation to lower drug costs, saving taxpayers and consumers hundreds of millions of dollars.

It's scandalous, I tell you. Scandalous.

Also, diarist Headwaters makes a nice find: Max's poll numbers surged after his recent stumping with Jon and Brian. In the last month, he went from 61% to 72% approval rating. That comes in large part from strengthened numbers among Democrats, where he went from getting support from 3 in 4 to having approval from 7 in 8.

Being a teamplayer and being seen with a couple populists seems like it was a real good move for the senior Senator. Here's hoping he takes note.

Jeez (1.00 / 1)
Higher approval, and net approval, than Barack friggin' Obama right now. Definitely ripe for a primary challenge, if you ask me.

I gave you a "1" for that comment (0.00 / 0)
Because it is unproductive. If you care about progress, you are a fool to let Baucus off the hook for doing (surprise!) what is expected of him. If you are a Republican, then Baucus is your favorite senator.

The fact that Max doing what is expected is cause for celebration is a great example of how awful Baucus has been in the last decade.

What this poll shows is that despite three decades in Washington Baucus has volatility in his numbers. You know what they say about the short rope at the top of the tall ladder.

Thank you (0.00 / 0)
for being a purity troll. However, unlike you I won't downrate someone who disagrees with me. Try acting civilly before claiming the moral high ground.

Oh, one more thing... (0.00 / 0)
Varying between a 55% approval and a 72% is indeed evidence for some volatility, but only in the upwards direction. He has had very stable high ratings up until now, when he gets significantly popular, and sure enough you use that as evidence he's ripe for a primary challenge! My first sarcastic post stands vindicated.

Max (0.00 / 0)
Max has done a good job for us.

The last time I was at the Democratic Study Clib for breakfast they were complaining that he was a republican, but for the most part democrats support Max, and there's no way they'll do a 'Lieberman' on him and support somebody against him. No way.

Team player and sharing the limelight are different things (0.00 / 0)
As you noted, he was not a team player on the hideous tax cuts that now must be dealt with and now will make the Dems look like tax raisers if they attempt to stop the hemorraging.  He let down  the middle class with that.  He let them down again with the Bankruptcy bill.  He sold them out on Presciption drugs.  He voted for the corporate crusader Roberts.  He voted against the filibuster of Alito who is a major corporatist.  These judicial votes will bite us all in the butt. A team player is also someone who is inclusive. Someone who welcomes new ideas and constructive criticism. That I can't see in Max.  But I hope that Max sees which way the wind is blowing and comes away from center right.  I can't hope for a passionate economic populist like a John Edwards or Sherrod Brown or Bernie Sanders, but if he would just not cause any damage to the cause, I'd back off from my criticism.
